The Oscars this year came with record low numbers of viewers. Personally, the Academy Awards are another Super Bowl for me; I wait impatiently for them, prepare for them, see as many of the nominees as humanly possible, and even print out a ballot and make my picks. Surely not many take them that seriously, but if you were one of the few who did watch it, you were treated to one of the true great moments in Oscar history.

The moment in question is when Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” from the small-yet-powerful indie film, Once. After they won, Hansard made his speech which lasted about 30 seconds and when he was done, Irglova went in to say her speech, but by that point the orchestra from hell, that dwells under the stage every year, was already playing them off of the stage to move on to the next superstar. A very typical Academy Award gesture — give the A-list stars as long as need, but shoo away the “nobodies” as fast as possible — which is something that has happened many times before. Only this time, something was done about it.

When the broadcast returned from commercials, host Jon Stewart brought Miss Irglova back out to say her piece. Some rumors say that Colin Farrell was backstage insisting that she get to go back out there, which may be true as it’s an Irish film and he’s representing strongly. Maybe the producers felt bad for once and instructed Stewart to do it. Maybe as the host, he just decided to do it himself. In any case, it was a great little moment to see after a well-deserved win in a category that was swarming with crappy Disney songs.

Ever since I first heard of Once in April of last year, it has steadily gained momentum through countless praises and no negativity whatsoever. This continues now with word from Variety that the duo, who have collaborated before and have toured and continue to tour, have just been signed to a music publishing deal with Warner/Chapell Music, a division of Warner Music. Hopefully this means that many, many more people will be able to hear what these two can create.
