DVD Review: ‘Supernatural’ Season 3
In the third season of The CW’s Supernatural, one of the show’s sibling protagonists is in trouble: to quote the packaging itself, “the Doomsday Clock is ticking for Dean.” There’s a certain allegorical value to this statement: the show has always been quite soundly on the bubble with the network in terms of its potential cancellation, facing stiff competition in its timeslot, and potentially performing below expectations.
But, judging by the quality of the show’s third season, and the fan support given the series over the past year, it is clear that the Doomsday Clock is not ticking for Supernatural. Despite some roadblocks involving the introduction of new characters (always a difficult role for a series heading beyond its first few years), this strike-shortened season demonstrates the show’s central strength: two brothers, their fates intertwined, protecting humans from all things demonic and ghoulish.
And as long as Supernatural delivers on this promise, chances are that the Doomsday Clock will stay silent […]

DVD Review: ‘South Park’ The Complete Eleventh Season Uncensored
 |
Posted by Groovespook | September 16th, 2008 at 8:47 am |
Really, those five of you that have never heard of Matt Stone or Trey Parker and the universe of South Park can just either stop reading right now or, as Cartman says, “RESPEC’ MY AUTHORATAAAA!”
The recently released South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season holds another 14 episodes of manic and uncensored hijinks from the infamous clan of Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they continue to boldly go where nobody really should in grade 4.
The Season Eleven DVD of the Comedy Central series includes the three-episode “Imaginationland” arc, which was released separately on DVD earlier this year.
“Special features are bad, mmmkay?”
As anyone with any previous seasons experience will tell you, they are a long way from special. Only Stone and Parker’s commentary at the beginning of each show gives us any insight into how this brilliant abomination of 2D animation comes to life and how intense it must be to be on the staff…

Major Davis Returns to ‘Stargate’
 |
Posted by MajorJJH | September 14th, 2008 at 4:28 pm |
This is the epitome of what we call cult reporting. I know that most of you do not give a rat’s ass for this news, but for some of us, this is really kind of exciting.
For anyone who has spent any amount of time watching Stargate, you will probably have come across the character Major Davis. A liaison from the Pentagon, the character was portrayed by Colin Cunningham, and became a very popular character, despite being nothing more than a recurring guest star.
However, according to GateWorld, Cunningham will be returning to the Stargate franchise for the series finale of Stargate Atlantis, which is scheduled to air in January 2009.
The episode, entitled “Enemy at the Gate,” is shrouded in mystery, not surprising, but will cap off 5 seasons worth of Atlantis and bridge the way for the recently announced movie…

DVD Review: ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Season 3
After a 7-episode first season and a 10-episode second season, the question hanging over the young actors of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was whether or not they could make the magic happen again for a whole 15-episode third season? Fortunately for fans of TV comedy, the answer is a resounding “Yes.”
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia chronicles the adventures of four amoral young adult misfits, Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Charlie (Charlie Day), and Mac (Rob McElhenney), as well as Dennis and Dee’s deadbeat father Frank (Danny Devito). Together they try and run a bar, Paddy’s Pub, although the business serves only as a setting for the various amounts of legal and ethical troubles they get into. Most episodes begin with one of the characters coming up with some plan for self-improvement or self-betterment (e.g., Mac and Dennis want to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles) and end with that plan going horrifically wrong (e.g., Mac and Dennis fail at tryouts, Dee ends up with her ankle shattered, and Frank accidentally shoots a player in the leg)…

DVD Review: The Blue Planet: Seas of Life
 |
Posted by Bad Monkey | September 8th, 2008 at 4:36 pm |
Years ago when I was lucky enough to be vacationing in Maui, a friend and I got tired of laying on the beach and decided to take SCUBA diving lessons. It was a lot of fun, we learned a loads, and both of us came to the same conclusion at the end of the week: “There’s a lot of freaky stuff down there.” This was an epic understatement. The measly 40-feet we got to dive in was a tiny sampling of the fascinating world that occupies 3/4 of the earth’s surface. This was made abundantly clear when I watched BBC’s The Blue Planet: Seas of Life DVD Collector’s Set.
Narrated by the incomparable David Attenborough, this documentary explores all aspects of marine life over the course of eight episodes on four DVDs… “Ocean World,” “Frozen Seas,” “Open Ocean,” “The Deep,” “Seasonal Seas,” “Coral Seas,” “Tidal Seas,” and “Coasts.” There’s also a fifth DVD with four bonus featurettes that loosely tie into the series…

‘Twilight’ Stars Get Cut Off At The MTV VMAs [w/Video]
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | September 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
I suffered through teh MTV VIdeo Music Awards not to hear the music (oh lord, no), but to see the presenters. As I Tweeted earlier, the VMAs would be a pretty cool show if only there was no music.
Anyhow, an hour into the show, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Cam Gigandet, and Taylor Lautner, stars of Summit Entertainment’s highly anticipated Twilight, came out to introduce the live performance for best rock nominee Paramore…

Dragon*Con 08: Adult Swim Unveils Upcoming Programs [w/Video]
 |
Posted by TechGOnzo | September 6th, 2008 at 2:53 pm |
At some point during the 22 years Dragon*Con has been in existence, scheduling a panel discussion specifically about Dragons was a main concern for the convention event planner. Yet, lately, they’ve sort of been lacking on the whole “lets talk about dragons for the sake of talking about dragons” area. It seems odd at first to have no such panel about dragons, because the convention has dragon in its name. Then again, there are SO many more cool things to talk about in the present day. Right?
Wrong.
Obviously, you must not have attended Adult Swim’s Dragon panel about Dragons, [adult swim], culture [adult swim], and golf.
Dana Snyder, (voice of Aqua Teen’s Master Shake, Granny Squid Ruby Jean, and Todd from Codemonkeys) addressed a legion of fanboys and fangirls in dragon-costumed attire — as were other members of the Adult Swim Network for the panel, which was moderated by producer Keith Crofford.
Laughs were had, threats were made, and handicap-lowering tips were shared.
Previews for the next 9-months of ALL-NEW programing were also shown…

Dragon*Con 08: ‘BSG’ Cast Discusses Post-Battlestar Work
 |
Posted by TechGOnzo | September 5th, 2008 at 9:32 pm |
At a panel at Dragon*Con 08, some of the Battlestar Galactica cast members talked about their post-BSG projects.
James Callis, who plays Baltar on the show, told fans that he had signed on to do the BBC television program, Merlin, in which he would be playing the title role. (However, PorgGrrl pointed out that no official announcement had been made about his involvement.)
Richard Hatch will direct Ghost Frequency, a film from his new production company. The actor, who also starred on the original 1970s version of BSG, also has plans to start a new network for the Sci-Fi community. (The man stuck it out for BSG because he believed in it — tend to think he’ll bring the same tenacity to this endeavor.)
Aaron Douglas will play cop Frank Leo in The Bridge, a Movie of the Week for CTV, which could get picked up as a regular series…

DVD Review: ‘Dexter’ Season 2
Dexter is a show that works beyond all the expected ways it could be anticipated to work. The first season involved Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall, a serial killer who works forensics on the Miami Police Department. His targets are criminals and people who use the normal parameters of the law to their own ends instead of justice. In an unfair world, Dexter acts as an equalizer.
But, more than that, it’s about a man, admittedly dead to the world, fumbling and futzing his way towards humanity and a soul. For someone like Dexter, who freely admits that he has no emotions, he sure does develop a lot of attachments. To his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) and her two kids; To his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), who’s also a cop and has no luck with romance. Through his interactions with others he finds out, much to both his joy and dismay, that he was human all along. Kind of like The Wizard of Oz in Dante’s ring of murderers.
And this was all in the first season. Here we are with the second season, now on DVD, and I think it’s better than the first. Instead of trying to capture lightning in a bottle yet again, it’s a continuation of the central themes and a continuing evolution of Dexter as a character.
Yeah, so he has a soul. NOW what?…

Dragon*Con 08: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ TV Movie Details
 |
Posted by TechGOnzo | September 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm |
The Battlestar Galactica cast is scheduled to begin shooting September 8, 2008 the second TV movie that will first air on the SCI FI Channel and then immediately be released to DVD.
The 2-hour movie will act as an extended episode and is set in the “Lay Your Burdens Down” time period, according to Michael Hogan, who plays Colonel Saul Tigh on BSG.
In the Saturday panel at Dragon*Con 2008, Edward James Olmos said the story would address what happened between his character Bill Adama and Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) on New Caprica. The DVD movie, Olmos said, “is about how Adama gets laid.”
Olmos will also assume directing duties for the as-of-yet untitled TV movie…

Doom Deliveries: Classified ‘Fringe’ Materials
 |
Posted by Empress Eve | September 2nd, 2008 at 11:45 am |
The Fall television series is finally upon is, so for the last two or so weeks, I’ve been getting loads of preview material for upcoming shows.
I’ll admit, while I love television I have a major commitment problem. I’ll DVR some stuff, then never get around to watching it; then when it comes on DVD, I’ll feel like it’s too much pressure to bang out a whole season at once. I’m working on these issues, but in the meantime, each season I will try to catch a new series right from the beginning and then watch it in “real time” — this happened for me with NBC’s The Office, SCI FI’s Battlestar Galactica, and NBC’s Heroes. For the 2008 Fall season, the new Fox series Fringe, created by JJ Abrams, is definitely my “real time” show of this season.
I didn’t know too much about Fringe until the other day when a large box and poster tube arrived from Fox’s publicity department. In it were Fringe promo items — lenticular notepad, backpack, t-shirt, poster, and the limited edition 2008 Comic Con comic book — and an envelope from the FBI marked “CONFIDENTIAL.”
Time to get viral! …

Dragon*Con 08: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Final Episodes May Be Delayed Til April 2009
 |
Posted by TechGOnzo | September 1st, 2008 at 7:09 pm |
The final episodes of Season Four of Battlestar Galactica may air as late as April 2009, according to the show’s star Aaron Douglas at a cast panel discussion Sunday at Dragon*Con 2008.
Douglas, who plays Chief Tyrol, said that the SCI FI network has completely ignored arguably their biggest hit, adding “and the SCI FI Network sucks,” which got a big applause from those in the audience.
“Ten episodes is not a season,” said Douglas, referring to the first half of the season, which aired from April to June 2008. In June 2008, the remaining episodes, which will conclude the storyline for the series, had not yet been scheduled…

Contest: ‘The Shield’ Prize Pack
Season 7 of the FX series The Shield premieres this Tuesday, September 2 at 10pm, and in conjunction with this event, Geeks of Doom is giving away one (1) Shield prize pack, that includes a Season 6 DVD and Season 7 poster.
Groundbreaking, critically acclaimed, award winning, consistent, and historic are the most precise words to describe FX’s signature original drama series The Shield.
Since its debut on March 12, 2002, The Shield has set a standard for excellence and redefined basic cable television. Not only did The Shield establish the foundation for what FX has become, but it also paved the way for other ad-supported cable networks to follow its lead to strive for the highest quality scripted drama series. It opened a world of possibility for writers, producers, actors and directors, providing them the new chance to come to basic cable and deliver original scripted series of the highest caliber.
The seventh and final season begins on Tuesday, September 2 at 10 PM ET/PT with new episodes every Tuesday at 10 PM ET/PT though November 25…

TV Preview: ‘The Shield’ Season 7
FX Network; Premiere: September 2, 2008, 10PM SPOILER WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE SHIELD: SEASON 6 AND MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST FEW EPISODES OF THE SHIELD: SEASON 7.
It’s been over a year since we’ve seen a new episode of The Shield and, for me, it’s like waiting for an older brother to come home from a brief stint in juvie: Although deep down you know he’s a bad influence and you probably shouldn’t hang out with him, you giddily can’t wait for his return. When we last left Vic Mackey, he had seized Cruz Pezuela’s blackmail box full of material that could compromise every city official in LA. Pezuela was about to use the box as leverage to buy massive portions of Farmington uncontested. Vic was determined to take him down, but with only days left on the job, how would he complete the task?
Unlike 24, where years can transpire between seasons, The Shield has always tried to give us a continuous storyline, regardless of how much time has taken place in real life. Season 7 continues that trend, as the opening scene occurs only hours after last season’s finale. In the season premiere alone, a woman is bound up and gagged as bait for a cop, Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) painfully tortures a criminal for information, and someone is murdered in cold blood. The Shield is back, baby…

HBO Kills ‘Preacher’
Back in November 2006, it was announced that the super-violent comic called Preacher would be turned into a one-hours series on HBO. This was exciting to fans of the Garth Ennis comic book series as it promised all the necessary violence and a whole lot more than two hours of content a movie adaptation would have provided.
Now, those dreams have been slaughtered as Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider), who was trying to get the project going, has told Comics Continuum that the new head of HBO decided he didn’t like it.
We were budgeting and everything and it was getting really close to going, but the new head of HBO felt it was just too dark and too violent and too controversial. Which, of course, is kind of the point!
HBO also offered Johnson the chance to re-do everything and try and tone it down, but he decided to just pass on it all together…

Video: Promo for the ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Animated Series That Never Was
 |
Posted by MajorJJH | August 26th, 2008 at 9:40 pm |
It comes as a total shock to me to find out that there is a 3 1/2-minute pilot on YouTube of an animated Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show.
It comes as a further shock that I have not thought of this in my dreams. It is a natural progression, considering the fact that there has been the movie, TV series, comics, and more. And the worst shock of all is that the series was apparently turned down by every TV studio that Joss Whedon and co-creator Jeph Loeb took it too.
However, since it has been leaked to YouTube, there is an online petition (that you have to sign up to sign) that, as of writing this, stands at just 1,184 signatures. But given the popularity of Buffy, especially among the internet community, this is sure to climb.
Watch it here while it lasts…

More ‘Red Dwarf’ On The Way?
I’ve never seen an episode of Red Dwarf. I don’t even really have a clue what it is, aside from that it’s British and kinda weird looking. But I have a friend who loves it very dearly and it’s pretty popular, so I figured it’s worth sharing this news.
Red Dwarf cast member Robert Llewellyn made an announcement at the KTCS9 20th Anniversary shindig that a new one-hour special has been commissioned by the BBC Worldwide.
No word on the storyline, but the script is in its final stages.
The project should start filming in October 2008…

‘Stargate’ Down, then Back Up Again
 |
Posted by MajorJJH | August 25th, 2008 at 10:46 am |
No, I’m not referring to some technical glitch, but simply the past few days in the Stargate universe (wait for the pun). Last Thursday, we reported (on my birthday of all days!) that Stargate Atlantis had been canceled. SCI FI Channel also announced that they would be making a tele-movie, but still, one of my favorite series was canceled.
One of the benefits of that though, was the opening for Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis to begin work on the third Stargate series.
And it was announced late last week, that SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment had reached an agreement to begin production on Stargate Universe (pun achieved!).
“SCI FI has enjoyed tremendous success with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and we’re proud to be the home of the new Stargate Universe,” said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions…
