Status of Heath Ledger’s Projects

Empress Eve   |    |

The Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusActor Health Ledger’s sudden death on Tuesday leaves in question a few projects he was involved with — The Dark Knight, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and what was to be his directorial debut, The Queen’s Gambit. (See here after the jump a possible Dark Knight spoiler.)

The 28-year-old actor was found dead in his New York City apartment on Tuesday from what appears to be either a suicide or an accidental overdose, according to New York City police. Sources say the autopsy report on Wednesday was inconclusive and that further testing will take about two more weeks.

Ledger had been in NYC on break from filming Terry Gilliam’s fantasy-adventure The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which had wrapped its London shoot last Saturday. A report in Variety states that the production team had moved to Vancouver, Canada, where blue-screen work was due to start next week and continue until early March. US reports that the film has been shut down in the wake of Ledger’s death, though the article attributes only “a source” with no official word from the film’s producers; the Variety report said the film is “temporarily shut down.”

Ledger’s involvement in the film, which also stars Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, and Tom Waits, played a major role in raising the $30 million financing for the indie flick. The site Dreams has photos and info on the film.

Aside from Parnassus, Ledger had been working on an adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel The Queen’s Gambit, along with British writer/producer Allan Scott. The film would have been the actor’s directorial debut.

Ledger had completed filming his part as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight, set for theatrical release this summer. Therefore, the actor will appear in the film, though Warner Bros. will most likely have to restructure their marketing campaign, which relied heavily on Ledger’s likeness as The Joker.

***POSSIBLE DARK KNIGHT SPOILER***

SPOILER

Moviehole reports that Ledger was slotted for a spot (possibly just a cameo) in a third Batman film, stating that writer David Goyer planned to have The Joker somehow aid Batman in his search for that film’s villain, Two-Face.

END SPOILER
