Spider-Man‘s Tobey Maguire will produce Afterburn, the planned film adaptation of the Red 5 comic book series.
Ryan Kavanaugh‘s Relativity Media has the rights to the film, which is also being produce by Neal Moritz‘s Original Films.
No writer has signed on yet for the adaptation of the four-issue post-Apocalyptic comic book series by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood. In the story, which takes place a year after half the Earth has been devastated by a massive sun-flare, an elite team of treasure hunters scavenges through the remains to retrieve valuable artifacts while facing rival treasure hunters as well as mutants, zombie sharks, and other dangers.
In the Geeks of Doom review of issue #1, which debuted January 23, 2008, GoD’s NeverWanderer said, “Reading this book is like watching the most fast-paced post-apocalyptic horror action-adventure movie ever to hit the big screen. It’s like Escape From New York, Waterworld, and Dawn of the Dead all tossed in a blender and cranked up to eleven.”
No wonder the series, which is still on-going, was picked up for adaptation so fast — it seems prime for the big screen.
