Is The ‘Fraggle Rock’ Movie & ‘Dark Crystal’ Sequel Closer Than We Think?

The Movie God   |  @   |

MTV Movies Blog recently chatted with Brian Henson — son of the late, great master of puppets, Jim Henson — who currently runs the Jim Henson Company with his sister Lisa. Among the topics discussed, Henson was asked about the reported Fraggle Rock movie that was in the works. And unlike most, he was happy to fill us in on not only where the Fraggle project stood, but also the sequel to The Dark Crystal that has been talked about in the past.

What we know about Fraggle Rock is not much, but it is known that it will involve a little adventure to what they called “outer space,” which was just out of their little cave in the real world where humans live. Henson added to that as well, saying music will be involved and that it will be developed for all audiences (considering most fans are now in their 20s and 30s) and not just children.

Click on over to see what Henson had to say about the two exciting projects.

The Dark Crystal sequel has a little more information going on for it thus far. The title of the movie will be The Power of the Dark Crystal, and it will take place centuries after the first film. It will tell the story of a girl named Thurma, who is made of fire and lives at the center of the planet. The girl of fire needs to obtain a shard of the crystal in hopes of re-igniting the dying sun. You can click the image above for a description of the sequel from back when it was aiming for a 2008 release date.

Here’s what Brian Henson had to say about the Fraggle Rock movie, as well as where the two stand:

[It’s] still in very active development. VERY active development. That has a very strong script.

It’ll have a strong musical component. It’ll be expanded to an older audience. ‘Fraggle Rock’ was presented… for a pretty exclusively children’s audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience.

Both of those projects… are very close to going into pre-production. They’re both really ready to go. [The studio is] just putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces.

The best part of all of this: these movies will be done with the fullest amount of faithfulness to their predecessors, meaning they will still be puppets, and not computer animated.
