Remembering When the Groovie Goolies Rocked Our Saturday ‘Mournings’

Smed   |    |

Groovie GooliesAh, yes, everyone remembers the Groovie Goolies. In fact, just say that name and the theme song is stuck in my head.

Their show was a spinoff first entitled Sabrina And The Groovie Goolies as Sabrina, The Teenage Witch was a popular character on the Archie cartoon and comic book series. (And ironicly, since Archie’s publishers allowed the characters to be used in an ultra-conservative Christian comic book series, but I digress).

Of course, since it was an Archie-based cartoon, they had to have some music. And lo and behold, they did. They even released an album and a single credited to the Groovie Goolies on RCA Records. The album didn’t do so hot.

The series was a popular one, so they kept at it. In 1971, they had a song on the show by “guest band” The Rolling Headstones called “Chick-A-Boom (Don’t Ya Jes’ Love It).” Dick Monda, one of the songwriters on the show, recorded it on his own as Daddy Dewdrop. It was released on Sunflower Records, an MGM subsidiary, and hit #9 on the charts.

I remember that song as a kid. It was insanely catchy and fun, and it was a little risque with a chick taking off her bikini and Daddy Dewdrop finding both parts of it while opening some doors. Trust me, it was clever, especially for someone who was a little kid.

So many people my age and younger (since they repeated these shows constantly in the ’70s) remember seeing that cartoon and hearing that song on it. However, not many people realize that it was Daddy Dewdrop and not the Groovie Goolies or even the Rolling Headstones, that cashed in on it. Well, somewhat. The flipside of the single was “John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith” and the follow-up single was “The March Of The White Corpuscles.”

Now, you can buy the DVDs for the Groovie Goolies in a three-disc set entitled Saturday Mourning Collection (yes, groan with the bad puns. That show was all about the puns).

But here’s to you, Daddy Dewdrop, for sneaking a hit record out of a silly song on a kids’ TV show.
