Box Office Buzz: ‘Wall-E’ Wins Over ‘Wanted’

MajorJJH   |    |

Wall-EWell, I was afraid it would happen, and it did. The computer-animated adventure-comedy-science fiction-romance film Wall-E managed to come away with the box office title for the weekend of June 27-29. They were going up against the other newly released film Wanted, which came in at second.

None of the critics were able to pick which film would come away with the title this weekend. I was happy it was a Pixar movie versus a dark comic book movie. That Wanted was a comic book film can’t have hurt it, because nobody really knew. The movie was loosely based upon the Top Cow miniseries of the same name, but Universal refused to distribute it as such.

“The year is 2700. WALL*E, a robot, spends every day doing what he was made for. But soon, he will discover what he was meant for.” That was what brought everybody to the cinemas to see Wall-E, which managed to rake in an estimated $62.5 million.

On the other hand, Wanted didn’t do badly either, raking in just over $51 million for its opening weekend. With a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Wanted definitely has a chance to do well next week, but there’s another superhero movie heading to theaters next week, Hancock, starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron, so I can’t see it keeping its top 2 spot.

On the other hand, Wall-E has racked up a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment, which is pretty much just phenomenal. I believe that this is the movie that will give Hancock a run for its money next week.

Wanted and Hancock are the two comic book/superhero movies that are definitely adding to this year’s Geek credentials, even though they aren’t necessarily being billed as big comic book movies. But it once again adds credence to the growing popularity of comic publishers that aren’t the big two (DC and Marvel), such as Image.

As always, thanks to Box Office Mojo for the statistics.
