Schlock trailers of yesteryear’s movies have become something of a fad within the horror community as of late. Synapse Films has released several DVDs under the 42nd Street Forever moniker. Cheezy Flicks have several themed DVD releases dedicated to a specific genre. Earlier this year Grindhouse tried to revamp the style with several fake trailers spread throughout the double feature, and Eli Roth has gone as far as to say he’d like to make an entire movie of just fake trailers.
Now, a new upstart Web site, Trailers From Hell has set out to shine a light on some of the unbelievable, but very real and quite fantastic trailers from the days gone by. Here you’ll be able to see how films were promoted before “movie guy” had a vice-like grip on voiceovers. And as a very cool added bonus, Trailers From Hell has brought in famed directors to give an optional audio commentary while you are watching the trailers, filled with informative tidbits.
Currently you can hear Joe Dante (who co-created the Web site) on The Terror and The Unearthly, Edgar Wright on Danger Diabolik, Mick Garris on House on Haunted Hill, and John Landis on The T.A.M.I. Show. Each director bookends their respective trailer with an infectious little intro and outro that’ll have you seeking out the films they talk about.
The site has several upcoming trailers in the works as well, with all four directors above returning for another round, and Mary Lambert will join the fun with commentary on the original Village of the Damned. Each trailer is available with HTML to embed right into your blog as well.
