The Movie God   |  @   |

Halloween ManGeeks of Doom had the chance to ask Drew Edwards, creator and writer of the indie comic Halloween Man, some questions about his work, how he got there, and where things may be going!

For those unfamiliar with the title, Halloween Man began as a webcomic about a regular dude named Solomon who becomes a V8 for a hungry vampire. Instead of death, a wizard named Morlack decides to channel the monster movies on TV into him, making him completely immortal, but very zombie-like, needing too feed on some flesh as often as he can. Thankfully his girlfriend is into the wild and crazy, so being undead, having half a deformed face and a purely skeletal arm happens to be alright with her. He also has an enchanted shovel to do battle with and his buddies Nickodemis and Man-Goat to keep him company!

And now, the universe of Halloween Man will crossover into the world of Devil’s Due’s Hack/Slash with Hack/Slash vs Halloween Man, Part 1 of which available now in jpg or pdf formats, and eventually as part of a printed trade paperback collection. If you’re into comics, be sure to check it out, and for all your artists out there, there’s still time to enter the Halloween Man contest (details below).

Geeks of Doom: What originally got you into comics and when did you decide this what you wanted to do in life?

Drew Edwards: I grew up in a small town in Texas. So what comics represented was this…I don’t want to say escape…but fantasy world. The big cities that most comics took place in seemed very romantic to me. Most of my earliest experiences reading comics were reprints of old Marvel & DC stuff at our public library.

I don’t know that there ever was a lightning rod moment where I said “hey, I want to write comics.” I just sort of grew into it. My friends and I would make up our own superheroes as kids. All this grew out of wanting to keeping doing that but in the adult world.

Halloween Man 01GoD: Halloween Man has a uniquely odd mixture of traits. What inspired the creation of this character?

DE:Mostly it was watching old monster movies like Creature from the Black Lagoon, relating to the monster, and wanting him to get the girl for a change. But also thrown into the blender is my love of old Fantastic Four comics, rock music, cult cinema, and pin-up girls.

People always ask me why I don’t get sick of writing it. But the answer is simple, it touches on every thing I love. It would be my favorite comic even if I didn’t write it.

GoD: A few of us here at Geeks of Doom had the pleasure of reading the first Halloween Man story “Superdeformed” last year, which was to be a collection of your webcomic. Are there any plans to release this in graphic novel form through your new publisher, Devil’s Due? Will a new release include the origin story “Zombie In A Black Leather Jacket”?

DE: Well, more on that when the time is right. But things look good for all of that. There’s an interest in getting all of Nicola Scott’s Halloween Man stuff into print of course. David Baldeon is also a rising star in the industry, so there’s that too. More than that, I cannot say at the moment. I’m such a massive tease.

GoD: What brought about the crossover between the world of Halloween Man world and the Hack/Slash universe?

DE: A very fine gentlemen named Brian Crowley is a mutual friend of both myself and Mr. Tim Seeley. He got us talking over email and the whole thing grew out of that. Tim and I have a lot in common. The crossover seems like a really natural thing for both characters. It was actually probably the easiest deal I’ve ever laid out, because everyone involved thought it sounded like fun.

GoD: Any chance for a Halloween Man cameo in the Hack/Slash movie that’s being talked about, or will that movie’s story be far and away from when the two of you joined up?

DE: I don’t know any more about the movie than you do. Which is good, because I want to enjoy it on it’s own term.

GoD: Speaking of movies, would you ever want to see Halloween Man on the big screen or would you prefer he only ever lived in print?

DE: I want a Halloween Man cartoon on Adult Swim. I think it would be a great book end show with Venture Bros. I want toys, t-shirts, stickers, the whole damn deal. Not because of the money I might make on it. But because I just think they’d be cool looking.

Halloween Man 02GoD: As a comic writer/creator, what’s your number one, absolute favorite comic series of all time?

DE: Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four. Hands down, no contest. The sheer level of coolness in those old comics blow my mind every time I read them. It’s raw, primal, and just plain weird.

GoD: Are there any other projects you’re working on or looking at doing, or are you solely focusing on Halloween Man at the moment?

DE: There’s always stuff I’m cooking up. But right now the focus is having Halloween Man leap from web comics to print comics. I want him to exist in both forms from now on. There’s a lot I have planned for the characters and I need to move them a long to a better future.
