Joss said he wants to, which means he's committed but Universal (who owns rights to a sequel) has not mentioned anything about continuing the story. Since they own the rights and would most likely be the ones to finance it, it is impossible at this moment. It's not that Joss isn't committed, no one at the studio is asking for it, thus, no movie. Get it? Maybe in the future but not now. Some people are idiots. Given how Fox execs fell over themselves to put his Dollhouse series on the air, it's clear that probably several studios would gladly reprise Firefly if only Joss would give the nod and commit to do it. Some day, someone is going to wake up and say "Ooh, this thingy is popular! And it's got space in it!" and they'll finance more, whether it's movies, straight-to-dvd (which I'm totally for) or TV. It's just waiting for that to happen. That's my opinion anyway. If you ask me, it just doesn’t matter what anyone says anymore.

Some day, someone is going to wake up and say “Ooh, this thingy is popular! And it’s got space in it!” and they’ll finance more, whether it’s movies, straight-to-dvd (which I’m totally for) or TV.

It’s just waiting for that to happen.
