Goonies, which had a screenplay by Chris Columbus with a story by Steven Spielberg, followed a group of kids trying to save a part of town called the “Goon Docks” from demolition. They head off on an adventure to find the buried treasure of a legendary pirate named One-Eyed Willie and it’s on this quest that the “Goonies” are introduced to a gentle giant named Sloth.
Goonies: The Search for Sloth picks up several years after the end of the movie. While some of the “Goonies” are in high school and others are in college, they are no longer working as a group. When one of the old gang finds out that Sloth has gone missing under suspicious circumstances, the “Goonies” reform to save the giant.
The sequel comic book is tentatively scheduled for a late summer launch.
Donner recently told EW that a movie sequel is unlikely, but that he’s discussed with Spielberg the prospect of adapting the original movie into a musical.
