In their first quarter earnings report revealed today at Yahoo!, Marvel Entertainment announced release dates for four upcoming projects: an Iron Man sequel, two Avengers movies, and the already in development Thor.
Looking forward for the next three years, Marvel has locked in release dates for Iron Man 2 at on April 30, 2010; Thor on June 4, 2010; The First Avenger: Captain America (working title) on May 6, 2011; and The Avengers in July 2011. Also listed in the report as currently in development is Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, though no release date has been set.
The announcement comes on the heels of Marvel’s successful opening of Iron Man, which took in an estimated $100.75 million in domestic box office receipts this weekend.
Iron Man director Jon Favreau has said that he would direct the sequel. He also said that he two more movies in mind, which could be a reference to the Avengers movie, which he’s expressed interest in helming. As previously reported, Matthew Vaughn will direct Thor, with a script by Mark Protosevich based on the “Tales of Asgard” features from the comic books. No official word on the two Avengers movies, but as of last June, David Self was reportedly working on a Captain America script, while Zak Penn was working on one for The Avengers.
Also listed among Marvel’s many upcoming properties was a listing of Marvel’s animated direct-to-DVD projects:
– Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow scheduled for late-2008 release
– Hulk Vs. scheduled for Early-2009 release.
– Thor: Son of Asgard scheduled for late-2009 release
– Planet Hulk scheduled for early 2010 release
Iron Man really set the stage for these. It is good to see a studio actually plan their sequels before they start teasing them in films.
I saw Iron Man on Saturday, it was perfection. As a comic book fan I’m really excited about these new films being announced for the big screen and DVD. As a Marvel shareholder, I’m delighted and will be looking to buy more shares.
