In these selfish times it’s rare for a community to help an individual. But when comic artist Josh Medors was diagnosed with cancer the geek community did just that. An artist for numerous works, Josh Medors has worked on 30 Days of Night Annual, Dial M for Monster: a Cal Macdonald Mystery, and Horrorcide. Medors was recently diagnosed with cancer, and this benefit comic is a response to that news. Many in the comic book community have donated their time, skills, and work, including an appearance as a zombie in The Walking Dead.

Pulp Tales, a collection of five stories begins with “Bluejacket” written by B. Clay Moore and Seth Peck and art by Chris Samnee. The story begins with the Bluejackets in the middle of apprehending a Werejaguar. Once they succeed and return to their headquarters you see the heads of previous conquests, including humans.

In the second story, “Newt Lawman and the Secrets of the Valley-Chapter XV Apache Rising,” written by Josh Fialkov and art by Andy B, we jump into the middle of a fight between cowboys and Indians all while the main character Newt Lawman and his sidekick, Running Bear, are on the search for the Golden Ox.

In story number three, “The Crescent Flame!”, story and art by Kody Chamberlain, we find a photographer who discovers something strange in one of his photos. Quickly he is joined by the Crescent Flame, and the mission to figure out the location of the mystery person begins.

“Crash Winters: Palooka P.I.-Chapter 8: Fallen Angels,” story and art by Tony Fleecs, follows the private detective who is on a mission to protect a woman who is quickly found dead. He decides that, instead of earning cash for rent, he should search for who killed her and, in the process, discovers the dead woman’s deep dark secret.

The final story is just that, a story. No drawings except for a couple of brilliant illustrations by Sarah Wilkinson. Written by Steve Niles, this tale follows Carl Henderson, the bodyguard/protector/enforcer for the Gianni family. Carl has a great love for his job but a woman shows up from his past and that’s when the fun begins. This story, even without the visual help, has a lot of brutality. While reading it you can visualize how the comic would look. Think the big fight scenes from Kill Bill or Goodfellas.

This comic has a little something for everyone, with cowboys and indians, private detectives, and creepy Werejaguars (who knew, right?). An enjoyable and riveting read, Pulp Tales is easy to follow, even if you haven’t been keeping up on the stories, each keeps you interested and wishing for one more page. Go get this comic. If not for the read, then do it to help out a fellow geek in need.
