DVD Review: The Secret Saturdays Vol. 1-2

Jack Bauerstein83   |

The Secret Saturdays
Volume 1-2
Created by Jay Stephens
Featuring the voices of Phil Morris, Nicole Sullivan, Diedrich Bader, Sam Lerner, Fred Tatasciore, Will Friedle, Corey Burton
Cartoon Network

The Cartoon Network’s The Secret Saturdays is a throwback cartoon that tips their hats off to various cartoons and genres of yesteryear. The cartoon focuses on the Saturday family, a team of crypto-zoologists (or scientists that search for strange creatures), as they go on adventures of exploration and various forms of daring-do. Along the way, they deal with their own rogue gallery of rival crypto-zoologists and various other supped up big baddies.

While I am definitely not the demographic for this cartoon, I must say that I actually enjoyed the cartoon a lot. I am a fan of mythical beasts like Bigfoot or The Loch Ness and I am glad to see an actual cartoon focused on it. The writing and overall tone of the series reminded me a lot of the old Hanna Barbera cartoons, mostly notably Johnny Quest. The creators also throw in a Fantastic Four vibe into the mix and that gels very nicely with the series as a whole (and with yours truly). There is definitely a lot of humor and action that is not family friendly but, I dare say it, adult friendly too [...]

‘Star Trek’ DVD/Blu-ray Retail Exclusives

Empress Eve   |

Star Trek is coming to DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download on November 17, 2009.

Like with many big-name summer blockbusters, Star Trek is getting a few retail exclusive releases at select stores like Target and Best Buy. I don’t usually concern myself too much with different versions of DVDs, unless an exclusive strikes my interest. In this case, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek was my absolute favorite movie of the year (not surprising, since I’m a Trek fanatic), so naturally, I know how to think carefully on which version of the home entertainment release I’ll be choosing.

Check out the list of retail exclusives for the U.S. and Canada here below and feel free to help me decide which I’ll be getting! [...]

DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For

The Movie God   |

Every year, After Dark does their part to bring the world a collection of new horror movies. Their 8 Films to Die For are custom built for the die-hard horror fan, with none of that PG-13 crap — no, no, these are real horror movies that are graphic and completely unapologetic.

Being a big fan of horror movies, I jumped at the opportunity to not only take a look at one of the third annual collection’s offerings, but to swim around in all eight of these demented and twisted tales. My happy dreams may now be permanent nightmares, but really, what fun would it be to just review one part of what’s mean to be an entire collection of pure horror good-ness?

From here on out, I’ll do my best to review each of the eight films so movie fans and horror buffs alike can decide whether they want to see just one or if they want to see them all over and over again. [...]

DVD Review: ‘Friday The 13th’ Parts IV, V & VI Deluxe Editions

The Movie God   |

In case you’ve yet to notice Paramount Home Entertainment has been putting out new Deluxe Editions of the Friday the 13th movies. First they released parts I, II, and III (Read: DVD Reviews: ‘Friday The 13th’ 1-3 Deluxe Editions), and now we have IV, V, and VI!

As I’ve said before: when it comes to Friday the 13th, it’s almost impossible to review them as single movies. Again, the franchise as a whole and the character Jason Voorhees is more of its own life force than a bunch of movies. You either hate Friday the 13th, or you love every cheesy, gory second of it.

With this set of three flicks, we move out of the realms of the less-liked Friday the 13th movies, and into some of the most-popular ones, where Jason transforms from a horrifying and seemingly unstoppable killer, to an undead and definitely unstoppable killer!

Let it begin…again…after it had ended! [...]

J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ Deleted Scene Brings Klingons To The Party

The Movie God   |

Another very cool part of this week’s Scream Awards on Spike TV was a deleted scene from J.J. Abrams‘ new vision of Star Trek that will appear on the movie’s DVD special features.

The scene brings the well-known Trek species known as Klingons into the mix. In the movie, the Klingons were not used and the villainous race were the Romulans and Captain Nero (Eric Bana). The deleted scene shows Nero restrained on a table while a helmed Klingon questions him and threatens to extract the information that he wants by means of a nasty little bug called a Centurion Slug that doesn’t enjoy dark, restricted areas, and will force its way out if need be. (And now we know where Nero got the idea of using said Slug for his interrogations.) Nero then finds the opportune moment and fights off his captors in an attempt to escape.

Click over to check out the deleted scene from Star Trek, which will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download on November 17, 2009 [...]

DVD Review: ‘Battlestar Galactica: The Plan’

The Movie God   |

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
Director: Edward James Olmos
Starring: Dean Stockwell, Rick Worthy, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Edward James Olmos, Michael Trucco, Kate Vernon, Callum Keith Rennie, Aaron Douglas, Michael Hogan, Rekha Sharma, Katee Sackhoff, James Callis
Universal Studios
Release Date: October 27, 2009

I don’t want to be human! I want to see gamma rays. I want to hear x-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a machine, and I could know much more.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is the third prequel movie that has been made within the realms of the brilliant Ronald D. Moore and David Eick re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. The others were Razor and Caprica (which is more of a spinoff and setup for its own new series set to begin in 2010), and they offer us a deeper look into the many stories that we never saw as we journeyed through the wonderful five-season run. While Razor concentrated on another Battlestar ship and added many details to one of the stories we briefly saw in the series, The Plan is a unique and even odd kind of animal that takes us to many different points from the show.

To be completely honest, there’s not really a firm story here, but more of a completely alternative perspective to the intense and familiar events of the series. Do not think that that means that there is no story at all, though — there certainly is, and the more you think about the new things that you see within the film, the more you related them to the overall story, and this is where this movie really works well. The Plan actually plays out almost like the deleted scenes in your DVD special features section, which is kind of strange, but again, unique in its own little way. [...]

Edward James Olmos Severely Raises The Bar For ‘The Plan’ & How We Can See More ‘Battlestar Galactica’

The Movie God   |

Some reports have been making their way around the internet today that actor and director Edward James Olmos has been talking about the possibility of more Battlestar Galactica stories coming if his new prequel movie, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan does really well tomorrow on DVD (stay tuned for our review soon!).

To be fair, if you’ll recall, Olmos appeared on Attack of the Show! back at the beginning of August (Read: Could Big Numbers For ‘The Plan’ Mean More ‘Battlestar Galactica’?) and made this same announcement, so it’s not really news. What is new in all of this, is how many more DVDs he is now saying need to be sold (a LOT more) in order to get more BSG and some information what stories we might be able to see exactly.

While talking to Collider, Olmos upped the number that Universal Studios told him need to be sold from the original 350,000-500,000 he told Attack of the Show! to a whopping 5 Million! You could be assume that this is an overall numerical accomplishment and not just the movie’s release date numbers he first mentioned. There’s no doubt that the fans are faithful enough to pull it off, either, so we can all hope. [...]

‘American Pie Presents: The Book of Love’ Trailer

Empress Eve   |

I absolutely love the American Pie franchise, especially since it stars one of my favorite comedic actors ever, Mr. Eugene Levy.

After the original R-rated trilogy movies were released in theaters, the franchise shifted to the direct-to-DVD market with their American Pie Presents line. Now, coming out on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download on December 22, 2009 is the latest installment, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, available in both Rated and Unrated versions.

CraveOnline has both the standard and uncensored trailers for the film, which sees Levy’s return as the wannabe insightful dad Noah Levenstein, along with a story about three high school virgins who find a “legendary guide to seduction” at their school library. Unfortunately, it’s missing a few pages, which leads the sex-obsessed boys on a crazy journey to lose their virginity and reconstruct this sexual “Bible.”

Apparently, the Book of Love has a bunch of celebrity cameos, like Bret Michaels and one that totally caught my eye — C. Thomas Howell, my first celebrity crush! Now I’m really curious what he’ll be doing in the film.

See below for synopsis, casting, and DVD/Blu-ray details [...]

Last time this baby was on sale it came out to less than twelve bucks each. NOW, for the sale price of $52.99 it would be like paying around $10.60 for each of the five individual seasons of Angel on DVD. That’s an insane bargain! This is definitely the lowest I’ve ever seen this box set go for.

The Geeks Of Doom Guide To Geeky Halloween Costumes

The Movie God   |

We at Geeks of Doom love Halloween. The smell in the air, the leaves changing color to mark the occasion, and all of the old edited horror movies playing over and over on your TV make it one of the most entertaining and exciting times of year.

Back in 2006, we compiled a list of some of the best geek costumes on the market for those of you who do not yet have an idea as to what you want to be. It’s already been three years now, so we thought it was about time to compile another epic list of costume options for the undecided (which includes myself).

While checking these costumes out, keep some things in mind — most importantly: pretty much every costume that you see will have multiple styles of varying price and quality. The majority of the ones we have here are in the $30-$50 range, but you can find really high-quality “Deluxe” versions of the costume that will run you in the $100-$200 dollar range. These are for the folks who have money to spare and love authenticity. If you’re out of your freakin’ mind, there’s even Batman and Darth Vader costumes that will run you $700+ dollars. If you don’t like the one we’ve linked to, just search the character and check out all of the others that exist. Most costumes have children’s versions available, too. We’ve included some great kids’ costumes, but if you find an adult one you’d like for the little ones, just search it out! [...]

DVD Review: Robot Chicken: Star Wars – Episode II

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Robot Chicken: Star Wars – Episode II
Directed by Seth Green
Featuring the voices of Seth Green, Billy Dee Williams, Donald Faison, Carrie Fisher
Adult Swim

Some things in life just go really well together. Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Chocolate Chip and Mints are just some of the prime examples, but now you can add Robot Chicken and Star Wars into the mix as well. When the popular stop-motion series Robot Chicken decided to parody the mega popular Star Wars franchise the first time around, the reviews for the show was overwhelmingly positive. Even George Lucas approved so you can only imagine that it wouldn’t be long until the sequel Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II showed up.

Nothing has changed much since the first special. The folks at Robot Chicken, led by bite-sized star Seth Green, are still offering up their hilarious and often times, insane, fanboy interpretations of key moments in the Star Wars franchise. Ever wonder what happens to Boba Fett moments after he meets his fate in Return of the Jedi or what was going through the mind of Luke during his key battle with Darth Vader? All those questions are answered and even some random ‘what if’ scenarios are touched on in this funny special [...]

Geekgasm: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Babes Grace Cover of Maxim

Empress Eve   |

Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer has posed for PETA and bared all for Playboy. Now, Helfer is baring some more, along with her BSG co-star Grace Park, for the November issue of Maxim magazine.

The lovely ladies, both of whom made their mark playing sexy, yet deadly human-looking Cylons on the hit SCI FI Channel series, star in Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the upcoming BSG prequel movie due out October 27, 2009 on DVD and Blu-ray. The uncensored 90-minute feature will combine previously aired scenes from the series, which ran four seasons, with new footage which will show the events of the series from the Cylons’ point of view.

And as far as that Maxim cover goes — wow. As I mentioned, the DVD version of The Plan is an uncensored DVD, which I assumed meant strong language and heavy action. In the Maxim issue, which hits newstands on October 20, Helfer confirms that there will be more “explicit action” and talks about how she refuses to use a body double. “You will see a little bit of skin from me as the Six character,” Helfer said, adding that there will also be “a new character you’ll see in some very intense sex scenes.”

Park goes further to say, “Yeah, there’s going to be a T & A version. Though maybe I should say T, C & A, because it’s not just girls this time…” Whoa!!!

Check out some more photos we were sent from the Maxim photoshoot here [...]

A new video has been posted online of the Gag Reel from the upcoming two-disc Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray release of 2009’s Star Trek.

JJ AbramsStar Trek film was my ultimate favorite movie of this year, so I really got a kick out of this gag reel, which shows the cast flubbing lines, goofing around, and dancing (yes, lots of dancing). There’s also parts of the deleted scenes.
