Gaiman and Avary Enter the "Black Hole"

Empress Eve   |    |

Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary will adapt Charles Burn’s “Black Hole” for the big screen with Alexandre Aja (”Hills Have Eyes”) directing. The 12-issue “Black Hole” series, which took Burns over a decade to complete, has received rave reviews since it was compiled into a graphic novel last year.

In “Black Hole,” a sexually transmitted disease called “the bug” is plaguing the local teenagers with hallucinations as well as physical deformities, stigmatizing them from the rest of society. While some of the lesser affected can hide their abnormalities, others — one with a second mouth on his neck that whispers his innermost thoughts as he sleeps; another with a tail that lightly tickles her sexual partners — must fight for survival, even among each other.

Avary, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for “Pulp Fiction,” also worked with Gaiman on the screenplay for Robert Zemeckis’s upcoming “capture performance” film “Beowulf.” “Beowulf” will star Angelina Jolie, Crispin Glover, Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Alison Lohman, John Malkovich, and Robin Wright Penn. It is scheduled for release in 2007.

Wow, it’s amazing to see such an underground comic becoming a film. I am a big comic fan and I have only heard of it sparingly, but have seen it on the wall at Village Comics. I definitely will pick up the graphic novel and I would love to see it on the big screen.

Great comic. And certainly an interesting choice for a film project.

  3. David Fincher to Direct ‘Black Hole’ Says:

[…] Beowulf co-scrbes Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman signed on to adapt the screenplay in March 2006 (see Gaiman and Avary Enter the ‘Black Hole’). […]
