If you followed our recent coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2008, you read about the complete surprise they pulled by showing footage from the upcoming Disney sequel, Tr2n (Tron 2, that is — that whole Se7en thing doesn’t work too well if you ask me). You can watch the footage here below in crappy cam format.
It all started when Joseph Kosinski — director of commercials for XBox, Nike and Saab — decided to team up with Digital Domain and put together a little clip of the light cycles from Tron with a modern look. The goal: show Disney execs that this could appeal to the gaming community. Apparently this worked, as Kosinski is now attached to direct the film.
The big name behind this project happens to be John Lasseter (Toy Story 1&2, Cars), who will basically just over-look this project and guide it along. The story there is that Lasseter was working as an animator on Mickey’s Christmas Carol when he first saw footage of Tron and that was when he realized this was the future. He loved the visual elements of the original film, but not the storyline so much; which is why he was lead to remove the original movie’s writer/director Steve Lisberger from the script he had been working on for years and replacing him with two of the brains behind Lost, Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. No worries, though, Lisberger will be given a co-producer credit for his efforts.
If you’ve not yet seen the footage, check it out below. It’s terrible quality, but apparently at Comic Con it was called “…the last footage you’ll see for at least a year,” so don’t expect to see this in QuickTime anytime soon.
