Iggy Pop… Elijah Wood… Iggy, Elijah… Pop, Wood. Hmm.
According to Variety, Elijah Wood is going to play Iggy Pop in a biopic called The Passenger that will focus on the singer’s early years with The Stooges.
Iggy Pop is one of my all-time favorite people. He’s a five-foot seven-inch atomic bomb. This is a man who’s threatened crowds with 55-minute versions of “Louie, Louie,” dodged well-aimed bottles, climbed balconies and swung from lighting fixtures, and on occasion, slashed his chest open with glass from aforementioned bottles — all while rocking the crap out of everyone within a quarter-mile of his ‘blast-zone.’
I’ve been within breathing distance of Iggy over half a dozen times. From accidentally swallowing his sweat at the old Ritz, to being crushed up against the stage of the Continental for two-hours (which, for those of you who don’t know, is pretty much like being crushed up against the couch in your living room) until the fire department showed up to shut down the show, to standing next to one another, staring into the same mirror in an airport bathroom.
Apparently, Iggy has “given his blessing” to the project but will not take part in it. That says something right there, no? While I don’t know Iggy personally, I know enough about him to say that unless the biopic’s director Nick Gomez staples Wood’s nutsack, chains him to a lion, and hires a sniper to take random shots at him for the duration of the shoot, he’ll never be able to accurately portray Iggy’s raw power and intensity.
I like Elijah Wood, I really do, but I can’t imagine Pop being portrayed by a freakin’ hobbit. Iggy is the godfather of Punk for christ sake!

If Elijah’s going to step up to the plate, he’s going to need a big bat. From most of the articles I’ve read about Iggy, he’s got a big unit.

Pretty soon though, people will be calling to Iggy, “Hey Pops!”
I think this is a very bad choice, my choice would be Anthony Kiedis from the Chili Peppers. He is an actor and musician, plus he knows about Iggy and they do look a little a like.

I love Elijah wood too but I must say I’ll be surprised if he can pull this off. I woulda picked Rhys Ifans. He’s a better match physically and he’s a bit mental.
