This same tactic was used for Attack of the Clones. What was the big reveal for that film? Yoda. Lightsaber fight. OMG. They threw in the shot of his saber floating up to his hand and simultaneously lighting up in one movement in a tv spot a few weeks after release, as it was no longer a secret to those who cared, and had already seen the film opening weekend anyways.

So the short of it: nothing new.
