Currently the battling champions for the Wimbledon Final are Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. [No doubt Federer wins.*]
Of one of the most typically British sports, which modestly had its roots begin in Middle to Upper class ‘Posh’ England all those years ago, we come to today, a final being played by two typically non-British.
Our hopefuls? Tin Henman, yeah…Britain is really behind him. Andrew Murray? Injured. Nothing unusual there. And then Greg Rusedski. Canadian.
You can kind of imagine what I go through when the television schedule is rampantly taken over by Wimbledon, then most of the quarter/semi/final finals are RAINED off, because Britain is experiencing the type of British summer — the best in years — where we’ve had hail stones, thunderstorms, consistent rain….filling the schedule with even more inane commentary and memories…
Am I bitter?
No.
I just wish we had better sports to be proud of. Ones we were good at.
[*UPDATE: Yup]
I know how you feel.
I live in Wichita and we have had three unsuccessful hockey franchises (and the current franchise teeters on the edge of bankruptcy each year), the Wichita Wrangler’s baseball team is moving and there is an arena football team as well that few know about and even fewer support.
The closest pro-teams are the Kansas City Royals baseball team or the KC Chief’s football team — and BOTH freeze each year during the playoffs as if somehow having a SUCCESSFUL season is just beyond their comprehension.
I wish WE had better sports TEAMS to be proud of … teams that could actually PLAY the sports they are PAID TO PLAY…
