Warner Bros. Picks Up ‘Bone’

Empress Eve   |    |

BoneWarner Bros. has acquired the rights to Bone, the popular indie comic book series by Jeff Smith, according to THR.

Released in 55 issues from 1991 to 2004, Bone follows the epic story of the Bone cousins, three humanoid creatures who are small, white, and bald with big noses. The trio, who were run out of their town Boneville by their pitchfork-wielding neighbors, find themselves separated and pursued by locusts and rat creatures. They end up in a fantastical valley, threatened by the evil Lord of the Locusts, and meet a beautiful young girl named Thorn and her mysterious grandmother, all of which leads to a grand adventure.

The series was originally self-published in single-issue black and white format, but was picked up in 2005 by Scholastic, which began to releasing the comic as single colorized volumes (nine in all). Scholastic now offers Bone: One Volume Edition, which contains the entire original black and white series, and has sold over two million Bone novels.

A planned animated adaptation of the comic book series that in development at Nickelodeon Films didn’t work out, partly because Smith was displeased with how the studio was handling it. For the Warner Bros. movie, Smith will executive produce with Dan Lin producing. The filmmakers have yet to decided whether their Bone movie will be live-action or animated or both.
