Watch Now: 1990’s ‘Captain America’ Movie

captainamericaHulu now has the 1990’s Captain America film is available now for online viewing for U.S. residents. Watch the movie embedded here below.

Don’t remember this movie? There’s a good reason for that.

Originally scheduled for theatrical release in the United States in 1990, the film was shelved, later to resurface in 1992 in the direct-to-video market. And if anyone remembers what it meant to go direct-to-video in the 90s, you’ll know that it was the ultimate sign of “no confidence” from a movie studio.

Me personally, I don’t think Captain America was all that bad; actually, I found it quite enjoyable, despite the changes made to the story from the Marvel comic books. The movie begins in Italy during World War II and the first six or so minutes of the movie are entirely in Italian, but for some reason the Hulu version does not have subtitles. But I found the story simple enough to follow. Basically, keep in mind: Nazis bad; America good.

Matthew Salinger (son of author J.D. Salinger) stars as Steve Rogers, a young man who’s ineligible for the draft because of a bout with polio. During World War II, Rogers volunteers for a top secret government program that would chemically turn him into a super-soldier, codename Captain America. After Rogers is transformed, the scientist who invented the super-soldier serum and who is the only person who knows the formula is killed by a Nazi infiltrator, leaving Rogers to complete his first mission — to prevent the villainous Red Skull (the Nazi’s super-soldier) from launching a missile straight at the White House — alone. Ronny Cox (Total Recall) stars as the good-natured U.S. President Kimball and Ned Beatty (Superman: The Movie) as his childhood friend and Pultizer Prize-winning journalist.

Captain America is not out on DVD (or on VHS for that matter), so watch it now while you can. It should help to hold you over a bit until Marvel’s big-budget The First Avenger: Captain America hits theaters on May 6, 2011.
