Could A ‘Blade Runner 2′ Really Be On The Way?

The Movie God   |    |

Blade RunnerSlashFilm caught word recently via a Q&A session involving Eagle Eye co-writer Travis Wright that he is working on a script for the sequel to one of those “untouchable” films, Blade Runner.

Apparently this is simply just writing and no studios are involved or actually making this movie at the moment. However, Wright says he’s working on more than just the script; he’s working with a team on some visuals to pitch to studios and on top of that, he has connections to Ridley Scott’s brother, Tony Scott.

So, could this really happen? Would anyone dare take such a precious film and pile needless shit upon it? Of course they would, this is Hollywood people. Not ONE movie being made, remade, adapted, revisioned, reimagined, or sequelized/prequelized would ever surprise me anymore, so don’t be shocked if this catches some suit’s eye and the project gets the light.

Wright’s long-time writing partner John Glenn had been rumored to be working on the project as well, but he e-mailed Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm personally and shot his involvement down, summing up what’s going on pretty cleanly. Here’s the entire e-mail:

John Glenn, here. I just read your article about myself and Travis Wright working on a remake of Blade Runner … Travis and I actually broke off as writing partners years ago - after the first draft of Eagle Eye. Due to previous commitments, I couldn’t make the screening / Q&A last week — so to be honest, I have no idea what Travis was talking about or why he brought up a project we were tooling with years ago, when we still wrote together. There was a point where Travis and I were working with Bud Yorkin on a sequel to Blade Runner, but that was years back. It never got too far off the ground because the movie is so perfect, so the more we thought about it, the more uneasy we became with the idea. Anyway, just an note to clear the air. My apologies to you and your readers for the confusion Travis created.

This honestly doesn’t really mean anything if you ask me. It really sounds like yeah, maybe this will happen some day; but it’s not happening now and may just never happen. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope this remains sacred ground.

The more you put this out there the bigger the risk of it happening.
