Steve Rogers To Be ‘Reborn’ As Captain America Before Independence Day

The original Sentinel of Liberty Steve Rogers will resume his role as Captain America when he returns to the Marvel Universe just in time for Independence day, according to Marvel Comics veteran Senior Editor Tom Brevoort in a recent interview with UGO.

Rogers will make his debut in Reborn #1, the first issue of a new series written by ongoing Cap scribe Ed Brubaker with art from Bryan Hitch and a cover by Alex Ross. The series is reported to hit comic shops on July 1, Brevoort said, and it will reveal all of the ground work that was laid out years before.

It made headlines two years ago when Steve Rogers met his untimely death in Captain America #25 at the hands of former lover Sharon Carter during the Marvel Universe Civil War, preceding a massive Skrull invasion.

Brevoort said:

Honestly, it just feels like the right time. There’s a sense of change in the air, and it seems like people are ready to want to believe in heroes again. And it’s been long enough since we planted the seeds in all of those CAP issues prior to #25 that if we strung things out much longer, we’d run the risk of having the story come apart on us.

In an interview with Marvel, Brevoort said that from the moment of Cap’s death, they’ve been planning the story of his return.

“[As] the story developed and we embraced the concept of Bucky as the new Cap, events elongated naturally, [but] you’ll be able to look back into [CAPTAIN AMERICA #25] and the issues that followed and see the assorted seeds we planted once we reveal what’s been going on in REBORN.”

  3. @mo
I assume that what happens next for Bucky will be part of the new Captain America storyline. Brevoort made it seem like Steve Rogers might not be ready to just jump back into the Cap role.

  4. Ugh. I was hoping Steve Rogers would be dead for good. Love Ed Brubaker’s storytelling so I might stick around.
