30 Most Memorable ‘Star Wars’ Quotes

The Geeks of Doom   |    |

Star WarsThank the maker!

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the original ‘Star Wars’ — back when the biggest explosion came from the last TIE fighter and Han actually shot first — we present to you 30 of the film’s most memorable quotations … and no questions asked. (Let’s just say we’d like to avoid any imperial entanglements.)

  1. “This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Kenobi, and will soon see the end of the rebellion.”
  2. “What a piece of junk!”
  3. “Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease.”
  4. “I’m Luke Skywalker, I’m here to rescue you.”
  5. “Watch your mouth kid, or you’ll find yourself floating home.”
  6. “Evacuate in our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances.”

Star Wars

  1. “If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador? — Commander, tear this ship apart until you’ve found those plans. And bring me the passengers, I want them alive!”
  2. “Look, good against remotes is one thing, good against the living, that’s something else.”
  3. “Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?”
  4. “What are we going to do? We’ll be sent to the spice mines of Kessel and smashed into who knows what.”
  5. “That’s no moon, it’s a space station.”
  6. “This is some rescue. You came in here and you didn’t have a plan for getting out?”

    “He’s the brains, sweetheart!”

Star Wars

  1. “You just watch yourself. We’re wanted men. I have the death sentence on 12 systems.”

    “I’ll be careful.”

    “You’ll be dead!”

  2. “Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”
  3. “Into the garbage chute, flyboy!”
  4. “This is Red 5, I’m going in.”
  5. “Boring conversation anyway. Luke, we’re gonna have company!”
  6. “The Force is strong with this one.”

Star Wars

  1. “I suggest a new strategy, R2. Let the wookiee win.”
  2. “I’m a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan.”

“You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor. Take her away!”

  3. “You’re all clear, kid! Now let’s blow this thing and go home!”
  4. “These blast points — too accurate for sandpeople. Only imperial stormtroopers are so precise.”
  5. “I’ve got a very bad feeling about this.”
  6. “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.”

Star Wars

  1. “When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master.”

“Only a master of evil, Darth.”

  2. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
  3. “Use the Force, Luke.”
  4. “You don’t need to see his identification … These aren’t the droids you’re looking for … He can go about his business … Move along.”

  7. Star WarsHonorable Mention: The final word of the movie “Argh!” from Chewbacca!

  1. Eric Says:

What about: Negitive, negitive, it didn’t go in. Just a peckin on the surfice.

  2. Kenzan Says:

    These are classics!
Though wasn’t it:”“Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight GLOB of grease?”

    I seem to remember Glob..not blob…
    could be wrong though..

[ED. NOTE: Had it as glob.. don't know what happened, so let's blame spellcheck. Thanks for the heads-up]

  3. Cheeseburger Brown Says:

I’m with you Kenzan: the line is “glob” not “blob.”

  4. rastatech Says:

Eric: It’s “…just IMPACTED on the surface.” What you said is not only wrong it makes no sense. watch the movie a few more times.
Also, you guys neglected my FAVORITE quote:
Han: “I don’t have time to discuss this with your comittee!”
Leia: “I am NOT a committee!”

  5. kiwiT Says:

Um where is the most essential quote - “Luke I am your father..”???????!!!!!!!!!!1

  6. widget_13 Says:

“I don’t know where you get your delusions, laser brain.”

  7. Sleff Says:

    Eric, I think its:
“Negitive, negitive, it didn’t go in. Just impacted on the surface.”

  8. elliott Says:

    no “I AM your father”?????

and more importantly, no “Look, sir. Droids.”???

this list is incomplete to say the least.

  9. Ian Says:

    Ummmm… You missed:

    “Look sir, droids”

Seriously, there’s a lot of fun made about that comment (cuz it was so stupid).

  10. Dave3 Says:

    @kiwiT & elliott
I’m your father… great quote, but it’s from a different film.

And, just so you know, I voted for ‘Look sir, Droids.”

  11. elliott Says:

oh yeah and “i love you.” “i know.”

    and “who’s scruffy-looking?”

and “i think the cave is collapsing…”

  12. 3D-J Says:

    O-man, my favorite is:

    Princess: “Han, I love you.”

    Han: “I know.”

  13. Empress Eve Says:

Although Empire is the greatest movie ever, this piece contains quotes from the 1977 original Star Wars ONLY.

  14. elliott Says:

oops, just realised it was only a new hope stuff.

“look sir droids” still stands though.

  15. King Mad Says:

How about the non English quotes?

    1. Too ta too ta Solo??

    2. So peita lay enauf manichita, Jabba wan encheekopa aousani asanyee nanyaroska!!

  18. RamDammer Says:

    Laugh it up, fuzzball!

  19. DMan Says:

“What a wonderful smell you’ve discovered”

  20. Yoda Says:

“Do or do not, there is no try”

[ED. NOTE: Surely Yoda is smart enough to know he said that in Empire.]

  21. TC Says:

    “Stay on Target”

  22. The Jesus Says:

RamDam, Laughing fuzzball is from Empire

  27. J Kunkel Says:

How could “Great kid, don’t get cocky!” be left off?!

  28. Nick Says:

    what about

“I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

  29. Roybert Says:

Yeah, they are missing the most essential “Luke I am your father”. They also forgot a couple of my other golden moments, “governor Tarkin, I should have expected you to be holding Vaders leash” another goody is “Cut the chatter red 2!” and last but most defiantly not least “I can hold it!!! NOO!!” by Jek Porkins

  30. Ricky Says:

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
    This is my number 1.

  31. Pumi Says:

    Greedo says:

Jabba wah ninchi koekpha mushani kai tange wanaruska…heh heh heh…..

    Whatever that all means.

  32. sarah Says:

WTF?????? where is the Luke, I am you father quote? It should be #1

[ED. NOTE: Once again. 'Luke, I'm your father.' was from Empire, not the original Star Wars.]

  33. Mister Fun Says:

what? wait. I thought the best line was the “walking carpet” one.
yeah, I can’t remember the whole line. But at least I know it was in this movie!

  34. Shawn Says:

“Can someone get this walking carpet out of my way!!!”

  35. Luke Says:

My name is Luke, so I’ve heard “Luke, I am your Father” countless times in my life…. I’m wondering why it wasn’t on the list?

[ED. NOTE: Wonder no longer. It wasn't said in this movie.]

  36. Dr Mic Says:

#7 “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.” This is TERRIBLE, a parsec is a unit of distance not time ARRGGGGHHHH. Damn Hollywood scriptwriters proud of their techno-babble, too lazy to do any reality checks.

  37. Wanderer Says:

i think the line that cracked me up the most was the

    “I dont like you!!”

  38. Chad Says:

    How about:
“Who is the more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows him?”

  39. WampaOne Says:

Tarkin lines are golden. I love the evacuate one, but bickering is pointless and charming to the last are also golden. My favorites:

“The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe”
    and

“The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.”

When I like to point out that I found something I sometimes use 3PO´s over heere (to Jawa Sandcrawler) line.

    MTFBWY

  40. Mo3pheus Says:

    #20 should be way higher.

  41. Mo3pheus Says:

Also, what about the Flacon making the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs? How can a race be measured in distance?

It’s just more of the inane revisionism from your Superman haircut hero, George Lucas.

    What a hack!

  42. ross Says:

“Look at the size of that thing.”

“It’s not impossible, I used to bullseye womprats in my T16 back home, they’re not much bigger than 2 meters.”

    And the best ever…
(in a whiney voice) “..but I was going to go to Tashi Station and pick up some power converters.”

  43. Ivan Minic Says:

    Nothing like yoda :)

  44. Shawn Says:

I know it was commented before but I think it deserves to be said again,

what rejects forget “Luke, I am your father”. That’s the number one quote!

[ED. NOTE: Another in the long line of people who can't tell the difference between Star Wars and Empire.]

  45. jeff Says:

I agree with Mo3pheus, #20 should be higher.

  46. Bryan St. Amour Says:

    Dr Mic,

Actually parsecs can be used to measure distance or time. I read that somewhere, wish I had a source to back it up with.

“But I was gonna go to Anchorhead and pick up some power convertors!!”

  47. Bryan St. Amour Says:

Nevermind, wikipedia owned me: Parsecs are indeed units of measurement. My mistake.

  48. Bryan St. Amour Says:

Actually it does make sense, because the kessel run is done by flying past the Maw Cluster of black holes, so making it in less than 12 parsecs means that Han travelled less than 12 parsecs away from the Maw Cluster in order to shorten his time.

  49. Giolon Says:

You missed the part of the one:

“Everything’s fine here…We’re all fine here now, thank you…how are you?”

  50. dw Says:

    What??? No Jar-Jar…

  51. Spank Says:

But I was going into Tashi station to pick up some power converters!

  53. Happy Phantom Says:

    and “I have you now!”

plus “you may fire when ready”

  54. RamDammer Says:

In the official stories written AFTER Return of the Jedi, one of the books told the story of Han and Chewie making the Kessel Run. Kessel was a planet where Spice was mined. The only way to get to Kessel was to traverse a maze of black holes, or to just go around it, which would have taken waay longer than going thru the black hole maze. So, making the “Kessel Run” in less than 12 parsecs is accurate, as Han brillaintly navigated it in record time and shortest distance. If you were a true fanboy, you would have read the books that fill in the stories before, between and after the movies. By the way, Spice is the crystals that come from the web of a spider-like giant creature and deliveres temporary empathic abilities to the user.

  65. Szylax Says:

I, too, noticed the thing about parsecs. Stupid Hollywood. I guess they just used it because of “secs” being like “seconds.” Most people watching wouldn’t even know the difference…sadly.

It’s like the sorry attempt at parody in the World of Warcraft episode of South Park…sad, really.

May the force be with you.

  66. Rob Says:

Well this is a hornet’s nest of opinion if ever I saw one!

My vote for best quote not on the list:

“We’re going in, we’re going in full throttle.”

Not only is it badass but it inspired a whole Prodigy track (although the sample was reversed in the album release)

That said, nice list. If more people blogged about Star Wars the world would be a better place.

  78. willis Says:

as per the under 12 parsecs comments…
it’s not a race you idiots, the kessel run is an illegal smuggling run, carrying spice, (an intoxicant that is illegal most places in the galaxy), from the mines on kessel, out of the system to free space. the imperials guard it well, and there is this little thing called the Kessel Maul…

doing the RUN, (not race you morons) in under 12 parsecs means superior navigation, as well as an outstanding ship, because it’s setup allowed you to cut corners, get closer to stars, and other gravity wells, without dropping you out of hyperspace, which technically has no distance….

so i guess the point here is who is the bigger moron, the one who makes a fantastic script, filled with a wonderful story, or the moron who tries to bash at it with their so called intelligence, without so much as a basic understanding of the context of the content.

  79. willis Says:

oh, and the walking carpet bit is from empire…
    while they were on Hoth.

[ED. NOTE: "walking carpet" is from original SW, not Empire. That was one of the quotes considered for this list.]

  89. Bongjuan Says:

Biggs: “Luke, at that speed can you pull out in time?”

How can you leave that off the list? ;)

  90. geewits Says:

I liked most of those except, “Boring story anyway…” That always made my skin crawl. Han’s sexiest line was something like “Yeah, I bet you did!” right before he shoots Grido. Luke’s funniest whiny line was “Uncle Owen, this R2 unit has a bad motivator!” That one makes me laugh every time.

  91. Named My Daughter After Leia Says:

Saying that the “Luke I am your father” line was missing from the list is as intelligent as saying that the line “Live Long And Prosper” was left off the list too. Why? BECAUSE NEITHER LINE WAS IN THE ORIGINAL MOVIE STAR WARS!!!

  92. Brooke Says:

    Keep On Target

  93. Joe Says:

“Who is more foolish, the fool or the fool that follows him?” -Alec Guinness (Obi Wan Kenobi, this one is my personal favorite)

“Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid” -Harrison Ford (Han Solo)

  94. Mr T. pities you Says:

One the best not on there….”You can’t win Darth. If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

  95. Clayton Says:

  96. Rebecca Says:

  98. dude Says:

    how about:

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”

    that should be on there.

  99. Kerrie Says:

I would like to point out to all the people who are saying that “I your father” is in Empire: When I first came upon this, I ignored the intro and went straight to the quote list,so I didn’t see that instead of calling A New Hope by it’s name (or even Episode IV), it is here simply referred to as Star Wars. I believe this is what creates the confusion.

  100. scbyrd Says:

My favorite: “Flying through hyperspace ain’t like dusin’ crops, kid”

  101. scbyrd Says:

    Correction: dustin’ crops

  102. Ben Says:

I’m not sure what bugs me more - the fact that people keep asking why the line “No, I am your father,” wasn’t in the movie, or that they keep erroneously saying that the quote was, “Luke, I am your father.” Come on people, if you’re truly Star Wars fans, I wouldn’t even have to explain this.

One of my favorite lines from A New Hope was “Listen to them, they’re dying,” which C-3P0 says when he thinks he failed to stop the trash compactor in time.

  109. jawa Says:

Sheesh… will one of the page editors please clarify AT THE TOP of the page that this is for A New Hope only– for the idiots who keep posting the “where’s ‘i am your father?’” comments?

    That being said… great list!

[ED. NOTE: We had hoped that stating "In honor of the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the original ‘Star Wars’" would be enough considering that by using that statement there can be NO other movie we are talking about besides the very first "Star Wars" movie George Lucas made in 1977 30 years ago, also known as Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. And the fact that NOT ONE quote from the list is from any other movies from the saga should help readers deduce which movie we are speaking of, though, I guess not. But, I understand your frustration, though, it's kind of amusing. How many "I am your father" comments can we get, lol.

But, thank you for enjoying the list. We appreciate it. ]

Wheres “No, I am your father”?

LMAO just kidding! Half the people reading this arnt too bright…most of us worked out that ALL of the quotes are from the first one! Nice list, I would have ordered them slightly differently myself but most of them were there. It must be pretty hard to to pick 30 quotes, most of the lines in this film are VERY memorable! But I think we all knew that “May the force be with you” would be number one! Good list though, well done!

  121. swf Says:

If your going to make a list for only things said only in A New Hope then you should name it that instead of Star Wars since there are of course 6 Star Wars movies.

  122. Misato Says:

I didn’t see this quote, but this is one of my favorite ones. It is from Darth Vader in the Return Of The Jedi when Darth Vader arrives at the partially completed Death Star at the beginning of the show, and he says to one of the imperial officers when the officer learns that the empororer is arriving. He tells the officer when the officers tells Darth Vader that he and his men will double the efforts on the construction of the Death Star…

“I hope so commander, for your sake. The emperor is not as forgiving as I am”. =D

  123. Torretto Says:

Mo3pheus, Darth Vader DID build C3PO, if you remember from episode one, C3PO was built by the then 9-year old Anakin Skywalker, and Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker. Also regarding the quote about the kessel run in 12 parsecs, i am glad that it has been mostly cleared up, but to elaborate, if you have watched A New Hope dvd with commentary, George Lucas clearly states that he knows parsecs are a measure of distance not time, and he knew it back in 1977 too. He states that that quote does make sense because the Millenium Falcon is not physically the fastest ship in the universe, but it is the fastest because it has the most advanced navigation computer to allow it to take the shortest possible distance around objects in hyperspace, therefore the quote is accurate. Also, a note to the editor regarding your note on adam`s post, Empire came out 3 years after A New Hope, not 2 years.

  124. Paul Says:

In regards to the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs… I think it should be noted that it is correct. Han flew the Kessel run through an asteroid field that was considered impassable, which significantly shortened the overall length of the flight. Hence the reason to boas

  125. forthardknox.com Says:

[...] a long time now I have been a movie fan. I can recite Star Wars lines as if I wrote them myself. I have spent a small fortune building myself a home theater. But while I [...]

  126. dpritchard Says:

“You’re all clear kid, now lets blow this thing and go home.”

“I’m going in, going in full throttle”

    To please the idiots:
    “I am your father”

And I believe the the “Kessel Run” involves passing by several black holes. Straight lines are faster than curved ones. This means: if you can take a line “less than 12 parsecs” away from a black hole then you are taking a straight (fast) line and may have something to be proud of.

  127. TROY E SMITH Says:

THE BEST LINE OF THAT MOVIE IS DON’T BE TO COWARDLESS OF THIS TECHNOLOGICAL TERROR YOU’VE CONSTRUCTED .THE POWER TO DESTROY A PLANET IS INSIGNIFICANT NEXT TO THE POWER OF THE FORCE

  128. Popcorn Joe Says:

What about “Luke, I am your father!”

[ED. NOTE: Another poor soul who failed reading comprehension.]

  129. Caera Says:

This was a great list, thanks for taking the time to put it together. The quote I always think of with that movie was Wedge Antilles saying …

    “Almost there! Almost there!”

  130. AMG Says:

Great list, really tough to pick out only 30 quotes; but i have gone with more Tarkin lines, my fav of which is:
“The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe”

On the Kessel run debate, regardless of whether Lucas knew about the Black holes or not, a parsec (normally unit of distance) can be used as a measure of time in Relativity - time and distance become interchangeable (in theory you can measure your age in meters, say). So its fully conceivable that the Han was measuring time in parsecs…. (not that I’m saying that’s what Lucas meant by the line, just that it is possible…)

  131. stark Says:

Darth Vader: “No. *I* am your father.” is the quote anyway… he never says luke. just thought i would point that out. and i like the walking carpet one the best :)

  132. citizen geek Says:

  133. Blindmouse2 Says:

    wat about

    Luke:
    “I don’t believe It!”
    Yoda:
    “that is why you fail,”

[ED NOTE: What about, that's from a different movie?]

  134. mdross24 Says:

“Governor Tarkin, I thought I noticed your foul stench when they brought me on board.”

  135. Meatsack1031 Says:

Excellent compilation! It brought a lot of joy and great memories back to the front of my brain! Note to the Editor– after a bit, I, too, enjoyed counting the misquotes of that famous line from Empire!

    Well done!

  136. m4 Says:

For me: 1# “The Jedi turned against me! Don’t you turn against me!” - Ani
2# “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.” - Han

  137. Max Phallus Says:

I can’t believe y’all missed the best line ever: “Ludicrous speed, NOW!” I know THAT isn’t from Return of the Jedi.

  138. Willy Boy Says:

What about “Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view”?

  139. Jay Says:

Where’s “Do or do not. There is no try.”?

  140. elessar007 Says:

One of the things I often find disappointing with quote lists is that the quotes are often boring outside of the context of the movie. Too often the memorable part is not the quote but the scene in its entirety. Quotes like “that’s no moon…” have no flair in their use of language. It just serves as a bookmark for a very memorable scene. Granted these are just my opinions, so there’s no need for people to get upset(but they probably will anyway).

When Alec Guinness says “Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy,” to describe how vile the place is, well, that is a great use of language. Its not just an auditory marker used to identify a great scene. Thats my two cents.

Anyway, thanks for posting this commemorative list of episode IV.

  141. Diana Says:

My daughter is having a Star Wars birthday party tomorrow, and I’m looking for quotes such as these for a “who said it” game. These are great… but not all of them say who said it.. can you help me… really, really soon?

  142. Simon Says:

I don’t think this quote is accurate: “Boring conversation anyway. Luke, we’re gonna have company!”. Wasn’t it something like “I never liked conversation anyway…”?

  143. chicken sniper Says:

    what happened to

don’t trust your eyes, they can deceive you

I’m not sure how it went exactly

  144. Ben Mcculloch Says:

Anik: Sorry master, I forgot you dont like flying.
Ob1: I dont mind flying, But what your doing is suicide.

    ( BEST QUOT EVER )

  145. Big Boy Says:

The line that has fondly followed my slightly overweight life from school to mates about to chat up a lucky girl……

” I’m going in, cover me Porkins” !!!

  146. amroberts Says:

    we seem to have missed,

“With the blast shield down I cant even see, how am I suppose to fight?”

“I find your lack of faith in the force disturbing”

  147. Cesca Palmer Says:

I love how the editors of this website started politely telling people about the “luke I am your father” quote, then just got totally arsey by the end. Kudos Editors.

My favourite quote would have to be…

“you came in that thing? you’re braver than I thought”

The whole parsec time vs distance debate was on Family Guy’s Blue Harvest. It made me smile.

By the way, has anyone seen that one episode of Scrub’s where JD’s girlfriend’s godfather is Billy Dee, a.k.a Lando Calrissian.

Billy Dee: Yeah, Julie’s a great girl
Turk: _stunned silence_ AHHHHH (screams) LANDO CALRISSIAN!!! _hugs Billy Dee_
Billy Dee: you can call me Billy Dee.
    Turk: Yes Lando Yes.

its better when there not shhoting back/some droid said that i think

  149. clone #788000 Says:

oops i think that was the animated version of starwars the clone wars

  150. CHRISTIAN Says:

Great list, and I loved all the debates that arose on the comment board. But my fav quote from this movie was missing, and no one seems to have mentioned it in the comments either:

“I think it’s time we demonstrate the full power of this Station” - Tarkin (if I remember correctly)

Or when Obi’s using his mind tricks on the storm trooper officer at Mos Eisley:

“You don’t need to see our identification.
These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.
Let us go about our business.
Move along.” and the storm trooper repeats every line, totally owned ;)

  151. The force Says:

Okay you people are starting to seriously piss me off. I read about half of the comments before I got sick of seeing “I am your father!!” First of all half of you got the quote wrong, it’s “No Luke I am your father.” and second of all, as the editor has said countless times THIS PAGE ONLY HAS QUOTES FROM SAR WARS EPISODE IV “A NEW HOPE” NOT FROM EPISODES I, II, III, V, or VI!!!!!! God you people are so ignorant!!!!!!!
