Quite possibly the biggest movie of the summer may just be J.J. Abrams re-launch of the beloved Star Trek franchise. MTV was lucky enough to visit the set and chat with some of the cast and crew about the project.
After their visit, they released a small featurette with an intro from Zachary Quinto (Spock), which is basically the trailer we’ve seen intertwined with short statements from a bunch of the actors, including: Simon Pegg (Scotty), Chris Pine (James Kirk), John Cho (Sulu), and Zoe Saldana (Uhura), as well as director J.J. Abrams. There’s also supposedly some new footage mixed in, but nothing stand-out. You’d have to look closely to see it.
Basically, the actors just chat about how cool the project is and how exciting it is and how Abrams is like “… a 10-year old kid who’s making movies in his backyard.”
As you know, this new Star Trek will give us a look at the early days of James T. Kirk and his crew on the USS Enterprise. The movie will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.

I wonder if they are throwing out all the original canon in the reboot, that the enterprise was originally captained by Robert April and then Christopher Pike before Kirk. That Spock was the science officer for Pike and Kirk served on several ships before becoming captain of the enterprise, etc.
I’m torn about that kind of thing, I suspect most people simply don’t care about details and want a fun movie but what sets the Trek universe apart from so many is the internal consistency and rich character history. I guess we will see how it works out, I am looking forward to it!
@Mark – I understand the purists point of view, but at some point, things gotta have breathing room for fresh talent to give their take. If it bugs you too much, just imagine it as an alternate dimension. Problem solved :P
This movie looks like a lot of fun.
It is exactly an “alternate dimension”. Plotwise, the big picture is that time travellers have thrown out the original canon. It’s already revealed that Kirk’s parents were killed, and hinted that Spock meets Spock. This creates room for a true and total reboot while maintaining a veneer of continuity. New actors, new audience, new stories and new nostalgia pains. I hope that the new writers can write. If they can, everything else will be fine.
