According to Ian McKellen's official website, director Guillermo del Toro is getting ready to begin filming his epic two-part adaptation of The Hobbit in July.

McKellen, who is set to return to his role of the powerful wizard Gandalf, says that casting has begun in many different parts of the world and del Toro is now living in New Zealand near producer Peter Jackson and the studio where the movies are set to film. The Hobbit is of course based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, and is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy that Jackson turned into a massively-successful set of films in early this past decade.

Here is the full statement from McKellen's site:

THE HOBBIT's, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in July. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth.

The director Guillermo del Toro is now living in Wellington, close to the Jacksons' and the studio in Miramar. [...]

F*ck Crime! Kick-Ass.

I’ve been a Kick-Ass fan since before the first issue of the comic hit stands way back in February of 2008. The first viral marketing campaign for the comic was brilliant and it had me excited for the book even before it debuted. The dream team of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. didn’t hurt either. The awesomeness of the comic lead to a movie deal and the rest (we will soon see) is going to be history. Whether the movie catches on with mainstream audiences is yet to be seen, but it sure looks like it was a fun film to make.

Those fine fellows over at Titan Books sent us a copy of Kick-Ass Creating the Comic, Making the Movie and I couldn’t be more thrilled. At first glance you might dismiss the book as being little more than a lame movie-tie in whose sole purpose is to pilfer your wallets, but you’d be sorely mistaken. The book is so much more than that. It does a nice job of satisfying fans of all sorts. The comic fans will enjoy the insights from creators Millar and Romita and the film crowd will be salivating over on-set photos and film stills [...]

Seth Grahame-Smith has been busy on another book since releasing his popular Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and it takes the historical figure of President Abraham Lincoln and adds a few vampires. The book is titled Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and as you may have guessed, a new movie is being developed with none other than Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov attached as producers.

Grahame-Smith has been making quite a name for himself with his work taking classic literature and adding horrific spins to them. After Smith wrote Zombies, which of course took Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice and, well...added zombies, a whole new genre in literature has basically been created. Since that title's release, many different authors have written their own takes on classic literature and characters with zombies and aliens and all sorts of fun and nasty beasties.

Click on over to the other side to check out a trailer that was made specially Grand Central Publishing for the release of the new book. [...]

Watch the video here below!

Black Magic Sanction is the 8th book in the author's Rachel Morgan (also referred to as The Hollows) urban fantasy series about a bounty hunter-witch who battles supernatural beings of both human and non-human origin in a modern-day alternate history setting.

In this latest book, Rachel goes beyond the usual vampire and demon hunt as this time she must go up against her own kind, who seek to imprisonment the witch or worse! To win her freedom, she must enlist the help of her enemies, but can she trust them?

I've been researching some upcoming fantasy novels and had only a slight knowledge of the Rachel Morgan books, but when I mentioned her books to some of my friends, it turns out they all highly recommended the series. After watching the video and seeing how much the author loves her work and especially her characters, you can't help but want to see what this series is all about. It seems like just about every supernatural being from out of a D&D handbook makes an appearance and I'm intrigued to see how such characters are integrated into a modern-day setting [...]

London, 1838. Queen Victoria is crowned; she receives the orb, the sceptre, and an arsenal of blood-stained weaponry. Because if Britain is about to become the greatest power of the age, there’s the small matter of the demons to take care of first. Weaving a seamlessly lurid tapestry of royal biography, gothic horror and fist-gnawing comedy – with lashings of glistening entrails, decapitations, and foul demons – it lifts the veil on what really took place on the dark and cobbled streets of 19th-century England, offering a masterly new portrait of a legendary monarch and quite possibly the best Demon Hunter the world has ever seen [...]

If you're not familiar with the Quirk Classics branding, you might remember their first mashup Pride and Prejudice and Zombie where zombies were inserted into Jane Austen's literary classic. Ah, see, now you know what I'm talking about.

Android Karenina is co-written by Ben H. Winters, who took on Austen last year with Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.

According to Quirk, Android Karenina is "an enhanced edition of the classic love story set in a dystopian world of robots, cyborgs, and interstellar space travel." See the full official synopsis here below.

There's a pretty big business hiding behind the release of popular movie releases. This is the business of novelization, where authors write entire books adapted from movies in much the same way that some of our favorite movies were adapted from classic literature. The only problem is: very few people actually have any desire to read an entire book based on a movie that they've seen.

While it is not known whether an actual novelization will be written for the new biggest movie ever to be made, Avatar, but James Cameron has other plans for a book. The director has decided that an entire prequel story novel will be written, and instead of leaving it in the hands of others, Cameron is going to take care of it himself.

Avatar producer Jon Landau talked about the plan to have Cameron write the whole thing:

Jim is going to write a novel himself.

Not a novelization — and there is a distinction. A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things. [...]

It's being reported that 1019 Entertainment's Ralph Winter and Terry Botwick are developing a modernized re-telling of the tale of Frankenstein based on the series of books by acclaimed author Dean Koontz.

The hope is that a new franchise can be born. It will be set in modern New Orleans, where a successful businessman has secretly created a super-human monster named Deucalion. A couple of detectives meet come face-to-face with the monster while investigating a murder one day, and when they investigate a little further, they are lead to a world of manufactured human beings.

Koontz's first novel in the series is called Frankenstein: Prodigal Son, and was followed by two more books. It has also recently been adapted into a graphic novel format.

Here is a synopsis for his books.

Every city has secrets. But none as terrible as this. His name is Deucalion, a tattooed man of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who’s traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He arrives as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself. [...]

He was so ill––wet-eyed and weak––he didn’t think anything of it at first, was too hung-over for thinking or worry. But when he was swaying above the toilet, he glanced at himself in the mirror over the sink and saw he had grown horns while he slept.
The names Roland Emmerich and Isaac Asimov are about as opposite as two elements of the same basic spectrum can be.

Emmerich is known for his massive end of the world disaster films like Independence Day and 2012, but has also faced much criticism for his lack of other crucial story elements, specifically with titles like Godzilla, 10,000 B.C., and The Day After Tomorrow. Asimov is a legendary author and a master of the realms of science fiction literature. He has written over 500 books and was also a professor of biochemistry at Boston University, just to note a couple of his awe-inspiring lifetime accomplishments. His most popular work as an author are his seven-book creation known as the Foundation series.

So what do these two have in common? Well, Roland Emmerich is currently the man who holds the arduous task of trying to adapt Asimov's Foundation into blockbuster movies, of course! And with the knowledge that Emmerich is the man handling this, one of the most classic of series in science fiction literature, fans of Asimov may not want to read further. [...]

Back in June of 2008, we discovered that a new movie was being developed based on the 1844 Alexandre Dumas classic, The Three Musketeers. At the time, not too much was known about the project, and as you can tell, it has been a while since any updates have been offered.

Now, with the title set up and cozy at Warner Brothers, it looks like things are about to set sail. The studio has Producer Lionel Wigram in place, and Peter Straughan has been hired to write the screenplay.

Wigram has done a lot of work with Warner Bros. over the years; he's had a big hand in the success of the Harry Potter franchise, and was a producer on both Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. He was also a writer and producer on Guy Ritchie's new take on Sherlock Holmes, which is crucial because that's exactly where they want to go with this new Three Musketeers adventure. The hopes and plans are to make it fun and exciting to appeal to younger audiences, and to hopefully score another big franchise out of it. [...]

Columbia Pictures is ready to roll the dice on The Da Vinci Code franchise one more time, announcing that it is officially moving forward with The Lost Symbol, which is based on author Dan Brown's book of the same name.

When The Da Vinci Code first came out, it was a mass hit and was everywhere you looked and listened. This popularity obviously carried over when director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks teamed up for the movie adaptation, and though it wasn't as well-received, the movie still made $758 million in its box office run. A sequel was always expected considering there were more books in the series, but for some reason it never felt quite right. Angels & Demons was even less-liked than the original, and it went on to make $486 million -- not a bad take, but surely not up to the hopes of the studio.

Despite the lackluster performance of Angel's & Demons, this news comes as no real shock. [...]

As always, the sad news seems to come all at once. It's being reported that the highly-private legendary author J.D. Salinger has passed away at the age of 91. The cause of death was of natural causes, and indications are that Salinger was healthy until recently when illness took on.

The author was something of an enigma. His classic, The Catcher in the Rye is a book that's so prominent that it feels like it has been around for hundreds of years, even though it was only published in 1951. Over the past few years, just discovering that Salinger was still alive somewhere on this planet felt like some sort of fictional mythology created in his legend, but it was all so true and fascinating to think about.

Salinger himself had a story worthy of books (and a film we're all but guaranteed to see some day). He was born in Manhattan in 1919 to a Jewish cheese salesman father and a half-Scottish, half-Irish Catholic mother. His father wasn't big on his talents as an actor and writer and pressed that he learn business, which saw Salinger head to Austria to work at a meat-importing company. [...]

I've been meaning to post about this for nearly a month now, because it was such a cool find, and luckily, it's not time-sensitive, so here's the deal...

The good folks over at Tor posted I, Cthulhu, author Neil Gaiman's humorous take on Lovecraft, for your reading pleasure.

The short story -- with an actually very lengthy full title I, Cthulhu, or, What’s A Tentacle-Faced Thing Like Me Doing In A Sunken City Like This (Latitude 47° 9' S, Longitude 126° 43' W) -- was published in 1986 and has been posted on the author's blog for quite some time, but Tor has included some new illustrations by Brian Elig to accompany the tale. And I absolutely love these illustrations (especially the inclusion of shoggoth's bowl).

I, Cthulhu is supposed to be H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu dictating its autobiography to the human slave, Whateley. In this story, we learn much about the mysterious Great Old One's ancient origins, including information on its parents. Be sure to pay close attention to the surprise reveal at the end you definitely won't see coming [...]
