Eli Roth’s Blockbuster/Indie Gameplan Involving ‘Grindhouse’ Spinoff!

The Movie God   |  @   |

Thanksgiving

It’s been a fair amount of time since gore-master Eli Roth‘s Hostel 2. He last did an acting gig in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, but Roth looks to be preparing to get back into the fold with a pair of movies in-hand that he’s hoping to complete together.

Eli’s master plan is to finish up the script for his big science fiction blockbuster, which will look to be the biggest budget movie he’s done so far. Once that script is finished, he’ll shop it around along with Thanksgiving — the movie based on the trailer that he made specifically for Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse — for around $85 Million. His hope is to use about $80 Million for the big movie, and then add three weeks to the end of filming and do Thanksgiving for around $5 Million. Pretty ingenious little plan if it all works out, if I do say.

The blockbuster (which has a title, but can’t be shared yet) will apparently have to do with some kind of monster of sorts. Here’s what Roth has to say about his big project:

I don’t want to give away the title yet, because I have to make sure I own it 100%, but it’s going to be something that is really fun with lots of mass destruction. I wanted to do something along the lines of “˜Transformers’ or “˜Cloverfield’ that was a little more science fiction-based, and with lots of chaos and mass destruction.

I don’t want to say what [the monster is] yet. Once it gets set up, I will let everyone know. It is not aliens or robots or a virus – it’s a little more grounded. But when people hear it they are going to be like “˜That is going to be insane!’.

When that bad boy is all said and done, he’ll move on to Thanksgiving. This is where it may get pretty interesting as the plan seems to be for Roth to get back to his roots. Here’s what he plans to do with this not-so-family-friendly fare:

…the sickest, bloodiest, most violent slasher movie. I want to make the highest body count slasher film I can.

Everyone is familiar with Grindhouse and the insanely over-the-top trailers that it presented, including Thanksgiving, so we know what to expect with that. On the other hand, it should be really interesting to get some more information on this big blockbuster sci-fi flick and what it might bring on.

  1. This absolutely makes my day. Of all those fake trailers, this one I wanted to see a follow-through more than any.
