BSG

It’s being reported that the United Nations is going to hold a type of panel specifically for the TV show Battlestar Galactica. The plan being, to look at the way the show has focused on real issues our world faces, and how they were dealt with on the show. For those of you who are fans of the old Battlestar Galactica or just don’t like the current show, which is set to air its series finale in a depressing weeks time — you need only read this story to see just how brilliant, important, and just plain damn good it really is.

Battlestar Galactica is known as a massively entertaining science fiction show about the final thousands of human beings left in the universe struggling to find a new home where they can rebuild humanity, all while fighting the highly-evolved Cylon race, who are attempting to wipe out the “weak” human species. But on top of this solid foundation, Galactica infuses a vast array of human tendencies, political strategies and downfalls, religions, and all-around real world issues that we see every single day in our own lives.

Click over for a brief description of the panel, as well as who will be involved.

On March 17, there will be a “Battlestar” retrospective at the U.N. in New York and a panel discussion of how the show examined issues such as “human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism, human rights and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faith,” according to Sci Fi.

Taking part in this retrospect will be series creator and executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, as well as Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama) and Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin).

Representing the United Nations will be: Craig Mokhiber, Deputy Director of the New York office of the High Commisioner for Human rights; Radhika Coomaraswamy, who is a special representative for the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict; and lastly, Robert Orr, who is the Assistant Secretary-General for policy planning for the executive office of the Secretary-General.

Whoopie Goldberg will handle moderating duties for the discussion.

The Sci-Fi channel has assured fans that the panel will be recorded and that they will let everyone know when it will be available to check out.

I’m not quite sure if the U.N. is looking to BSG for suggestions or answers or if this is all just for fun. If they are looking for answers, that may be a little scary, for sure. It’s all pretty amusing though.

  2. A couple months ago, I was in total approval of BSG ending before it ran itself into the ground. One would hate to see such a stellar show do what so many others have done, and try to milk it till it becomes boring and dry (ahem, X-Files, Millennium…I’m talking to you…)

But now as the end draws nigh, I’m more certain every day that I will downright MOURN the end of this show. It’s so fraking good!

  3. CA-PRI-CA! CAP-PRI-CA! CA-PRI-CA!
Here’s hoping that the prequel series will proudly carry on the BSG mythos and match Adama and company’s run on Sci-Fi.

  4. Sweet! BSG and UN! I bet the real purpose is to pitch the first in a line of Internationally owned space battle ships!

On an *ahem* serious note… Whoopie Goldberg? Are you frakking serious? What does she have to do with anything?!?

  5. The panel discussion is today! Dang, it would have been awesome to wrangle an invite to it. Even if it is being moderated by Guinan.
