I will not ever see this movie, but I already owe Kung Fu Panda a debt of gratitude for kicking Sex and the City out of top position for this weekend’s box office takings. Amassing a respectable $60 million, Kung Fu Panda, the latest animated feature from DreamWorks, has done rather well for itself on a non-holiday-weekend.
Starring a veritable bounty of stars, including Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, and Jackie Chan, Kung Fu Panda tells the story of Po the Panda, the laziest of animals in all of the Valley of Peace, who unwittingly becomes the chosen one when an old enemy threaten their way of life.
Coming in second is the Adam Sandler comedy, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, out of Sony Entertainment, which managed $40 million in its opening weekend.
More interesting are the holders of spots number 3, 4, 6, and 7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull managed to beat out Sex and the City for the third spot, taking in $22.8 million, while SATC is estimated to have taken $21.3 million. Jumping over The Strangers we see that Iron Man and Prince Caspian are still hanging in as well.
This weekend was never going to be a rip-snorter, but with The Incredible Hulk opening next weekend, it should be a different matter to see how well the next geek movie does.
