[...] The Simpsons (July 27) — After reading the official synopsis and watching one trailer and three teasers, I still have no clue what the plot is. “Homer must save the world from a catastrophe he created himself.” The rest is unknown, save the certainty of unnecessary and hilarious slapstick violence that’s typical of The Simpsons.
I have yet to see the movie, but am looking forward to it. As long as it makes me laugh, which I'm sure it will then I'm happy.

The simpsons are awesome, this review is not.

One second he is saying "I will not judge this by movie standards, but by simpson standards" then he says "I must judge this by movie standards". Then "If I must go into the plot, I will" then "But I wont go into the plot". MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Work on your writing skills a little kiddo. Other than that, thanks for the info.

"All that matters are the characters and exquisitely honed latticework of jokes, gags, and cultural references."

When plot is left as a mere play device, and an after thought, just to deliver gags, things tend to get ugly. Case in point: "Family Guy", and the past 7 seasons of the Simpsons. Best animated show on TV right now is South Park. You cant match the cutting current events satire delivered week after week. Sure its hit and miss. But much better than anything on TV today, as far as animated comedies go.

We scrambled a group together to grab tix, go to dinner, and catch the 9pm on Friday night... Got in line by 8:15... And we were at the front. Theater never filled, despite being in the center of the city.

I think people who saw it opening night, surrounded by fanboys, had more of an "experience" than people who saw it in a half-full theater of regular folks.

Don't get me wrong, people were cheering and hooting through the opening credits and first few jokes... But slowly, it just sort of dawned on everyone that we were watching The Simpsons in a movie theater, and NOT a "Simpsons Movie".

It's not a bad extended episode, but it's really really hard to call this a movie, with the possible exception of "oh, there may be 1-2 things they can't ever show on TV". The production quality is NO BETTER than the TV show when they do a "big" ep (season premieres back in the day, etc). Nothing really "filmy" about it, and definitely not a cavalcade of all the stuff that was too racy/fun for the TV show.

Just, you know, like a good two or three parter, the likes of which they probably haven't put out in 8-10 years.

Net effect: made me want to give the regular show another try, but definitely left a "weird" feeling in me as I left the theater that I truly WAS suckered out of my $10. :/

As to the reviewer offering a "seemingly unthinkable" choice between this and Chuck and Larry - I'd say go see Chuck and Larry first. Disappointing comedic movies are still, you know, movies. ;)

I found the movie very flat from my perspective.

Sometimes The Simpsons is fun, sometimes it isn't.

Tickets for the movie have been sold out here, I'm just waiting till Sunday to watch it. Also this Sunday there's going to be a special feature on Fox about the movie for those interested.
