Kevin Smith is a household name here at Geeks of Doom HQ. He a comic book and movie writer, a movie director, a frequent guest on the podcast of our friends over at Slashfilm, and he attends comic conventions yearly with the sole aim of making a room full of 5,000 geeks laugh for an hour. His commitment to all things geek is beyond reproach. So when our friends over at Titan Books asked us if we'd like to run an exclusive excerpt from his new book Shootin' the Sh*t with Kevin Smith, as well as a giveaway, I nearly broke gmail answering 'Hell Yes!' so fast.

So, without further preamble here's an excerpt from Shootin' the Sh*t where Kevin Smith and his daughter Harley (you gotta love that he named his daughter after a Batman villain) discuss the finer points of old school Mix Tapes vs. the new school of iPod culture.

Lastly, check below the excerpt where you can enter to win your very own copy of Shootin' the Sh*t from Geeks of Doom [...]

While all the geeks and gals of doom were filing into Hall H on Friday at the San Diego Comic-Con we were handed gold tokens bearing the Flynn's Arcade logo on the front and a "Home of Tron" slogan on the back. You can see this very cool marketing keepsake (which I also made into my new custom Tron Legacy desktop picture) to the right of this paragraph. Sometime later during a Disney panel it was announced that if the bearer of this coin were to show up at J Street & 1st Avenue in downtown San Diego later in the day they could be used to gain access to special surprise.

Those who did show up on J Street, like Devindra Hardawar from /Film and Katey Rich from Cinema Blend, were outfitted with a black light and a map and were instructed to search the surrounding San Diego streets for "Flynn Lives" posters, which according to Devindra contained "hidden coordinates on the posters, which will lead to a certain location on the map." The payoff for this elaborate scavenger hunt throughout the streets of San Diego was eventually making your way to the front door Flynn's Arcade itself -- which had been fully recreated at 335 6th Street. Clearly the marketing department at Disney was intent on creating a lot of buzz (and fun!) for Tron Legacy during Comic-Con. [Read Devindra's account here; read Katey's account here.] [...]

Land of the Lost, people!

This is one of those shows that I grew up watching and for some strange reason just loving it to death. As far as I'm concerned Land of the Lost is geek T.V. personified. And yeah, I knew just how cheesy it was even then, but that didn't hamper my enjoyment one bit. I have to admit that I thought watching the SciFi channel's Land of the Lost marathon the other day might accidentally open my eyes to some kind of 'wrongness' about my feelings for it but I gotta say after all these years I STILL love Land of the Lost. Sue me. :P

With the Will Ferrell headed redux heading to theaters this week I'm actually kinda excited... and now it's time for YOU to get excited too, because we here at Geeks of Doom are giving away a rowboat full of Land of the Lost schwag to two lucky readers!

There is magic in the world, my people. You know how I know this? Because magical people keep giving us magical stuff to give away to our magical readers. So, who among you wants to win an XBOX 360, hmmmm?

Lux-Pain is set in historical Kisaragi City, a town plagued by mysteries from small mishaps to murders - with no logical explanation as to why these events occur. It seems “Silent”, a worm born through hate and sadness, has infected humans and forced them to commit atrocious crimes. The hero’s parents, Atsuki, are victims of such crimes.
New York Comic Con 2009 has come and gone already, hard to believe it went by so fast. The Geeks of Doom were out in full force, the first time we had a serious posse, so we hope you enjoyed all the convention coverage.

I had the chance to talk with the creative teams for DC Universe Online and the folks in the know at Marvel's digital comic initiative, as well as to all my favorite small and indie comic book publishers. I also got to play some alpha and beta game demos, and fill my schwag bags with a metric ton of coolness. We're gonna set up a contest to give away a large portion of the neat stuff we pick up on the floor, so if you're a comic and gaming fan keep an eye out for that; plus Empress Eve is putting together a list of favorite books snagged at the Con.

Here's a small taste of the Awesome I encountered on the show floor. Geeks of Doom loves Con attendees [...]

Morning comic fans o' doom,

It's that time of year again. The comic convention season is upon us and Geeks of Doom is poised to attack it like a raid on Ironforge (Horde FTW!). We woke up bright and early, made the trek to the Jacob K. Javits center and just picked up our press badges for New York Comic Con (aka NYCC). Currently I'm in line (thanks Stephen) to be let on to the convention floor so that I can have my comic-o-phile senses assaulted by waves upon waves of all that is to behold.

This is the first Comic Con that we Geeks of Doom are theoretically "ready" for (heh, well that remains to be seen). We've got a whole crew of Doom Writers heading down for the weekend to cover the events from as many angles as a icosahedron. The pantheon of GoDs in attendance are (at last count) myself, Empress Eve, ScarletScribe, Meegatron, TechGOnzo, Jack Bauerstein83 & his trusty sidekick CamGirl. and Totally Bitchin', I'm told there may be a special appearance by Missing Linc as well.

Jack & CamGirl will be roaming the exhibition floor doing impromptu video interviews and giving away tons of cool prizes to attendees. Keep an eye out for him if you'd like to get your chance to win some free DVDs, books, shirts, hats, stickers, and more. Definitely tune in and subscribe to the Geeks of Doom YouTube channel to see all of our video interviews and scenes from the floor. Also, if you have a question that you'd like Jack to ask someone on the floor, be it of a random person, artist/writer/celeb, etc.. email us or send it to @geeksofdoom on twitter and I can pretty much guarantee he will attempt to get it asked...

Ghoulish news, horror comic geeks! Independent comic publisher Chimaera Comics has formally announced the creation of a new horror imprint. The horror line has been aptly named Nightmaera and has announced half a dozen forthcoming titles, including A Violent End and Happy Panda Funtime Show.

The next bit of info actually gets me a little vaklempt, but as good as news of as a bunch of new horror comics is to a geek like me, equally amazing news is that Chimaera made the genius move of naming one of Geeks of Doom's favorite independent comic writers and advocate, Stephen Lindsay (Jesus Hates Zombies, Ham & Eggs) as Nightmaera's editor-in-chief. I've been a huge fan of Lindsay's work since the moment I stumbled upon it on ComicSpace a few years back and I couldn't think of a better choice to undertake a project like this. Lindsay has proven his mettle time and again and I, for one, am really looking forward to the stillborn two-headed mongrel thing that will be birthed from the loins of a dead ghoul.. uh, I mean... looking forward to checking out what a Lindsay-guided Nightmaera Comics will bring to the horror comic genre.

I wrote a scathing piece regarding the planned Crow remake that discussed how Hollywood is tearing up my favorite movies to bits and using them for kindling in a derelict's dumpster fire. It's a few weeks later and sure, I can rectify sound financial reasoning, but I still can't fathom a good artistic reason for remaking the Crow. Now I find myself in the equally unenviable position of writing about the upcoming Hellraiser remake. My initial reaction is an even deeper feeling of illness than a Crow remake, but attached writer/director Pascal Laugier was able to do something that Crow redux director Stephen Norrington was not -- instill me with a feeling of comfort for his decision to tackle the remake.

In an interview with The Northlander of AICN at a post-screening for his most recent horror film Martyrs, Laugier was asked about his plans for the Hellraiser remake, his motivation for accepting the project, and his thoughts on the omnipresent remake trend. For Laugier, remaking Hellraiser is "a child's dream coming true" and he has no intention of betraying Clive Barker's work. "I want to do a fresh film filled with a lot of unexpected and surprising things. At the same time, I want it to be connected to the real, original material," said Laugier [...]

Wow! This has been an amazing year for Geeks of Doom. Together, our team of selfless contributors has helped us publish over 1,750 articles this year -- reviews, features, news items, and opinion pieces from every corner of the geeky spectrum.

Our team of contributors has grown exponentially. So many AWESOME people have decided to freely pitch-in and help make Geeks of Doom what it is. We're nothing without our contributors and you all help create a fresh and interesting place for geeks like us to hang out and opine off a cliff. Thank you, guys and gals of DOOM! I mean it. THANK YOU!

We made a lot of great new friends in the film blogger community as well.
Ok, let's get the relevant details out of the way immediately. They're remaking The Crow and Stephen Norrington is being tapped to write and direct it.

The classic James O'Barr comic was adapted to screen in the nineties by director Alexy Proyas and it starred the late Brandon Lee in his final role. Lee was killed during filming in an eerie on-set firearms accident that hearkens back to a scene from Game of Death which starred his father Bruce Lee, who died from injuries sustained during the filming of a movie as well (well, the details are hazy on how the cerebral edema came about, but it's still eerie... deal). There were a few sequels: a part two which got a proper theatrical release but unfortunately went in the wrong direction. While the O'Barr comics had a palpable ethereal quality they were not overtly supernatural. The comic (and the original film) was a sanguine tale of revenge whose focus was on love and loss. But the sequel hijacked the most mediocre of other-worldly plot-elements from the first film and ran off a cliff with them creating their own absurd mythos.
