Sean Penn and Iggy Pop will lend their voices to the North American version of Sony Pictures Classics’ French animated political drama Persepolis, according to THR.
The film is based on Persepolis and Persepolis 2, the autobiographical graphic novels by Iranian author Marjane Satrapi, who co-wrote and co-directed the film with Vincent Paronnaud.
Persepolis chronicles the struggles of young Marjane, beginning with her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution at a time where women are forced to wear veils and people are living in fear of government persecution.
The outspoken young girl discovers music — particularly punk rock, ABBA, and Iron Maiden — and eventually must decide whether to stay in her tyrannical war-torn homeland or start a new life for herself in Europe.
See image at right of Marjane rockin’ out with an Iron Maiden poster on her wall (awesome!!!).
Penn will voice Marjane’s father, Pop her activist uncle, and Gena Rowland her grandmother. Catherine Deneuve, who voiced Marjane’s mother in the French film, will reprise her role for the English version.
The English-language version of Persepolis is tentatively scheduled for a domestic theatrical release at the end of 2007.
