When Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi were confirmed to be returning for Spider-Man 4, we could only assume that Kirsten Dunst and any other needed cast would happily return.

While promoting How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Dunst was asked by MTV whether she was doing the film or not, for which she replied “I’m in” — though when pressed for more info she went on the defensive saying that she’s heard rumors but was waiting and other such Hollywood silliness.

Perhaps Dunst — who had previously said that she’d return if Maguire and Raimi did too — is holding out for a better deal.

While it’s unlikely that they’ll replace Dunst as Spidey’s love interest Mary Jane Watson, but it wouldn’t be unrealistic for them to just not use her character, and maybe go with another love interest.
