The first trailer and poster for the upcoming live-action/CGI cartoon adaptation Yogi Bear has shown up online. The movie will join Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Marmaduke, Scooby-Doo, and the upcoming release of The Smurfs as similar cartoon makeover movies we’ve seen made.
Yogi Bear features the voices of Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo-Boo. The live-action roles will be filled with Anna Faris as Rachel, Tom Cavanagh (TV’s Ed) as Ranger Smith, and Cloverfield’s T.J. Miller as Ranger Jones.

Is ‘Cyanide & Happiness’ A Global Internet Sensation? The U.S. Gov Doesn’t Think So
Irish-born illustrator Dave McElfatrick of popular Explosm.net web comic Cyanide & Happiness is asking for help in obtaining a work visa to the United States so he can continue working on animated shorts with co-creators Matt Melvin and Rob DenBleyker.
The only problem is that the U.S. doesn’t think C&H is legitimately popular enough to merit the type of visa McElfatrick would need to work in the country, which just seems insane until you realize how ridiculous it would sound trying to explain the humor of some of their comics to your grandma and/or crochety old uncle.
A little background on C&H for all of you who might be unfamiliar with it right off the bat: According to Alexa, Explosm.net is ranked #2,773 most popular website globally and #1,358 most popular in the U.S. America accounts for over 40 percent of the site’s total traffic. Yet, this isn’t sufficient enough to prove that he’s worthy of the visa apparently.
McElfatrick is asking fans who want to help to sign a petition and spread the word about his plight.

SDCC 2010: DC Comic Panels Roundup
 |
Posted by Guy_Jen | July 29th, 2010 at 6:29 pm |

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of big reveals from either DC or Marvel about their upcoming material that had not already been announced in some form or fashion. Therefore, I am just going to review what DC talked about throughout most of their panels at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.
Two of my most anticipated books that were announced at the Con were Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison and Flash Speedforce by Geoff Johns. I am super pumped by the descriptions of both of these books and I am already ready to add these books to my pull list. I definitely suggest that everyone keeps their eyes out for these. Also of note but not newly announced is the Batman Earth One by Geoff Johns about a Batman who fails at everything and his gadgets don’t work.

Amazon Kindle: New Slimmer, Faster Wi-Fi Version Only $139
Today, Amazon unveiled its newest version of the Kindle, their popular e-book reader, now available for pre-order in Wi-Fi and 3G + Wi-Fi versions.
The newest version of the wireless reading device still has the 6-inch screen, but now has a smaller, sleeker frame, eliminating a lot of the extra useless space from the previous version, and weighs only 8.7 ounces. Most importantly, it has a new high-contrast e-ink screen, making it even more like reading a paper book; plus, you’re still about to read from the Kindle in bright sunlight with no glare.
The new Kindle — Wi-Fi available in graphite; 3G in both white and graphite — has faster page-turns and quieter keyboard buttons, and can store up to 3,500 ebooks. Also, you can download books in under 60 seconds, and with the wireless turned off, the device lasts for one month on a single charge.
The Wi-Fi model is priced at $139, while the 3G + Wi-Fi model, which includes FREE 3G wireless coverage, is priced at $189. Both versions ship on August 27, 2010.

SDCC 2010: Watch Now: Wil Wheaton and Cast of ‘The Big Bang Theory’

What’s better than having the entire cast of geeky hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory sit in on a panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con 2010? How about having Sheldon Cooper’s nemesis Wil Wheaton moderating said panel? That’s exactly what fans got this year in the convention center’s second largest meeting space.
After an unannounced performance of the theme song led by Barenaked Ladies and a clip reel of footage from the show [READ: SDCC 2010: Barenaked Ladies Perform ‘Big Bang Theory’ Theme At Cast Panel], the cast — Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg — was asked a variety of questions, including what Nayyar’s future as a Bollywood superstar was, what it was like working with Christine Baranski, and what super-hero identity they’d like to take on if given the chance. (Hint: Helberg definitely wouldn’t be Moist).
I fully expect their responses to be illustrated into a comic book and spread among the internets any day now. Check out video of the entire panel below…

Watch Now: ‘Thor’ Trailer From Comic-Con
At Comic-Con this past weekend, Marvel’s Thor was one of the biggest hits of the convention, where Marvel Studios debuted the trailer for the film [read SDCC 2010: Marvel Shows Off New ‘Thor’ Footage].
Now, the first trailer for Thor is now online. Watch it here below.
Prior to the Con, stills from the film were released that were less than stellar, causing fans to worry if Marvel could put off a Thor movie. After I saw this trailer at the Con (which was shown in 3D), I realized that the promo shots didn’t do the film any justice. This film looks great to me, judging by this footage.
Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, and Clark Gregg, and will be released on May 6, 2011.
[Update: Apparently, the video was taken down; the buzz on Twitter is that this was a leaked version of the trailer unauthorized by the studio. It ran about five minutes long.]

Will Eisner’s ‘A Contract With God’ Being Adapted To The Big Screen
 |
Posted by Vactor | July 29th, 2010 at 12:05 pm |
Comic book legend Will Eisner may have left this mortal plane in 2005, but his work continues to amaze all these years later. Similarly amazing is how long it took for adaptations of his work to hit the big screen.
Eisner was a pioneer in stretching the boundaries of narrative and storytelling in sequential art. The term, ‘Graphic Novel’ really came into our collective lexicon when Eisner’s monumental work, A Contract With God was published in October of 1978, and is now getting the big-screen treatment.
The book consists of four short stories — A Contract With God, The Super, The Street Singer, and Cookalein — all set in a Bronx tenement in the 1930s. The stories are semi-autobiographical, drawing heavily from Eisner’s own childhood experiences as well as those of his peers. The narratives are tied together by the common setting/theme of immigrant and first-generation experiences, across cultures.

Watch Now: ‘Monsters’ Trailer & Clip Offer ‘District 9′ Vibes

My favorite movies when it comes to pre-release hype are those little films that make a lot of noise on the festival circuit or have an entertaining viral marketing campaign behind them. Monsters is a movie like that.
The movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, a relative newcomer with a few unknown titles under his belt supported by some visual effect work. It tells the story of a time when life has been discovered in other parts of the universe and a probe has been sent out to collect samples. The probe crashes in Central America on its way back in, and new lifeforms begin emerging and growing rapidly.

The American remake of Swedish horror film Let the Right One In had been difficult for many people to swallow up to that point, but after said panel and this brand new trailer, we’re all beginning to realize that this actually looks really, really good.
Let Me In stars Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), and Elias Koteas (Shutter Island). It’s directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods).

Next Generation Home Entertainment Could Have 20 Times The Space Of Blu-ray Discs

IGN has the details on a brand new technology being developed that will likely one day replace the Blu-ray discs that are currently in the process of trying to make DVDs extinct.
It was announced that Sony has teamed up with Tohoku University to develop a new blue-violet ultrafast laser technology, and that initial testing has shown significant promise for the future of storage capacities. According to the reports, this new technology could hold around 1 terabytes of space — 20 times the space available today. Blu-ray discs hold around 50GBs of space at the moment, and movies and games don’t easily reach that maximum capacity.

Peter Berg’s ‘Battleship’ Adds Singer Rihanna To Cast

Another member has been added to the cast of Peter Berg’s board game/alien invasion film, Battleship. The actor isn’t actually an actor or actress by trade at all, but a big time pop music superstar, and her name is Rihanna.
The job will mark Rihanna’s feature acting debut, and she joins previously cast talents Taylor Kitsch, who will play the lead role, and Alexander Skarsgård, who will play his brother. The screenplay is written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, and is currently aiming at a June 18, 2012 release date.

SDCC 2010: ‘Paul’ Panel With Simon Pegg, Nick Frost & Seth Rogen (With Video)
The cast of Paul, the upcoming sci-fi comedy by Superbad director Greg Mottola and written by the film’s stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, took to the stage at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to debut a special clip reel made specifically for the fans in attendance. This can be somewhat verified by the fact that it wasn’t censored for the general viewing audience due to the few instances of well-timed cursing.
The video opened with a loud pop from the crowd as they showed fanboys Clive Gollings (Frost) and Graeme Willy (Pegg) in the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con. The two are on a journey to Roswell, New Mexico, where they encounter a classic-style gray alien named Paul, voiced by Seth Rogen. The trio are being chased by Special Agent Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman) and Agent Haggard (Bill Hader) and accidentally kidnap Ruth Buggs, played by Kristen Wiig.
With the exception of Wiig, the aforementioned actors sat on the panel along with Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor, and Joe Lo Truglio — who actually stood in during the portions of the film that contained the CGI Paul.

SDCC 2010: Watch Now: ‘True Blood’ Cast Panel With Alan Ball And Charlaine Harris

At least one woman in every row of the crowded (4,500 capacity) ballroom was wearing a Merlotte’s Bar & Grill t-shirt at the True Blood panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which featured nearly the entire cast of the HBO hit vampire drama.
Show creator Alan Ball kicked off the panel with a special Comic-Con preview reel before having the cast — including Joe Manganiello (Alcide), Kristin Bauer (Pam), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), Denis O’Hare (Russell), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette), Rutina Wesley (Tara), Stephen Moyer (Bill), and Anna Paquin (Sookie) — come on stage to talk shop about the huge response this season.
A lot of ground covered but some of the highlights include: Alan Ball has never seen/read Twilight; novelist Charlaine Harris said she plans to do 13 Sookie Stackhouse books that may or may not mirror the story that happens in the television show; and Snoop Dogg really is a fan of True Blood and scheduling has prevented him from making a guest appearance in the past. [READ: Snoop Dogg Really Likes HBO's 'True Blood']
There’s also an explicit description of how Moyer filmed the sex scene in which he twists his former vampire lover’s head around while… well you get the point.

‘Twilight’ Star Edi Gathegi Cast As Darwin In ‘X-Men: First Class’
 |
Posted by Vactor | July 28th, 2010 at 11:37 am |
If you’re like me, you often stay awake at night, wondering if those wonderful Twilight Saga fans are also fans of the Uncanny X-Men. I haven’t come to a solid conclusion as of yet, but if there is a contingent of X-Men/Twilight fans, have I got new for you!
Edi Gathegi (Laurent in the Twilight films) has become the latest actor to join Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. Gathegi will be playing the young mutant, Darwin. As you X-fanatics know, Darwin’s mutant ability is to reactively evolve. This means he’s able to grow gills to breathe with while underwater, become fire retardant when exposed to flames, if he sees M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, he goes blind, saving him from viewing that it.
The Darwin character first appeared in X-Men: Deadly Genesis, a comic book arc that revealed the identity of the third Summers brother to be Vulcan. Darwin was a former friend of Vulcan’s, and ends up teaming with him as part of a rescue operation to save Cyclops and company from impending doom on Krakoa, the Living Island. The mission was a huge disaster and led to the team’s apparent demise, but Vulcan and Darwin manage to survive the incident.

SDCC 2010: ‘Salt’ Panel With Angelina Jolie & Liev Schreiber

Considering that worldwide mega-star Angelina Jolie’s new action-spy movie, Salt, was raring up for release this weekend, it seemed a bit strange that they would hold a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.
Nevertheless, the panel was held and Jolie herself was in attendance (to the many dropping jaws of fanboys galore, no doubt) to promote her new venture. She was joined by Liev Schreiber, director Phillip Noyce, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
The movie tells the story of a CIA agent who’s accused of being an undercover Russian spy. The accusations force her to go on the run, trying her best to avoid being captured while also attempting to prove her innocence.
Because Salt was all but out when the panel was held, not much was shared here. It was just a cameo appearance of sorts to say hi to the Comic-Con faithful, show some footage, and answer fan questions. Things started off with trailer for the movie. Surely almost everyone there had seen something from the movie already, but it’s always nice for those who are excited about a movie to see something new.

SDCC 2010: Mondo Marvel Reveals Future Books
 |
Posted by Guy_Jen | July 27th, 2010 at 8:17 pm |

That’s right Marvel Zombies, the Mondo Marvel panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con started off with a bang. Marvel’s new Senior V.P. Creator and Content Development C.B. Cebulski announced a little over 10 new series and limited series.
This was all followed up by Brian Michael Bendis saying he was excited that the character Killraven was coming back to the mainstream. Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s newly appointed Head of Television, talked about the upcoming plans for some Marvel anime project, the first of which is featuring Iron Man.
Well I should probably jump right into it then because what everyone is here for, just like at the panel, was the titles being announced. The first announcement was that a new Loki series starting in October 2010. Not many more details could be announced for this series.

SDCC 2010: ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Panel With Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter & More

The panel for Resident Evil: Afterlife was held at Comic-Con 2010 this past weekend. This is a movie with an uphill battle in front of it due to the fact that quality has seemed to go down with each new movie released since the first, and that it’s a movie that fully embraces the hostile 3D takeover currently going on.
The panel opens with the introductions of director Paul W.S. Anderson and stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller. They kick things off by premiering the exclusive look at the recently released first trailer in its 3D form. If you’ve not seen the regular 2D trailer, you can check it out below to see what was shown.
The first topic discussed is of course 3D, and Anderson goes into how he’s always liked 3D and always thought it was a great idea. But it wasn’t until James Cameron came around with Avatar that the director knew it was something really special, and that he not only needed his new movie in 3D, but he had to use the same cameras that Cameron used. He thinks eventually 3D will be the benchmark in filmmaking and he plans on making all of his movies using it from here on out.

Listen Now: Ryan Reynolds Recites Green Lantern Oath
During the Warner Bros Green Lantern panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, the film’s star Ryan Reynolds finally publicly recited the Green Lantern oath.
During the Q&A portion of the panel, a cute little very young boy wearing a Green Lantern t-shirt came up to the microphone and asked Reynolds what it felt like to say the Green Lantern oath. In response, Reynolds said he’d show him what it was like and as the crowd fell silent, he recited the oath.
In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light
We have it all on audio, so listen to it right here below.
Also, check out the newly released character posters from the film, as well as our extensive coverage of the Green Lantern SDCC 2010 panel, which includes a description of the footage that was shown.

SDCC 2010: ‘Let Me In’ Panel & Footage Description

Nothing makes true movie fans more angry than hearing about a brilliant foreign film getting an American remake, sometimes before the original is even released itself. Examples include The Ring (Ringu), The Grudge (Ju-On), Quarantine ([REC]), and the latest title, Let Me In, which is a remake of Swedish hit Let the Right One In.
The thing about Let Me In, however, is that the more people see and hear of it, the more it begins to look like it might become a legit new film. This possibility was elevated to a new level this past weekend during Comic-Con 2010, where the movie and its cast and crew made a lot of people believers.
The panel opens with a new trailer from the movie. The first trailer was decent but this new trailer really shows off how dark this movie will be, and some of the chemistry that the film’s two young stars share with one another.
Next up comes the introduction of director Matt Reeves, stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Richard Jenkins, and Chloe Moretz.
