Created by Kurt Sutter
Starring Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Maggie Siff and Ron Perlman
Now airing on FX

SPOILERS: This is not to be read until after you've seen the 10/28 episode. But if you haven’t watched this show, I have to ask what the hell you’re doing here?

The story so far…

The Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club-Redwood Original (or SAMCRO) rules over the town of Charming, California with a hard but benevolent fist, keeping huge corporate development out of the town, gaining even the respect of the town sheriff. They finance their activities by running guns. Naturally, this runs afoul of the ATF.

The ATF troubles loom behind them (particularly Agent Stahl, played by Ally Walker), but now they’re caught up with the threat that white separatist Ethan Zobelle (Adam Arkin) and his crew pose [...]

30 Rock
Season 4 Premiere
Starring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan
NBC, Thursdays at 9:30pm

Last season, I tuned into the 30 Rock premiere with high expectations, only to be met by the awkward-and-not-in-a-good-way SeinfeldVision. After a consistently hilarious second season, everything in SeinfeldVision felt off, as if the writers had suddenly changed focus. The episode proved to be the harbinger of a disappointing season that, while still occasionally brilliant, relied far too heavily on big-name guest stars while letting its strong supporting cast fall to the wayside.

Fortunately, this season's premiere -- the cutely named Season 4 -- was a happier beginning. We got a good amount of time with all of the secondary characters, including the oft-forgotten Josh, as well as all the clever one-liners we could possibly expect from a half-hour of comedy (my favorite: Pete's "Another actor? Why? They have so many feelings and opinions!" Okay, it's in Scott Adsit's delivery. It's not as funny written down). Plus, Steve Buscemi! It had its flaws, however. The theme of the episode -- drawing in more mainstream viewers -- may be a bit too on-the-nose for some, considering 30 Rock's notoriously low ratings. And it wasn't a standout episode for any of the main cast, Kenneth in particular. But I'll get to that later [...]

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Season 5, EP 1-4
Starring Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, Danny DeVito
FX Network

On the eve of the fifth season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I am sitting here wondering how this show can still be on the air. I am not talking about the blatant irreverence. The question comes more from the curiosity behind how a show like this can survive as long as it has without becoming monotonous and boring. At its heart it is the very definition of a one-trick pony.

If you tried to tell someone who hasn’t seen the show what it was about, it wouldn’t sound like much. It’s a group of underachievers who run a dive bar in south Philly who try to scheme their way into their vision of success. What they are trying to succeed at differs with each episode but it usually comes from a part of their brain that is poorly lit and with little thought of consequence. The truth is they are unsuccessful at just about everything they are involved in, business, relationships, sobriety; pretty much life in general. The only people that seem oblivious to their limitations are each other. You can gussy it up all you want, but at its core that is pretty much what you have. They don’t tell jokes, they don’t have extravagant thematic elements or running storylines, it just is what it is. We are four years into the sport of watching these characters flail around their little fishbowl and there is only one reason anyone in their right mind would still watch it -- it’s still funny [...]

Season 2 premiere date: Tuesday, September 8, 10 EST/9 CST on FX

The handiest and dandiest nutshell in which to describe the FX show Sons of Anarchy is “Hamlet with Bikers.” It’s not the least accurate metaphor in the world: You have a Claudius, you have a Gertrude, and even the hero of the show, Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), has blond hair and blue eyes, looking as Danish as Danish can be. Hamlet with Bikers isn’t the worst kind of thing for a show. There are a whole ton of shows that don’t have Shakespearean allusions or dirty, smelly bikers, so can’t we have one that does?

But the more cynical way to describe Sons of Anarchy is “The Sopranos with Bikers,” but it’s too early to call on that one. The show needs six more seasons to overextend itself and a ton of out-of-place dream sequences to live up to that. That show got so bored with itself that it ended in mid-sentence to go and do something else.

Sons of Anarchy is the latest, and arguably best, drama to come out of the basic cable network FX, beating out other shows like Rescue Me, Damages, and the recently concluded The Shield (which is that show poor people had to make do with when they couldn’t get The Wire on HBO). In fact, I would go so far as to call Sons of Anarchy last season’s best new show in all of television. It took a little while to get its groove on, but it veered quite close to great in its second half. That’s something even the best shows on TV rarely do [...]

Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire
Comedy Central

If only Comedy Central knew how to spend their money a little better. Every time the network I so dearly love scores a hit and is suddenly flush with revenue, they race out and greenlight a few more new series that often prove to look better on paper than on the high-definition television screen (remember The Naked Trucker and T-Bone?). Their newest effort, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, is no ill-advised exception. A vain attempt to satirize the beloved sword-and-sorcery genre much like Monty Python and the Holy Grail took on the legend of King Arthur and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the books and the BBC radio and television adaptations I mean of course; the 2005 movie blew chunks that not even Amy Winehouse could top) turned a jaundiced eye on science fiction, Krod is a noble effort that misses a great deal more than it hits. For a fan of great epics such as Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy that celebrate the awesome beauty of worlds where magic and clashing steel are as commonplace as traffic and acid reflux are here, watching this show is like watching a mediocre stand-up comedian: you may chuckle occasionally, and you may be shocked when you do, but don't expect any big laughs.

As a narrator ominously (as best he can) intones, Krod Mandoon (Sean Maguire of the oh so delightful Meet the Spartans), the "son of a blacksmith and a stay at home mom," leads a small band of heroic warriors on a quest to free the great General Arcadius (Roger Allam), leader of the People's Resistance, from the clutches of the evil, eccentric, and somewhat effeminate Chancellor Dongalor (Matt Lucas) [...]

I won’t say that I’m the biggest Doctor Who fan in the world, but I have watched all of the last four series that have been released in the U.S., and I’ve really enjoyed them. If you get a chance to watch them or rent the DVDs, I highly recommend them. (Why not buy them? More on that later.) So, of course I was interested in checking out the second series of the spin-off, Torchwood. Of course, one problem is that I haven’t seen all of the first series, but that still didn’t stop me from enjoying this collection of episodes. I knew enough about the characters, specifically main character Jack Harkness, and the creators did a good job of bringing me up to speed, so I didn’t feel lost for having not seen series one. Is it as good as the show it’s spun off from? Let’s find out.

The best way to describe Torchwood is too call it the X-Files without all the mystery. The basic plot is that there is a British government agency whose job it is to track down aliens and other mysterious creatures and use their technology for the betterment of mankind. Torchwood 3, located in Wales, is lead by the immortal Captain Jack Harkness, and over the course of these thirteen episodes, the team deals with alien invasions, time traveling World War I vets, evil meat companies, evil pharmaceutical companies, evil shape shifters, evil carnies, and evil brothers [...]

After 88 episodes of groundbreaking, gritty television, The Shield is finally over. It was a crown masterwork of police procedural drama, utilizing such creative storytelling that viewers should feel blessed simply to have witnessed its unfolding. But if there’s been one flaw with this show, it’s that it’s always been just a little bit too in love with its main characters. Time and time again, we’ve seen Vic and his Strike Team worm their way out of every single legal conundrum and gang-related bear trap that has been thrown their way. This crew has done some pretty sick, twisted stuff over the past few years, and they had much to atone for leading into the finale. Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan had plenty of opportunities to send some of these characters to jail or to kill them off, but he always seemed reluctant to do so. Not that we ever really wanted him to: It seems a warmed over observation, but part of the brilliance of The Shield was making you root for every single one of these characters. With season 7 being the show’s last, Ryan had nothing to lose anymore; he could deal with the characters and bring their arcs to a conclusion in whatever way he wanted to. The question after all these years of torture, corruption, and murder is, would Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) walk away? Or would he finally get caught?

With just one 90-minute-long episode left, I desperately wanted there to be a reckoning, some final closure for all the injustice that has been doled out, or at least some closure. To a huge extent, this series finale thoroughly delivered.

[WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL EPISODE OF THE SHIELD].

There are many thing I love on good episodic TV. I love it when brings two love interests together, only to rip them apart in necessary fashion. I love how out of nowhere a character dies suddenly making you realize just how important this person was to the show but most of all. I love it when a good show finally goes and heads in the direction of a great show. This is exactly the case with this next set of episodes of FX Network's Sons of Anarchy.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of the inner workings of a biker gang with a iron grip over a small California town named Charming. The gang is led by Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and his step-son Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam), who has a crisis of faith after his son is born. He is unsure of the path his life is headed in and those sentiments are cemented once he discovers his father's lost journals. Turns out, when Jax's father created Sons, he had whole different purpose for the gang. So as Jax fights the demons within, he leads the Sons in battles against rival gangs, local and federal law enforcement, and even those within his club [...]

For the first five minutes or so, Testees seems full of a Judd Apatow-esque kind of potential. Main characters Ron (Steve Markle) and Peter (Jeff Kassel) are goofy-looking everymen living in an apartment together with no money and less class. The two exchange awkward banter that's a bit crass but also strangely endearing. Most importantly, it gets the point across: This duo of bemused slackers needs cash fast. There's even an Office-style opening.

And with that we're off into the main premise of the show and what FX hopes will keep viewers tuning in. As it turns out, Ron and Peter have just quit a job a Testico, a local facility that tests out new drugs and products on willing human lab rats. The probable structure of each episode is clear from the outset: Ron and Peter head to the lab and get a suppository -- complete with an unnecessarily lengthy robot rape gag in this debut -- then the two wait for unexpected but hilarious side effects to ensue. It's a concept that lends itself more to gross-out scenes and fart jokes than dialogue-based comedy, so it's no surprise that as soon as the two enter Testico, whatever charming humor they had is immediately thrown out the window [...]

When I watched the first five episodes of Sons of Anarchy, I was a torn on whether on not to stick around. On one hand, there was plenty of untapped potential and decent acting for the FX series but on the other hand, the show really did not have much to offer. The storyline had this feeling of been there, done that but this has not stopped audiences from tuning in. The series has just been picked up for a second season. Thanks to the wonderful folks at FX, I was given the opportunity to find out with a preview DVD of last week’s episodes along with two upcoming episodes.

For those unaware, Sons of Anarchy revolves around life in a motorcycle gang of the same name. Set in fictional California town Charming, the gang is led by Clay Marrow (Ron Perlman) and his step-son/Vice President of Sons, Jackson Teller (Charlie Hunnam). When Jackson finds his father’s old journals in storage, he discovers that his father’s original concept of Sons as a peaceful organization does not match up with the current incarnation Clay runs, which is knee deep in guns, drugs, and violence [...]

When The Shield finishes up its final season in 2009, FX will have some mighty big shoes to fill in its lineup. As the hit series is winding down and their other top hit shows pushed back into 2009, FX hopes the new series, Sons of Anarchy, will catch fire and some viewers in the process.

The series, created by one of the writers of The Shield, revolves around the day-to-day lives of a motorcycle gang in a fictional town in California called Charming. Known as the Sons of Anarchy, the gang has their hands in everything, whether it is gun running to various other gangs in the area or organizing a town fund-raiser. The gang is led by Clay Morrow, president of Sons, and Jax Teller, son of the original founder of Sons of Anarchy. Jax’s life enters a crossroad when his pregnant, drugged up ex-wife is sent to the hospital after an overdose on Crank. With his son born premature, Jax does what he can to not think about the situation and along the way, comes across his father’s old journals. The journals highlight his father’s original vision for the biker gang, a vision that does not line up to its current incarnation [...]

As many of the episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as I have seen, and as many of them as I have reviewed for this site, I have always enjoyed them with bated breath. They are generally pretty funny in their own right but I can’t help that little whispering voice in the back of my head warning me that the other shoe is bound to drop. For a show with no real direction that can be described as controlled chaos at best, I have complained in previous reviews that the show was beginning to rely too much on a shock and awe approach rather than creating their own mythology that could carry the show through weaker episodes. I went back and watched a handful of old episodes on DVD before I previewed the first two episodes of season four: ‘Mac & Dennis: Manhunters’ and ‘The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis’. What I found out was that in their avoidance of being stuck with a label, they have created that mythology by default. They have taken Seinfeld’s mantra -- “Nobody learns, nobody hugs” -- to unforeseen heights [...]

Really, those five of you that have never heard of Matt Stone or Trey Parker and the universe of South Park can just either stop reading right now or, as Cartman says, “RESPEC’ MY AUTHORATAAAA!"

The recently released South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season holds another 14 episodes of manic and uncensored hijinks from the infamous clan of Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they continue to boldly go where nobody really should in grade 4.

The Season Eleven DVD of the Comedy Central series includes the three-episode "Imaginationland" arc, which was released separately on DVD earlier this year.

“Special features are bad, mmmkay?”

As anyone with any previous seasons experience will tell you, they are a long way from special. Only Stone and Parker’s commentary at the beginning of each show gives us any insight into how this brilliant abomination of 2D animation comes to life and how intense it must be to be on the staff…

In this two-part mini-series, an elderly Caucasian monk named White Crane (David Carradine) returns to his monastery after wandering the world for two decades to spend the rest of his days. But soon after he returns, an army battalion under the rule of criminal mastermind Khan sweeps into the monastery and systematically wipe out most of monks. White Crane vows to take revenge and soon finds himself in Shanghai, where he actually becomes the bodyguard of Khan in order to get close to him, and learns of Khan's plan in creating a gas that will kill countless thousands.

White Crane also meets up with Jane (Darryl Hannah), a singer from Brooklyn who is now the main attraction at a local bar, and whose brother coincidentally is the scientist who is being forced to work on Khan's death gas.
FX Network; Premiere: September 2, 2008, 10PM SPOILER WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE SHIELD: SEASON 6 AND MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST FEW EPISODES OF THE SHIELD: SEASON 7.

It’s been over a year since we’ve seen a new episode of The Shield and, for me, it’s like waiting for an older brother to come home from a brief stint in juvie: Although deep down you know he’s a bad influence and you probably shouldn’t hang out with him, you giddily can’t wait for his return. When we last left Vic Mackey, he had seized Cruz Pezuela’s blackmail box full of material that could compromise every city official in LA. Pezuela was about to use the box as leverage to buy massive portions of Farmington uncontested. Vic was determined to take him down, but with only days left on the job, how would he complete the task?

Unlike 24, where years can transpire between seasons, The Shield has always tried to give us a continuous storyline, regardless of how much time has taken place in real life. Season 7 continues that trend, as the opening scene occurs only hours after last season’s finale. In the season premiere alone, a woman is bound up and gagged as bait for a cop, Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) painfully tortures a criminal for information, and someone is murdered in cold blood. The Shield is back, baby...
