‘The Dark is Rising’ Poster

Empress Eve   |    |

MTV Movie Blog revealed the first poster for The Dark Is Rising, the upcoming fantasy adventure film based on the novel by Susan Cooper.

The Dark Is Rising is actually the second of five books in the The Dark Is Rising Sequence series and revolves around a young man named Will Stanton who discovers that he is the last of a group of immortals dedicated to fighting dark forces of evil. Traveling back and forth through time, Will uncovers a series of clues that will help him save the world.

Directed by David Cunningham, the Fox-Walden film stars Ian McShane, Alexander Ludwig, Frances Conroy, Gregory Smith, and Christopher Eccleston. Filming began earlier this year in Romania; click here to read details of a visit to the set.

The Dark Is Rising is scheduled to hit theaters October 5, 2007.

By the way, if you’re anything like me, you probably want to check out the book. As it turns out, all five books that were put out by Simon Pulse publishers are currently eligible as part of Amazon.com’s 4-for-3 promotion — pick 4 eligible books and get the lowest priced book for free. I’m guessing these versions are on sale now to make way for ones with movie tie-in covers.

Use the search box here below at right and type in “The Dark Is Rising Sequence” and look for the books published May 8, 2007. When you click on one of the titles, be sure to check under “Product Promotions” to confirm that you have selected the version that is offered in the promotion. You can also search by specific title (see list of books below) or by author.

According to all that I have read, everyone involved with this production had utter disdain for the source material and subsequently warped the plot all out of recognition. The trailers seem to depict a generic kid fantasy; a derivative plot with derivative characters and cliched teen-age angst — Will now being 13 or so and girl-focused.
