Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of big reveals from either DC or Marvel about their upcoming material that had not already been announced in some form or fashion. Therefore, I am just going to review what DC talked about throughout most of their panels at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

Two of my most anticipated books that were announced at the Con were Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison and Flash Speedforce by Geoff Johns. I am super pumped by the descriptions of both of these books and I am already ready to add these books to my pull list. I definitely suggest that everyone keeps their eyes out for these. Also of note but not newly announced is the Batman Earth One by Geoff Johns about a Batman who fails at everything and his gadgets don’t work [...]

What’s better than having the entire cast of geeky hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory sit in on a panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con 2010? How about having Sheldon Cooper’s nemesis Wil Wheaton moderating said panel? That’s exactly what fans got this year in the convention center’s second largest meeting space.

After an unannounced performance of the theme song led by Barenaked Ladies and a clip reel of footage from the show [READ: SDCC 2010: Barenaked Ladies Perform ‘Big Bang Theory’ Theme At Cast Panel], the cast — Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg — was asked a variety of questions, including what Nayyar’s future as a Bollywood superstar was, what it was like working with Christine Baranski, and what super-hero identity they’d like to take on if given the chance. (Hint: Helberg definitely wouldn’t be Moist).

I fully expect their responses to be illustrated into a comic book and spread among the internets any day now. Check out video of the entire panel below [...]

The cast of Paul, the upcoming sci-fi comedy by Superbad director Greg Mottola and written by the film’s stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, took to the stage at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to debut a special clip reel made specifically for the fans in attendance. This can be somewhat verified by the fact that it wasn’t censored for the general viewing audience due to the few instances of well-timed cursing.

The video opened with a loud pop from the crowd as they showed fanboys Clive Gollings (Frost) and Graeme Willy (Pegg) in the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con. The two are on a journey to Roswell, New Mexico, where they encounter a classic-style gray alien named Paul, voiced by Seth Rogen. The trio are being chased by Special Agent Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman) and Agent Haggard (Bill Hader) and accidentally kidnap Ruth Buggs, played by Kristen Wiig.

With the exception of Wiig, the aforementioned actors sat on the panel along with Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor, and Joe Lo Truglio — who actually stood in during the portions of the film that contained the CGI Paul [...]

At least one woman in every row of the crowded (4,500 capacity) ballroom was wearing a Merlotte’s Bar & Grill t-shirt at the True Blood panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which featured nearly the entire cast of the HBO hit vampire drama.

Show creator Alan Ball kicked off the panel with a special Comic-Con preview reel before having the cast — including Joe Manganiello (Alcide), Kristin Bauer (Pam), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), Denis O’Hare (Russell), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette), Rutina Wesley (Tara), Stephen Moyer (Bill), and Anna Paquin (Sookie) — come on stage to talk shop about the huge response this season.

A lot of ground covered but some of the highlights include: Alan Ball has never seen/read Twilight; novelist Charlaine Harris said she plans to do 13 Sookie Stackhouse books that may or may not mirror the story that happens in the television show; and Snoop Dogg really is a fan of True Blood and scheduling has prevented him from making a guest appearance in the past. There’s also an explicit description of how Moyer filmed the sex scene in which he twists his former vampire lover’s head around while… well you get the point.

Considering that worldwide mega-star Angelina Jolie’s new action-spy movie, Salt, was raring up for release this weekend, it seemed a bit strange that they would hold a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.

Nevertheless, the panel was held and Jolie herself was in attendance (to the many dropping jaws of fanboys galore, no doubt) to promote her new venture. She was joined by Liev Schreiber, director Phillip Noyce, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

The movie tells the story of a CIA agent who’s accused of being an undercover Russian spy. The accusations force her to go on the run, trying her best to avoid being captured while also attempting to prove her innocence.

Because Salt was all but out when the panel was held, not much was shared here. It was just a cameo appearance of sorts to say hi to the Comic-Con faithful, show some footage, and answer fan questions. Things started off with trailer for the movie. Surely almost everyone there had seen something from the movie already, but it’s always nice for those who are excited about a movie to see something new. [...]

That’s right Marvel Zombies, the Mondo Marvel panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con started off with a bang. Marvel’s new Senior V.P. Creator and Content Development C.B. Cebulski announced a little over 10 new series and limited series.

This was all followed up by Brian Michael Bendis saying he was excited that the character Killraven was coming back to the mainstream. Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s newly appointed Head of Television, talked about the upcoming plans for some Marvel anime project, the first of which is featuring Iron Man.

Well I should probably jump right into it then because what everyone is here for, just like at the panel, was the titles being announced. The first announcement was that a new Loki series starting in October 2010. Not many more details could be announced for this series [...]

The panel for Resident Evil: Afterlife was held at Comic-Con 2010 this past weekend. This is a movie with an uphill battle in front of it due to the fact that quality has seemed to go down with each new movie released since the first, and that it’s a movie that fully embraces the hostile 3D takeover currently going on.

The panel opens with the introductions of director Paul W.S. Anderson and stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller. They kick things off by premiering the exclusive look at the recently released first trailer in its 3D form. If you’ve not seen the regular 2D trailer, you can check it out below to see what was shown.

The first topic discussed is of course 3D, and Anderson goes into how he’s always liked 3D and always thought it was a great idea. But it wasn’t until James Cameron came around with Avatar that the director knew it was something really special, and that he not only needed his new movie in 3D, but he had to use the same cameras that Cameron used. He thinks eventually 3D will be the benchmark in filmmaking and he plans on making all of his movies using it from here on out. [...]

During the Warner Bros Green Lantern panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, the film’s star Ryan Reynolds finally publicly recited the Green Lantern oath.

During the Q&A portion of the panel, a cute little very young boy wearing a Green Lantern t-shirt came up to the microphone and asked Reynolds what it felt like to say the Green Lantern oath. In response, Reynolds said he’d show him what it was like and as the crowd fell silent, he recited the oath.

Nothing makes true movie fans more angry than hearing about a brilliant foreign film getting an American remake, sometimes before the original is even released itself. Examples include The Ring (Ringu), The Grudge (Ju-On), Quarantine ([REC]), and the latest title, Let Me In, which is a remake of Swedish hit Let the Right One In.

The thing about Let Me In, however, is that the more people see and hear of it, the more it begins to look like it might become a legit new film. This possibility was elevated to a new level this past weekend during Comic-Con 2010, where the movie and its cast and crew made a lot of people believers.

The panel opens with a new trailer from the movie. The first trailer was decent but this new trailer really shows off how dark this movie will be, and some of the chemistry that the film’s two young stars share with one another.

Next up comes the introduction of director Matt Reeves, stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Richard Jenkins, and Chloe Moretz. [...]

During the chaos that was San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Walt Disney Pictures held a little panel. Within this panel, a tiny little movie called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was touched on. Actual footage from the movie wasn’t shown, but a special guest by the name of Captain Jack Sparrow did make a surprise video appearance to the roar of the crowd.

Usually stuff like this doesn’t make its way to the eyes of everyone who can’t be at Comic-Con, but this particular footage has shown up online. We can’t offer any promises to how long it will be available for your viewing pleasure, but you can check it out by clicking over to the other side now!

The video is just Sparrow (Johnny Depp) relaxing outdoors with a bottle of rum and chatting about the upcoming movie to fans. There’s no movie footage or anything, but for fans of the movies who are excited about this new chapter, it’s exciting enough to see [...]

Another highly entertaining panel that was held during San Diego Comic Con 2010 was the one for James Gunn’s hero movie, Super. Gunn is best known as the director of the wonderful horror-comedy Slither, and he also wrote the screenplays for Scooby-Doo and Dawn of the Dead.

Super had one of the better panel lineups, bringing out Gunn, stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Nathan Fillion, Liv Tyler, Michael Rooker, and producers Ted Hope and Miranda Bailey.

The movie sounds like it’s along the same lines as Kick-Ass where people without superpowers fight evil. In it, Wilson plays the lead character, who calls himself the Crimson Bolt. He has no powers, but he does have a wrench he likes to use in confrontational situations. Looking at the cast and concept, you would think this was primed for gut-busting humor, but apparently it’s a very dark comedy with a lot of dramatic situations.

To open the panel, Gunn shows off a trailer as well as a scene from the movie. Again, this is a dark comedy, but Wilson beating the ever-loving hell out of someone who cut in line at the movies with his wrench got lots and lots of laughs. [...]

A panel for Sylvester Stallone’s action overdrive movie, The Expendables was held early on at Comic Con 2010.

This is one of the movies that you’ve likely seen a ton of times via TV spots and trailers that have been released over the past few months. The Expendables brings together a who’s who of action stars in an attempt to reclaim the beauty and brutality that were the action films of the ’80s, and nothing could sound more exciting.

The panel — moderated by Ain’t It Cools’ own head geek, Harry Knowles — featured Stallone, who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie. He was joined by Terry Crews, who offered up a little Old Spice P-P-P-P-P-P-POWER! by ripping his shirt open when he came out, Dolph Lundgren, UFC legend Randy Couture, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Bruce Willis, who peeked in for a few minutes having been there already for the RED panel. A cameo by a cameo actor — how perfectly fitting. [...]

Those looking forward to DC Universe: Online got a good look at the game on Saturday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con as the first teaser trailer was shown for the game. The trailer showed Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg taking on Cersei, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Black Adam, and Lex Luther in a battle in a bombed out city. After some fantastic action, Superman flies in to save the day, only to find out he’s too late, as Brainiac shows up with an invasion. We then learn that everything we have just seen has been in the future, and we then see Lex Luther go back in time to hopefully spread the power that will enable players to create their own heroes.

Those at the panel were lucky enough to gain VIP codes to access the beta for the game, which will go live on November 2nd. Other things discussed at the panel were the voice cast, which includes Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Adam Baldwin as Superman, James Marsters as Lex Luthor, and Gina Torres as Wonder Woman. The inclusion of Conroy and Hamill is sure to please a lot of fans of Batman: The Animated Series [...]

Director Zack Snyder and his cast of Sucker Punch, his follow-up to his successful Watchmen adaptation, was on hand for the Warner Bros panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

Snyder noted that, with his co-writer, he’d been working on the story for 8 years. He was motivated by the desire to create an original property “not based on a breakfast cereal or superglue, or anything like that.”

He then introduced the panel which included Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Emily Browning.

Browning plays Baby Doll, whose mother dies, and is placed by her father in an insane asylum to be lobotomized and needs to discover a way to escape, if only through the world inside her mind. Hudgens plays Blondie, who fires some of the biggest guns in the film [...]

Jon Favreau came out over a blare of loud rock music, thanked the Iron Man franchise for bringing him here again, and announced that since 3D requires shooting on digital video, and Cowboys & Aliens is technically a western, he wanted to shoot on film, so… the film will not be in 3D.

Favreau introduced the panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which included Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Last, but not least, he introduced Harrison Ford, who made his Comic-Con debut appearance. Understandably the crowd went absolutely nuts and gave him a long and rousing ovation. He came out in handcuffs, led by two security guards, a callback to a bit of unpleasantness earlier in Hall H where one attendee allegedly stabbed another over a seating arrangement.

There was an EXTREMELY brief Q&A session in which Ford was asked if when he was growing up, he ever envisioned a Comic-Con reception like this. No, he said, he just wanted to be a working actor. Craig was asked about the future of the Bond franchise, to which he replied that he has no information about it, but he wants it to get going as soon as possible [...]

Sony was present at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, and though they didn’t show off anything exciting from their reboot of Spider-Man, they did bring plenty of goodies to present for Priest, The Good Guys, and The Green Hornet.

They began with the new adaptation of Tokyo Pop graphic novel, Priest. The movie stars Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Stephen Moyer, Karl Urban, and Maggie Q, who were all in attendance. The movie tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world that’s been devastated by centuries of war between humans and vampires. A priest (Bettany), who fought in the last big war, comes out of hiding to track down some vampires who kidnapped his niece.

The panel opened with a teaser trailer (which you can actually see below…though I’m not sure for how long). After that they go into some questions for the group. Basically just questions about what drew them to the film and and Bettany re-teaming with director Scott Stewart (Legion) and such.

Big news for fans of NBC’s Chuck came on Saturday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con as the actress set to play Chuck’s mom in season 4 was revealed, and it’s none other than Linda Hamilton (The Terminator). In a show that has prided itself on having a lot of popular guest stars may have topped itself with this casting. Creators Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz spoke about the upcoming season and how the main plot running through the season will be Chuck’s (Zachary Levi) search for his mother.

If you ever get a chance to come to SDCC, I highly recommend checking out the Chuck panel, as it’s always a good time. This year’s panel opened with the Hamilton announcement and then cut into a performance by series band Jeffster dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance“. Then the cast was introduced and discussed the upcoming season as well as their yearly “Thank You” to the fans. If you’re a fan of the show, you always feel very appreciated after seeing one of their panels, and you can tell that this is a show with a very passionate fan base [...]

Marvel Studios gave fans at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con the very first look at their upcoming 3D feature film Thor, which isn’t due in theaters until 2011.

The panel included Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Kat Dennings, and director Kenneth Branagh, as well as producer Kevin Feige.

One valuable piece of information about the film was disclosed by director Branagh concerning Thor’s mortal life.

“We have some Don Blake surprises in this movie. So do not assume that he is not included,” Branagh revealed.

As far as the video they screened, I was ultimately satisfied. The 3D elements didn’t overpower the overall visuals and instead (at least from what I saw) added texture and a bit of depth to a few scenes. See the full description of the footage here below.

I’ll admit I was worried the movie was far too plastic and bright judging from the screen shots they provided in the week prior to SDCC. But I am happy to say that from the footage screened to the audience, I am fairly confident they could actually pull this off [...]

Fans saw their first glimpse of Captain America: The First Avenger at Marvel Studios panel today at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

The teaser trailer opened with lots of red, white, and blue imagery over top old World War II footage of soldiers marching in line and iconic imagery, like Hilter walking in Paris and U.S. soldiers rising the flag at Iwo Jima. The old video footage plays as FDR’s famous “Infamy Speech” is in voiceover.

When the black and white footage ends, we see the Captain America shield symbol, and then Captain America for the first time in a baggy unflattering suit, and finally the shield which is hurdled at the camera to end the clip.

The first glimpse of Captain America’s suit looked much like the prototype sketches that previously leaked online. The “mask” is more akin to something out of the Ultimates version rather than the classic suit that features tiny wings on the head [...]

At the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con today, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, off-handedly responded to a fan question about the decision to recast the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the upcoming Avengers film rather than asking Edward Norton to reprise the role from The Incredible Hulk.

“He’s not here today,” Feige said in response to the question during the Marvel Studios panel, which was simply “Ed Norton?”. He then basically took a page out of Norton’s classy statement explaining why he wasn’t attached to the project and declared that the panel wasn’t quite over (perhaps eluding to the Avengers announcement that came later on).

The crowd’s reaction, a mix of silence and booing across the room, seemed less than satisfied. This was also the case during the Avengers cast announcement when Avengers co-star and Comic-Con favorite Robert Downey Jr. introduced Mark Ruffalo, who then was brought on stage [...]
