I think the best director for a WWII era film would be Edward Zwick (Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, and the new Daniel Craig/Liev Schreiber movie I can’t remember the name of). And I wouldn’t mind seeing DiCaprio in the role as Rogers either. Swipe footage of him as a skinny as kid from Basketball Diaries and CGI the crap out of it for pre-super soldier stuff. After seeing Benjamin Button and Tim Roth’s HULK scenes I have no doubt CGI will make this a phenomenal movie. If you have a good director and a plus-level actor. That said, the only other actor I think has the right “look” might be Paul Walker but I don’t know if he has the chops. Get the kid from 3rd Rock/Brick to play B. Barnes (Gordon-Levitt? Is that his name?)

I am a big fan of The Rocketeer (movie & comics), and Captain America. Personally, I’m pumped for this movie… and as much as I love comic books, I don’t usually get too excited for comic book movies.

i never really like the captain america storyline till the winter soldier arc…

cap was always too goofy.

I don’t think there’s much to worry about, though. The studio is usually the party asking for things to be toned down. And, to be honest, I kinda thought Iron Man was about on the same level at The Rocketeer, intensity-wise. And that movie was pretty damn amazing.

Despite it being a World War II flick, which just BEGS for a little more grit, I’ll be happy if the Cap flick is on the same level as The Rocketeer and Iron Man.
