The Flickchart Obsession: Presenting Your Next Addiction
  |  @   |

A brand new website has been making waves as of late, and the time has come to spread the word of its existence. The website is called Flickchart and was created by Nathan Chase and Jeremy Thompson. In just its early stages, it has quickly abducted the hands of some of the ‘nets biggest movie geeks with the subtle begging for just one more click of your mouse; followed by another…and then just one more. Before you know it, you’ve chosen thousands of movies over thousands of others, and your mouse is a melted, warped plastic blob.

Basically, Flickchart is a new kind of social networking for movie fanatics. The site presents you with two movies and you simply choose one. However, as you do this more and more times, you repeatedly discover yourself in a vicious stalemate with your own personal preferences. While many of these selections can be incredibly painful to break through, there is also another catch: every single time that you click, your stats are calculated, and eventually, you will build your very own ultimate top 20 movies list.

For someone like myself, it has always been unbelievably challenging to choose even a top 10 favorite films. There are plenty that I know are up there, but there is also many that are interchangeable and just depend upon the day that you ask me. With Flickchart, you’re forced to choose between these tough calls, and thus, you will eventually discover your ultimate favorite films list whether you know it already or not. Yes, nothing is really final, and down the road you may choose another to take a spot in your list; but a lot of time may pass and it is not always so easy as just changing your mind.

Click on over to see a great trailer for the site created by Flickchart co-creator Nathan Chase; as well as get information on how you can get in on this tortuous bliss, and see where my own personal top 20 stands.

While the best way to form your list is to choose among all movies, in cases where your favorites maybe are not coming up, or you want to do a little refining, there are options. For one, you can choose a genre or any decade and just choose between movies in those categories. Not only will this get movies into the mix for your chart, it will also build your top 20 favorite films of each decade or genre as well. Keep in mind: when you choose a movie over another that’s in your top 20 — even if it’s a movie that wouldn’t be in yours — it will jump up and in. This is just how it works; do not NOT choose a movie just because you don’t want it in your tops. Eventually your favorite flicks will come up and they will find their way into your list! If you are too impatient to wait for movies to come up, you also have the option of searching — type it in, click it, and choose between your movie and three others. Once a movie has been initially ranked, you can also go back to it again and re-rank it. The higher a movie is, the higher the three movies you rank it against; so if you do it enough, that method will get a movie into your top 20!

Just to give you an example of how your lists may look, here is my own personal top 20. For me personally, I’ve done 1525 rankings and most of these would be on my favorites list with just a few that have found their way into the club…for now.

At the moment, Flickchart is in its beta stages and is still working on adding new features, fixing glitches, and adding new movies every single day. Right now, they’re concentrating on all of the U.S. movies, and then they will be adding a lot more indie and foreign films, so do not fret, eventually it will all be on there! Eventually, they plan to integrate a lot more features, including different methods for looking at and developing your lists and tie-ins to hugely-popular other sites like Twitter, Facebook, and even Netflix. The site creators also have plans to go top of the world at some point down the line with new versions that will allow you to choose your favorite video games, music, TV shows, and books. For now, though, they’re all about the movies.

Flickchart will be officially launched on September 9, 2009, but if you’re interested in embracing this addiction: go to the website now, check it out, and sign up immediately! The longer you wait to sign up, the longer you will be waiting to become an approved member.

A big thank you to Katie Doyle for making me aware of this phenomenon, and Scott Weinberg for making sure I and many others became infatuated with it!
