I knew I was headed for trouble when I saw Nick Cannon on the cover of the DVD for the movie Weapons. But I am forever an optimist, so I decided to give it a shot. Just because Mr. Cannon’s claim to fame is being on basic cable and marrying Mariah Carey doesn’t mean he can’t act or pick good movies to star in, right? So after watching this movie, was I proven wrong? Sadly, no.

Weapons is just about near every idealistic student film you have ever seen. Right off the bat, a murder occurs at a fast food restaurant and Reggie (Cannon) is killed. For the rest of the film, the movie follows Reggie as well as other youths in a series of disjointed flashback vignettes that explains how Reggie ended up dead and why the murder occurred in the first place. The whole point of the film is to explain that even the smallest event can have devastating results but after watching 30 minutes of the film, does it really matter?

Now, the premise is not original by any means but it did have potential. Too bad the idea is squandered by the lack of interesting characters and character development. I couldn’t care less about any of these characters, mainly because they are all just so unlikable and stereotypical. The white guys in the film wear their pants all the way down to their butts and talk in ebonics and the black kids are gun-totting bullies that respond to violence with violence. None of the characters has any redeeming qualities, let alone anything interesting to say. The movie is almost an hour and a half yet I am pretty sure a third of the movie has no dialogue. There’s just a lot of scenes of wannabe thugs, both white and black, riding in a car, listening to rap music. Is it to show how bored the kids are? Is it to show that even though they are different, they are the same? Is it because the director/writer Adam Bhala Lough just needed to fill up the film with filler? I just don’t see the point.

I could be disappointed with the actors but with nothing to work with, it is hard to put the blame on them. I could only blame them for choosing bad movies to star in. It is a shame too because the film does have Paul Dano (of Little Miss Sunshine) on the roster but even he is squandered due to lack of screen time. I hate to pick on Cannon because he is the easiest target but he is terrible in this movie. Just nothing charismatic about him whatsoever, a trait that was evident in his other film Drumline.

Lough’s dialogue, what little there is in the film, is authentic enough but his direction lacks creativity. Any up and coming filmmaker can do a single take of a scene using a hand held camera but a good director adds something different to the mix, whether it be interesting shot angles or visually stimulating location. This film brings nothing to the table but a terrible special effect of someone’s head being blown off his shoulders, a rape scene, and a pair of girls making out.

I wish there was something I could say that is good about the film but there really isn’t. There is a distinct reason why this movie was put on the shelf for two years before being released on DVD. There are plenty of movies out there much more interesting out there. Avoid this one.
