The American-born artist Sol LeWitt died from complications of cancer in New York on April 8. He was 78.
Sol LeWitt, who avoided media attention preferring to let his work speak for itself, was considered a pioneer of the Conceptual and Minimal art movements. With a career spanning four decades, his works contained a variety of basic geometric shapes with cube-based sculptures. LeWitt’s art has been featured in hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide.
In September 2005, I was able to view two sculptures the artist created especially for a free outdoor art exhibit at the Madison Square Park Conservancy — Circle with Towers (photo above) and Curved Wall with Towers (photo at end of entry).
