So, to chime in just a bit for the giggle of it:

On the Xavier's timing issue - It would make sense that the good Professor would have known about the installation for a while at this point. That said, without things like the X-Men and/or Magneto to help him out, he couldn't have just busted in and gotten them free. Well, he could have, but that would involve completely overriding someone's brain (or several someones) and especially at the time of the movie, his character just refused to do things like that.

On the Deadpool issue, I thought the did it reasonably well. Sure the added powers were a bit goofy, but being tortured and experimented on is well within his history and Ryan Reynolds did a fantastic job of making him quirky and nearly amoral at the beginning. Heck, all that was missing was him randomly stabbing one of his friends over potato chips :-)

I also had an issue with Gambit's interruption of the Wolverine/Sabertooth fight. I have no issue with Gambit picking a fight (after all, isn't that the way all good guys are introduced? by fighting other good guys before knowing they're good?). My issue is that Gambit jumped into it before letting Wolverine finish off Sabertooth. The Gambit I know and love would have waited that extra 10 seconds and "played a better hand". I don't mean to complain all too much, that one moment just made me raise an eyebrow at the writers a bit.

How come no one has mentioned that Wolverine and Sabretooth are not brothers? Way to ruin the movie from the start.

I can't get over how bad they ruined Deadpool, such promise. Kudos Marvel

Movie was great, but just some minor changes to the ending that I would have done to setup the next spin-offs.

Wolverine picks Sable up from the ground.
Stryker shoots wolverine, Sable Falls to the ground,
Stryker shoots again, knocks wolverine back,
Wolverine lunges toward Stryker,
Stryker empties the entire clip into wolverine.
Last bullet goes through his eye, CGI effects shows the bullet tearing through his eye and resting in his brain
Wolverine lies on the ground next to Silver Sable. Stryker walks over to Wolverine gun at the ready
Silver sable grabs his leg and tells him to point the gun at his head and pull the trigger
Stryker pulls the trigger and gun clicks, frusted sable tells him to walk until his feet bleed
Stryker walks off scene and Sable dies
Gambit comes in checks wolverine’s pulse,
checks Sable pulse
Wolverine begins to move and stands up, eye heals over
Gambit: “Look who just came back from the dead”
Wolverine looks confused unable to talk mutters “from the dead”
Gambit looks perplexed and says “Lets get you to a hosiptial mona-me”
As gambit reaches towards wolverine Wolverine backs up and extends claws and starts to growl
Gambits steps back and eyes and stick glowing “Easy there ”
Wolverine: struggles to talk, mutters “...Easy..."
Gambit stares back and reaches into his jacket
Wolverine sees Gambit reaching and lunges toward gambit
Gambit spins out of the way and runs off while throwing glowing cards in the air behind him as he leaves
Wolveine runs after but is blown off his feet from cards
Wolverine shakes it off and gets up. Gambit is no where to be seen
Looks at Sable for a while trying to see who she is, confused look on his face
Runs off into woods claws drawn.

Go to Stryker walking. Cue Stryker scene

End Credit roll by, Dead pool head seen, eyes open and shh.
Deadpool picks up head and says “Hey look fellas this one talks”
Looks down and sees sworded arm, “and comes with a free prize”
“How come you guys didn’t come with prizes”
Deadpool toses head into netted bag full of weapon XI heads.
Deadpool walks off

honestly i agree with everything Spoilerific-ass said.....although i hatd that deadpool also had cyclops powers. It also would have been cooler if they had him put on the suit because it would have made more since with him having the teleporting powers. But overall i really did think the movie was great. I just saw it yesterday and id go see it again.

I thought what Alexx said in terms of Silverfox. I don't think she was actually recruited until the time of the fake death and Stryker was lying about it being a set up from the beginning.

Perhaps Xavier was curious when he found a bunch of mutants gathered at a nuclear power plant.

Gambit was more intent going after the guy that gave him an adamantium shoulder to the nose, I know I would be. And I believe the next origins movie is going to be Magneto, so there is probably going to be a good deal about Xavier in it.

Why did Gambit fight Wolvie? Ok, the first card to the chest that blew him out of the building kinda made sense, but then when he was outside and they both saw Sabertooth and Gambit still attacked Wolverine. Why didn't Gambit go after Sabertooth??
WTF?

"Lastly, I’m quite familiar with the world of X-Men, I KNOW Xavier is psychic! I guess I phrased it poorly because what I meant was how did it come to be that he’d be looking for these mutants? That is not explained at all. Just because he’s psychic doesn’t mean that he knows everything at all times. Did he already know that Stryker was rounding up mutants? Did he already know Scott? It’s poor scripting to have him just show up like that — even though I was happy as hell to see him."

True. Maybe Xavier origin story will be next or did the X-men tril already cover that.

"The film should stand on its own — you should not NEED supplement material to understand it."
Agreed.

@Spoilerific-ass:

Umm, first of all, learn to make a point without prefacing it with "Umm..."

Second, this is not a "review" as indicated by the fact that the title of this article is not "Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

I saw the movie ONCE and these were my initial thoughts. Just because I didn't catch ONE part -- where Xavier tells Scott the way out -- does not mean I have ADD.

I never said Logan's name issue was a plot hole. I'm merely wondering why he would use that name. I mean, in the film, he KILLED this man. Why take his name? I don't care one way or the other, but the truth is, they didn't make his name change very clear.

The dialogue was absolutely cliche and eye-roll inducing, I will stand by that. Did it make me hate the film? No. Did it make me personally roll my eyes? Yes. If you liked it, that's fine. I don't wish to deprive people of enjoyment -- I'm happy for you. These are just MY feelings about it.

You said "Stryker said it himself, they still needed her. He never said why, but it’s just the typical adjusting the deal after the fact situation; a man will to kill a military higher-up is clearly not beyond keeping his promises." EXACTLY -- why would he keep his end of the bargain? I don't feel like he needed her at all after Logan thought she was dead. Obviously, it was important to the film's "twist," but that's it.

In response to my comment on the farm couple's son's clothes, you said "Meh. Convenient, but so what?" Right, it was convenient, I didn't say anything derogatory about it, merely that it's a good think their son had good taste in clothes.

Lastly, I'm quite familiar with the world of X-Men, I KNOW Xavier is psychic! I guess I phrased it poorly because what I meant was how did it come to be that he'd be looking for these mutants? That is not explained at all. Just because he's psychic doesn't mean that he knows everything at all times. Did he already know that Stryker was rounding up mutants? Did he already know Scott? It's poor scripting to have him just show up like that -- even though I was happy as hell to see him.

And in conclusion, I'd like to say that one should never have to be familiar with source material in order to enjoy a film. The film should stand on its own -- you should not NEED supplement material to understand it. Therefore, one should not have to be acquainted with the X-Men universe in order to follow/understand the events of the movie.

Thank you for your lengthy response.

Second, this is not a “review” as indicated by the fact that the title of this article is not “Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

I saw the movie ONCE and these were my initial thoughts. Just because I didn’t catch ONE part — where Xavier tells Scott the way out — does not mean I have ADD.

I never said Logan’s name issue was a plot hole. I’m merely wondering why he would use that name. I mean, in the film, he KILLED this man. Why take his name? I don’t care one way or the other, but the truth is, they didn’t make his name change very clear.

The dialogue was absolutely cliche and eye-roll inducing, I will stand by that. Did it make me hate the film? No. Did it make me personally roll my eyes? Yes. If you liked it, that’s fine. I don’t wish to deprive people of enjoyment — I’m happy for you. These are just MY feelings about it.

You said “Stryker said it himself, they still needed her. He never said why, but it’s just the typical adjusting the deal after the fact situation; a man will to kill a military higher-up is clearly not beyond keeping his promises.” EXACTLY — why would he keep his end of the bargain? I don’t feel like he needed her at all after Logan thought she was dead. Obviously, it was important to the film’s “twist,” but that’s it.

In response to my comment on the farm couple’s son’s clothes, you said “Meh. Convenient, but so what?” Right, it was convenient, I didn’t say anything derogatory about it, merely that it’s a good think their son had good taste in clothes.

Lastly, I’m quite familiar with the world of X-Men, I KNOW Xavier is psychic! I guess I phrased it poorly because what I meant was how did it come to be that he’d be looking for these mutants? That is not explained at all. Just because he’s psychic doesn’t mean that he knows everything at all times. Did he already know that Stryker was rounding up mutants? Did he already know Scott? It’s poor scripting to have him just show up like that — even though I was happy as hell to see him.

And in conclusion, I’d like to say that one should never have to be familiar with source material in order to enjoy a film. The film should stand on its own — you should not NEED supplement material to understand it. Therefore, one should not have to be acquainted with the X-Men universe in order to follow/understand the events of the movie.

Thank you for your lengthy response.

If you don't like the movie, don't balme marvel friend...blame fox, supposedly fox puts out movies hastily so the rights don't revert back to marvel studios...iron man was awesome, incredible hulk was awesome...why? Because marvel studios did the movies and had complete control over the two movies. X men 3 sucked why? Because marvel didn't have control over the film. So other than the deadpool thing this movie was awesome.

Wow, you just WANTED to pick on this movie for your geek cred and did it badly. Cyclops having his glasses pre-Xavier, Sabertooth changing, etc. are bigger plot holes than:

    * Thank you Highlander, there can still only be one.

Umm, what?

    * The dialogue was beyond cliche and completely eye-roll inducing.

I didn't roll my eyes once. You want cliche, go watch Indy 4.

    * [a] The action was totally badass [b] and made up for the horrible dialogue.

Agreed to part a.

    * Hugh Jackman as Wolverine still rules.

Agreed.

    * Nothing against the actress who played Emma Frost, but she’s nothing like I imagined for this character. A better choice would have been Heroes‘ Ali Larter.

She fit the roll just fine. The real question is, why did her skin turn to cut diamonds from the jewelry store instead of just BECOMING diamond like in the comics? The comic version would actually make more sense.

    * Thank goodness those backwater farm folks had a son with such good taste in clothes.

Meh. Convenient, but so what?

    * I’m still not sure why Victor Creed killed Bolt.

Umm... to trick the others into thinking there was a problem so Stryker could steal their powers... a.k.a. the main plot of the movie. Don't take a nap during the show and maybe you'd have enjoyed it better.

    * James is Wolverine’s given name and he grew up thinking James Howlett was his father. It turns out that Victor Creed’s father Thomas Logan — who killed James Howlett — is really James’s father. James kills Thomas Logan, who reveals the truth to him as he dies. So why would Wolverine then go by the name Logan?

The same damn reason he did it in the comic, basically as a tribute and to hide. The one thing they actually stayed true to from Origins and you call it out as a plot hole? Whatever.

    * Why would Creed fake Silverfox’s death instead of actually just really killing her? She had a “deal” with Stryker, but once they got what they needed from her, why would they have let her live?

Stryker said it himself, they still needed her. He never said why, but it's just the typical adjusting the deal after the fact situation; a man will to kill a military higher-up is clearly not beyond keeping his promises.

    * If Silverfox’s powers of persuasion didn’t work on Logan and Creed, then why did Stryker send her to be with Logan in the first place? Why did he let Logan live in peace for six years?

He knew Wolverine would be the hardest to get DNA from, test the adamantium, etc. so he got the others' first and plotted how to trick Logan; it's not like he could get everybody's powers in a week. Nor would Logan let his guard down so quickly, so he had to let Silverfox make him fall in love with her naturally; that takes time.

Beyond that, how quickly could they build that testing facility in secret? Not very.

Again, part of the main plot of the movie. This movie actually had one of the more coherent plots I've seen in a comic movie, you just have to, you know, actually pay attention. Those with ADD shouldn't review movies I'm afraid.

    * As Silverfox was bleeding to death, she managed to grab hold of Stryker’s leg to use her mutant powers of persuasion on him. Instead of killing him, she tells him to walk until his feet bleed, I’m guessing she figured he’d drop dead from it eventually. Umm, this is the same guy who’s been killing people off and holding mutants captive and experimenting on them. Don’t you think that if you had the right and responsibility to kill someone, it would be this guy? By letting him live, she put other people’s lives in danger. Plus, how did her powers continue to work on Stryker after she died? Or for that matter, after she stopped touching him?

The same reason Batman never kills the Joker. And whoever said her powers stop once she lets go? If that's true than the jerk in the road wouldn't have moved once she took her hand off.

    * How did Scott Summers (Cyclops) know the way out of the facility?

Thanks to Professor X, the EXACT same way he led Wolverine in X-Men 1. Again, pay attention.

    * How did Professor Charles Xavier know where the mutants were being held and how did he manage to show up just as the youngsters escaped?

Because he's....... psychic. Welcome to the world of the X-Men.

    * Why is it so easy to fly your plane undetected onto Three Mile Island?

Now THAT truly didn't make sense.

The whole point of Silverfox's fake death was to motivate Wolverine to be bonded with adamantium. By the way, hearing a near flatline is pretty damn hard when you're super emotional, super human powers or not. Why would you be able to smell it?

She never was recruited by Stryker, she and Wolverine were genuine. Stryker only gets her after they fake her death. From that point on, she is working with him to get her sister. She's kept alive for the same reason Sabretooth is; she's useful.

She doesn't kill Stryker because if she did, one it conflicts with his appearance many years later in the X2 film and second, because that would go against her Native American beliefs. She continually shows reason (persuasion) over violence, especially in how she advises Wolverine that he is "not an animal".

Cerebro is obviously how Professor X finds them and it is he who tells Scott the way out. This makes perfect sense to the movie since it is EVERYTHING that happens before Wolverine is at Xavier's school for mutants.

I think it was fitting that there was "cliche dialogue" since all of these movies are based on 50 something year old comic books. How do you think the dialogue was in those? Besides think time period, Logan goes through about 4 major US wars.

Bolt was killed by Stryker though Sabretooth because he was part of the old team and as incentive to lure Wolverine into helping his cause.

I'm not worried about the deadpool thing too much, I think they'll manage to "salvage" this character in spin-offs and such. I was thrilled to see Ryan Reynolds period, and even more excited that Taylor Kitsch was a kickass Gambit.

Overall, this movie was fantastic BESIDES the fact that they obviously spent about $20 dollars on Wolverin's adamantium claws when you see them close up in the bathroom scene.

Great review, I'm pretty much with you on all your points. I saw both endings, the japanese bar one while on vacation in Hawaii and then the Weapon XI ending here in Memphis last night. My thoughts:

Way too many Darth Vader "Noooooooooo" moments. Terrible CGI on the claws.
Never explained why Sabertooth turns into Tyler Mane in the next film.

Too many unanswered questions.

Why couldn't Wolverine smell or hear Silverfox's "near flatline"

How did Cyclops get those ruby quartz glasses?

I need one of those Adamantium bullets after seeing this movie.
