Bytes: Super-Ex, Masters of Sci Fi
- Uma Thurman will play Luke Wilson’s psycho ex girlfriend, who just happens to be a superhero, in director Ivan Reitman’s (Ghostbusters) upcoming comedy MY SUPER EX GIRLFRIEND. Anna Faris (Scary Movie 4) and comedian Eddie Izzard will also star in the film, in theaters July 21.
- Spoof master David Zucker (Naked Gun) will direct SUPERHERO!, a parody of comic book movies like Batman Begins and Fantastic Four that will mock a newly created superhero who has a serious power. Scary Movie 4 co-writer Craig Mazin will pen the script for the film, which will be released in 2007 by Dimension Films.
- THE OMEN remake will be released on a Tuesday. That’s because the date bodes well for Satan — June 6, 2006 or 6/6/06!
- Warner Brothers has picked up movie rights to a story written by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. The novel, HEART-SHAPED BOX, is about a singer who buys a ghost on eBay.
- A federal judge is letting a jury decide whether the W-B’s SMALLVILLE infringes on copyrights held by the widow of Jerome Siegel, who co-created Superman. Warner Brothers says it will appeal. Siegel’s widow, Joanne Siegel, and her daughter recaptured the Superboy character’s copyright in November 2004.
- An all-star lineup of heroes will join the superheroes of the Justice League to save the world from an army of villains in the series finale of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED. The two-part conclusion, which will have one of the most unexpected match-ups in JL history, will air May 6 and May 13 on the Cartoon Network.
- ABC has greenlit 13 one-hour episodes of MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION, scifi.com reports. The upcoming series, from the creators of ShowTime’s Masters of Horror, will feature scripts adapted from works of classic SF authors like Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury as well as original stories such as the show’s first segment, “Watchbird.”
- New York Times bestselling author and veteran comic book writer Peter David has been chosen to pen the first seven issues of Marvel Comics’s adaptation of Stephen King’s DARK TOWER saga. Artist Jae Lee will illustrate the series, which will debut in February 2007.
- Titan Books will publish later this summer FIREFLY: THE OFFICIAL COMPANION, a supplement to Joss Whedon’s now-defunct TV show Firefly, a futuristic space western that spun-off the movie Serenity.
- Fantasy author Robert Jordan, known for his bestselling WHEEL OF TIME series, was diagnosed with a rare blood disease for which he’s currently undergoing treatment.
