Last month, director Rob Cohen announced that post-production on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor had begun. Cohen, who’s now busy editing the film, posted in his production blog yesterday that the film’s running time is 2 hours and 5 minutes and that it’s being prepped for its first screening for Universal Studios executives on February 28.
Cohen also said that the teaser trailer for this third Mummy installment — starring Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello, and Jet Li — will hit within a month and he’s looking into premiering it on his blog. The director also posted a new webisode that takes you inside the editing room.
Talking about the visual effects, Cohen said:
So far, the Yeti (the abominable snowmen) done by Rhythm & Hues, that appear in the Himalayan sequence are my favorite achievement. They are flat out cool! Supervisor Derek Spears and team have been kicking ass on the creatures.
Meanwhile, over at Digital Domain, Co-supervisors Joel Hynek and Matthew Butler have been working with me on the terracotta Jet Li and the final battle where Michelle Yeoh’s undead square off against Jet’s terracotta army. There are 400 vfx shots in the last 25 minutes of the film, the vast majority belonging to DD.
Can I just say — YETI! Any movie that has a Yeti, I AM THERE. I know there are tons of highly anticipated movies coming out this year — The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull … the list goes on — but I’m really looking forward to the third Mummy flick, too.
