Our friends over at /Film have posted the teaser trailer for the Twentieth Century Fox remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, which stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, John Cleese, and Kathy Bates.
Watch teaser trailer here below.
The teaser trailer debuted in theaters this weekend in front of showings of the Will Smith superhero movie Hancock. In the remake, directed by Scott Derrickson, Smith’s son Jaden Smith stars as Jacob, the stepson of Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly).
In this reimagining of the 1951 cult classic science fiction film, Reeves stars as the humanoid alien Klaatu, who comes to Earth along with his protective robot Gort. While the Cold War-era original had the alien come to warn the humans to end their warmongers or face annihilation, Klaatu’s message in the remake has more of an environmental theme.
In an interview with MTV, Reeves explained his version of the film.
“The version I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.”
Reeves also confirmed that his Klaatu will utter the famous line from the original — “Klaatu barada nikto” — and that while Gort will appear, he’ll be a different version from 1951 robot, courtesy of special effects from Weta Digital. Don’t miss Gort at the very end of the teaser trailer!
The Day The Earth Stood Still hits theaters December 12, 2008.

I really didn’t know what to make of the trailer.
I love the original. I am curious to see how this one turns out.
No sir, I don’t like it.
Why didn’t these ‘writers’ just have stayed on strike? I haven’t seen ANYTHING original out in years. They don’t deserve the respect or the pay they were asking for. Anyone can copy a movie, book or drawing - are they so damn hollyweird drug numb?!
[...] Very early on in development, there were reports that the iconic Gort would not appear in the film, but in earlier this year, Reeves confirmed the robot’s appearance, stating that Gort would “be a different version from 1951 robot.” Gort can be seen, very quickly, in the very last frame of the teaser trailer (see ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ Teaser Trailer).
