How sad that you have to have a family member with special needs to know how terribly demeaning this film is to people living with special needs. It's really not supposed to be that way. People should just know that slurs can really hurt. Ben Stiller just hides behind his satire argument. He knew enough to call in people to make sure that no African-American would be insulted by Robert Downey Jr.'s character in black face. Did he not know how upsetting his Simple Jack character was or maybe he knew and didn't care. I mean, people who are "retarded" just sit in a corner and drool all day, right? If Ben Stiller had a kid with special needs, then Simple Jack just wouldn't exist. No one seems to care about what happens to all those special needs kids when they went back to school in September and were the new Simple Jacks, or were called full retards. I live for the day when I bump into Ben Stiller in the street and tell him about all the hurt he caused in the making of the "hilarious" film. To know that you cause pain to another and continue to do so puts all of you in the bully category.

I guess I went into this movie knowing it was going
to be a true over-the-top, slap you in the face with
the silliness kind of adventure.

And I loved it.

I agree that the movie would've totally fallen apart
without Downey Jr. -AND- Baruchel.
Jay kept them all grounded in a way which was believable,
even for an un-believable premise.

I have no problem suspending my disbelief every time
I enter a movie theater.
It's necessary to enjoy some of the tripe celluloid
Hollywood doles out.
But that's what makes this movie that much more funny...
the fact that it skewers the very mother which spawned it.

I will definitely be buying a copy of this movie, and
going "full retard".

Yup I think you got it. I had almost the same reaction as you did to this movie. It's not the type of thing I usually like but there's enough smart humour in with the dumb humour to keep me watching... and Downey was just glorious. I ended up seeing it like, 6 times at the theatre, every time a bit puzzled as to why I love it so much. Joy. Yup you nailed it.
