Mark Millar’s Proposed ‘Superman’ Trilogy

SupermanIn the wake of the disappointment of Superman Returns, Warner Bros. has had to rethink its Superman franchise. However if Mark Millar has his way, the Superman franchise may very well have nothing to fear, not even Kryptonite.

Mark Millar, the award-winning Scottish graphic novelist most famous for The Ultimates, Wanted, and the current arc of Wolverine, was interviewed by G4 recently, and revealed the possibility that he could be involved with a reboot of the Superman franchise.

In addition to revealing that the movie adaptation of his comic Kick-Ass is going to be done with $70 million, rather than the measly $30 million previously reported, Millar referred to a close and very famous director that has asked him, if WB agrees, to join him on a Superman project.

Millar is definitely not new to the Superman world, being completely obsessed (apparently he owns the stuffed white cat that Superman saved in one of the movies”¦ ?) with the DC powerhouse. Not surprisingly then, Millar revealed that he has a Lord of the Rings-style epic in mind.

“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years of a big three-picture Superman thing, like a big Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. And hopefully release them one year after another. So there is absolutely nothing firm yet, but hopefully over the next couple of weeks, we’ll get something to work,” said Millar. “If it works out, we’ll have to start shooting next summer.”

Check out the video here below from G4 for the full interview, including an interview with artist Tony Harris. But as for a Superman trilogy, given the franchise that Christopher Nolan has created, and WB’s desire to make Superman a tent-pole again, this definitely sounds possible.

  2. Hopefully we will see some decent villans this time. Not lex luthor + kryptonite over and over and over and over and *snore*

Death and treturn done in its fullness would make a great movie (the cartoon one was ok but it was only half a story)

THen perhaps a superman batman movie!

  3. Despite it flaws, I’d very much like to see WB give Singer and Routh a chance at a sequel. Overall, I found Superman Returns to be a rich, exciting, and utterly magnificent telling of heroism and love, and I believe it brought a profound and inspiring depth to The Man of Steel. As for Routh’s performance as Superman, I thought it was just breathtaking – one of the most powerful and deeply moving male characterizations I’ve ever seen on film.

Singer has expressed a desire to take the sequel in an action-packed, “Wrath of Khan” direction. Now THAT sounds like an excellent alternative to a reboot, and I believe Bryan Singer has has the talent and passion to maintain a compelling storyline while bringing eye-popping, heart-stopping excitement to the Man of Steel.

  4. Superman Returns was a beautifully made film, but needed a touch more action. Add that and there is no point to doing a reboot. But even if they do reboot the franchise, I sincerely hope they keep Routh, if no one else. He did a solid job with an unsolid script.

  5. The only thing worse than Returns would be an Incredible Hulk style reboot, all style and no substance. Personally I’d rather have a sequel to Returns and see what Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh had in mind when they took on this responsibility.

And I am not alone when I say BRING ROUTH BACK!

  6. If DC won’t allow Millar his Superman trilogy, then I don’t see why we should see it on the silver screen either.

    If Warner’s is smart they’ll

    BRING SINGER BACK!!!

    AND

    BRING ROUTH BACK!!!
