‘Pirates Of the Caribbean 4’ Aims For A Spring Start Date
  |  @   |

Coming Soon was able to grab Disney’s Head of Production Oren Aviv at San Diego Comic Con 2009 and ask him a few questions. One of the juicy bits that they were able to abstract from the Disney head had to do with the next chapter in one of the biggest franchises ever: Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

Aviv confirmed that they were indeed still all about making another Pirates movie, and that they actually wanted to start shooting it next Spring for a 2011 release. Since the final movie of the trilogy, At World’s End, had come and gone, we all knew another flick would be coming. Judging by the last images we saw, it was expected to focus of course on Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) going after the legendary Fountain of Youth. It was also expected that stars like Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom would be left out of the project to save money — a move that would probably help the franchise overall.

While none of these details are confirmed yet, sadly, it is a good sign to know that Depp and Disney are on board, and that this Spring start date is now planned. It was also confirmed that this will be done as one movie (as opposed to filming two simultaneously as they did with Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End) with the hopes of it doing well enough to constitute a new trilogy down the road.

Here’s what Aviv told Coming Soon about their hopes:

We’re going to shoot ‘Pirates 4’ in April or May of next year,” Aviv told us during our interview. “We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan.

It’s important to get the story right and it’s important to me to scale it down, because we can’t get bigger. The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.

Another large issue is who they can get to direct Pirates 4. Gore Verbinski left the franchise to go and do the BioShock movie, which has since been put on the infamous back burner. So can they tempt Verbinski back into doing it, or do they go and get someone else; and if so, who?

  1. This movie is going to be better then the dark knight!, i just know it!. And i meant that is a good thing too, vecause i myself am also tired of the dumb hype made by the dark knight for that movie, which was not far fetched enough for me as the other ones where!. I predict that pirates of the caribbean 4 will be the best movie in 2011, will kill the dark knights box office records and even titanics box office records as well!.

  2. If they start filming the Bioshock movie NOW and sort out their budgeting issues by perhaps filming in a place like Australia, then maybe Gore Verbinski will be finished in time to also direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4, if it starts filming no earlier than spring 2010. I would like to see Gore direct both movies, however I know this is wishful thinking and most likely impossible. I would definitely like Gore to direct Bioshock, as I’ve done a bit of research and believe that this movie adaptation could be something quite different to what audiences have seen with such an intriguing plot and storyline. Gore is one of few directors talented enough to endeavor with such an artistically challenging piece of work that could turn out to be very great.

  3. Well, I guess if they don’t use Keira and Orlando, they better bring in another lead chick to balance out the testosterone. It won’t be the same without Keira and Orlando though…

  4. I’m not shocked that pirates of the caribbean 4 is coming out in 2011 afterall!. I knew all along that pirates of the caribbean 4 would be coming out in 2011 instead of 2012, because i knew that walt disney pictures was not going to let or allow jerry bruckheimer make pirates of the caribbean 4 come out in 2012 !. Walt disney pictures, the only thing have to say to you is “WAY TO GO!”, you won the “I WANT PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 RELEASED IN 2011 WAR/ARGUMENT!”.

  5. Since Pirates of the Caribbean 4 finally does start filming in april 2010, that means that it starts filming in 8 months from now!.
