Nightmare Poster

The Michael Bay produced Platinum Dunes horror re-imagining of A Nightmare on Elm Street now has its very own teaser trailer courtesy of MySpace, and it’s something to see for fans of the series!

This new Nightmare on Elm Street is going in what sounds like the best possible direction: it uses the Freddy Krueger who slaughters you in your dreams that we all know and love, but it gives his character more of a story. As you’ll see in the trailer, they’re aiming to portray him as a regular and innocent dude who’s small and fairly insignificant looking and is wrongly murdered by a mob of disgruntled parents. You all know the rest.

The trailer has a lot of good stuff and it looks like it could be a lot of fun. There are some questionable additions that makes it look like it was cut using footage from previous movies including Freddy vs. Jason (creepy-ass children singing; claw scraping on wall), but it all still looks decent. The only real cause for concern is if it will really be unique; or if like Friday the 13th, will it be just like the other movies. When they went and got Oscar-nominated Jackie Earle Haley to play Krueger and shared details, it sounded like a whole new world they were creating. In the trailer, after the cool beginning, you will see many things that would lead one to believe it’s your average slasher movie, so we have ourselves a wait and see situation. One thing we do know is: Freddy will not look exactly the same, and that sick and goofy sense of humor appears to be gone completely.

Platinum Dunes most recently did a remake of Friday the 13th which wasn’t loved quite as much as hoped by people who weren’t already dedicated followers of the killer icon. Before that, they also released new takes on Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, and The Hitcher. They’re style is to take the concept and characters of classic horror, but give them the shots and visuals that today’s film making technology offers. This doesn’t always translate to a great movie, but they always seem to look really damn good, that’s for true.

A Nightmare on Elm Street will be released in theaters on April 30, 2010.

  1. Jackie Earle Haley was the best option IMO. His face there at the end though…. Hopefully that will be changed, looked worse then one of those cheap rubber freddy masks from a joke shop.

  2. Still has the sicko humor, but from what I saw they just rehased all the great scenes from Nightmare 1-5(any fan of the originals will think same and recognize everything in the teaser.), nothing really original other than slight tweaking of the back story on Freddy. The voice is all wrong aswell and they need the Freddy laugh too. The new Friday sucked ass so I really don’t have faith in this either.

  3. Started off great, lost a little edge by the end of it. I don’t want to see teens getting murdered every ten minutes. BORING! Jackie Earle Haley will be amazing.

  4. I don’t want a Nightmare on Elm street remake… I’ll just keep my Johnny Depp and Robert Englund, thank you.

  5. No denying the film’s got a glossy look, but I rather expect it to be sucktacular. The voice and face are both all wrong. As a remake, “Friday the 13th” didn’t work, but since there was only minimal rehashing, it DID work as an above average sequel. There’s obviously too much rehashing going on for “Nightmare” to stand a chance of working on that secondary level. My guess is it’ll get minimal business and royally piss off longtime fans of the franchise.

  6. I was all for it until after the jump and he talked and you saw his face…man it did look worse than a rubber mask! Anyone else think of Sling Blade when you heard him talk?!

  7. You are all making a HUGE mistake on judging the look and voice by this trailer alone. That is way too presumptuous. The series has so much potential and has never seen that potential realized. God, I just wish I could make it. Same with Friday the 13th. It’s like they have no faith in the material. Such a mistake. I really hope the rules balls.

  8. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the look they are going for is that of an actual burn victim, not for the scariest face they can create.

Upon further viewings, you can see that he does have that terrible burn victim look to him.

  10. Watched it a couple more times, and have felt better about it each time. The IGN commentary of it really speaks to how I feel about it. The voice is great and the look isn’t corny. Done right, I sincerely believe the remake could make better of the original.

  11. Please. This movie is going to suck. Just like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Black Xmas and every other POS remake did.

“Jackie Earle Haley was the best option”

The 2 reasons this scrub was chosen is because
    1. He played a pedo in Little Children so of course he should be in this movie.
    2. All of those wannabe imdb casting directors/message board losers seen that movie and started lobbying for him to play Freddy.

I guess Alex Ovechkin should play Jason in the FT13th sequel? You know because he plays hockey. Man I should be an imdb casting director too!

And that stupid fuckin’ face. He looks like Mason Verger from Hannibal.
