Geek Costumes

We at Geeks of Doom love Halloween. The smell in the air, the leaves changing color to mark the occasion, and all of the old edited horror movies playing over and over on your TV make it one of the most entertaining and exciting times of year.

Back in 2006, we compiled a list of some of the best geek costumes on the market for those of you who do not yet have an idea as to what you want to be. It’s already been three years now, so we thought it was about time to compile another epic list of costume options for the undecided (which includes myself).

While checking these costumes out, keep some things in mind — most importantly: pretty much every costume that you see will have multiple styles of varying price and quality. The majority of the ones we have here are in the $30-$50 range, but you can find really high-quality “Deluxe” versions of the costume that will run you in the $100-$200 dollar range. These are for the folks who have money to spare and love authenticity. If you’re out of your freakin’ mind, there’s even Batman and Darth Vader costumes that will run you $700+ dollars. If you don’t like the one we’ve linked to, just search the character and check out all of the others that exist. Most costumes have children’s versions available, too. We’ve included some great kids’ costumes, but if you find an adult one you’d like for the little ones, just search it out!

Also worth keeping in mind: a lot of these costumes have female counter-costumes that would be perfect for couples looking to match up. Oh, and it won’t be stupid like going as a plug and an electrical socket. Tee-hee.

Many, many costume options were found for men, women, children, and pets, so please continue on and check some of them out!

Men

Nero — Star Trek

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek was one of the biggest movies of this past Summer movie season, so it should be pretty popular to go as some of the characters. There’s plenty of Trek shirts available in different colors if you want to be Kirk, but that’s just a shirt and kind of boring, so why not go as someone a little more exciting like the villain played by Eric Bana, Nero.

Snake Eyes — G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Another surprise hit of the Summer was G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which looked like it was going to pretty god-awful, but ended up winning many fans over with its campy good time. You can buy multiple costumes from this movie, but it’s obvious that the only one worth going as is Snake Eyes. Maybe Cobra Commander would be acceptable, but you can’t be a drunk ninja as him.

Dumb and Dumber Tuxedos

These have probably been around for a long time now, but I’ve never seen them and that makes them brand new and awesome. The costume is the wild and wacky tuxedos of Loyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) from Dumb and Dumber, in all of their blinding orange and unsettling light blue glory. Even you can now be the life (or embarrassment) of the party.

Mario & Luigi — Super Mario Brothers

If you’re heading to a Halloween bash solo, or if you’re going with a buddy, going as the Super Mario Brothers is never a bad decision. I’m definitely considering morphing myself into Mario, but the competition is stiff.

Wolf Man — Monster Squad

OK, so this is not an official costume from the fantastic nostalgia flick The Monster Squad, but c’mon, it looks JUST like it, so why not pretend. This is the time of year where all pretending is acceptable, and this one is well worth doing. Nards definitely not included.

Dexter — Dexter

Dexter is one of the more popular shows on TV right now, so going as Michael C. Hall’s Dexter character may be pretty appealing to some. It’s not exactly the best costume in the world…unless of course you LOOK like Michael C. Hall, but again, pretend, pretend. If you want to be everyone’s friendly neighborhood serial killer, grab a girl and her kids and a few garbage bags and have at it!

Iron Man — Iron Man

With Iron Man becoming a universally loved comic book superhero movie and Iron Man 2 about to attempt to build on that love, Iron Man will be a pretty popular costume for a few years. This may be a reason not to go as him, but this is a pretty sweet little costume. If you’re an Iron Man fanatic, it’s well-worth a little peek.

Welshy — Futurama

Just like the Monster Squad, no, this costume is not from Futurama. And even worse, the costume is nothing by itself. But if you’re a super-fan of the soon-to-return Futurama and you have the physical build that the man modeling this costume does, then you — yes, YOU can be Welshy from the Star Trek episode of the show. WELSHY!!!!

Jack Skellington — The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington is the lovable skeletal gentleman from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and has to be one of the better costumes that you can be if you have the proper build. The character is built for the word of Halloween and shall strive in that same world.

This is a costume that can be turned into a couples costume when paired with the other woman’s Nightmare costume below!

Hellboy — Hellboy

There’s a handful of Hellboy costumes available and they’re all pretty bad-ass. The best ones include the hand and so long as you’re able to rock the red makeup, you can pass off as a decent Ron Perlman replication and punch people in the head with your foam hand all night. (Note: Don’t punch people in the head, or I’ll have to put you in time out)

Thor

Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is not out yet, so we’re not too sure how he’s going to look in the movie, but we DO know what Vincent D’Onofrio looked like in Adventures in Babysitting, and this is a little closer to that. Either way, if you want to jump the gun a little and beat everyone to the punch, this is your Thor costume.

Burger King Guy

This really isn’t the geekiest of costumes you can get, to be honest. But let us be fair, if you want to be the scariest, more horribly unbearable figures in the history of the world, then there’s not much better that you can do than the Burger King guy. You will bring all who you encounter to twitching, inconsolable tears.

Women

DC Comics Deluxe Wonder Woman

No one knows whether a movie version of Wonder Woman will ever actually make it to the big screen. Many years have passed with no luck at all, so holding your breath could result in death. Even so, you’re guaranteed to acquire the majority of male eyes if you walk in wearing this costumes. And if you don’t like it, you can lasso their ass.

Queen of Hearts

This is another “jump the gun” costume where you can help bring back the wonderful world of Alice in Wonderland before Tim Burton’s new movie comes out. No one really likes the Queen because she’s a big bully, but the costume is quite lovely.

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn was shown the love in the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game that was released recently, but is one of the more popular characters to not have been featured in one of the many films yet. Sure, she didn’t first show up until after a couple of the movies, but still, let’s go Christopher Nolan!

Snow White — Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

A costume that the Disney fans to go old school. No, it’s not the most geeky of costumes that you will find available, but it is a great replication that aspiring queens will gladly slip on and dance around the room in.

Uhura — Star Trek

As mentioned, Star Trek was a huge movie this past Summer. And though, just like the men, this costume isn’t the most exciting, it’s one of the few options for the lady Trekkies out there who don’t want to go as Spock.

Maleficent — Sleeping Beauty

We’re pushing the classic Disney characters this year because the costumes are pretty awesome. If you’re not the chipper type, why not go as the purest form of Disney evil from Sleeping Beauty: Maleficent.

Jane Jetson — The Jetsons

The Jetson‘s is obviously another old school show that has had many rumors of being turned into a movie by Robert Rodriguez. While that may never happen, that’s no need to stop you from hitting the party as Jane Jetson. This is one that may not make most geek lists, but come on now, that’s a damn snazzy little Jetson‘s get-up!

Sally — The Nightmare Before Christmas

As promised, the perfect geek couples’ accompaniment to the men’s Jack Skellington costume listed above. You alone or along with your significant other would easily be the life (or death) of the party with these Nightmare Before Christmas costumes.

Maid Marion

This one is definitely not “geek,” as you can plainly see, but with Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood well on the way, this is another chance to beat others to the punch and bring back the elegance of the lovely Lady Marion. This is one that has a much pricier version for those who desire the true elegance and you’re sure to find a decent Robin Hood costume to match it.

Evil Queen — Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Another buddy costume possibility, this time from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs — if you or your friend is going as Snow White, pick up the slack, grab an apple, a rock the dark and deceptive side of things by becoming the Evil Queen.

Kids

Flash

A perfect costume for your little ones who run around the house at blazing speed leaving you wondering where the energy could possibly be coming from. It’s looking more and more like a new movie based on Flash isn’t going to happen, so why not make your child the superhero in the spotlight, complete with some insane abs.

Optimus Prime & Bumblebee — Transformers

Bumblebee

Two of the more popular costumes out there for the kids will be these two stars of Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. The latter costume seems to be the better looking of the duo, but try telling that to your little Optimus fanatic.

Wonder Woman Child’s Costume

The geeky costumes for the little ladies were fairly scarce, so you have to take what you can get out there, which makes Wonder Woman a valid choice. This is one of a few that would match well with Mommy dressing up as the same thing.

Adorable Darth Vader

Perfect for your up and coming future dark lord ruler of the world. This may be the cutest little Vader costume since Rick Moranis as Darth Helmet in Spaceballs.

Mini Uhura

Can’t say many kids will likely be big time Trek fans, but for those who are, here’s uniform that can be used to “pretend” you’re Uhura on the deck of the Enterprise.

R2-D2

One of my favorite costumes for the kiddies, who are the perfect size to turn into the small, domed robot from the Star Wars universe. It is worth note that this is a costume to be careful with; it looks like it may come with a lot of tripping and falling possibilities.

Frodo Baggins — Lord of the Rings

Us adults just don’t work well as Hobbits, but we can certainly go as Aragorn, Gandalf, or Legolas and turn the kids into all the little Hobbits. This could allow the whole family to become the perfect scale-sized cast of Lord of the Rings, and that would be awesome.

Ahsoka — Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Many adults have trouble warming up to the cartoony animated Star Wars series, The Clone Wars. But children may be more in-tune to it, and this costume for the young Padawan Ahsoka may be perfect for them.

Red & Black Reversible Spider-Man

Spider-Man 3 wasn’t a very accepted movie, and the characters were mishandled at times, but you have to admit: Spidey did look pretty sweet in all black. This Spider-Man costume is reversible and allows your child to be either red Spider-Man, or the black one. There is also an adult costume for this one, but it’s probably better fitting for a kid to be wearing.

Mini Amidala — Star Wars

Yet another Star Wars costume and one of the few that works for the girls. Another where Mom and daughter can dress alike and go out as a pair of geek-worthy queens.

Pets

Here are a few costumes for the pets. All of them are pretty self-explanatory, so instead of adding a description to each and every one, you can just click the links to check them out. My personal favorite is easily the Yoda and the Woody costumes — they’re perfect for a small-medium dog.

The Dark Knight

Darth Vader

Yoda

Princess Leia

Buzz & Woody — Toy Story

STAR WARS

A bunch of Star Wars costumes that weren’t mentioned above.

Plo-Koon

I have NO idea who Plo-Koon is, but he looks pretty awesome, so Star Wars purists who recognize him should be excited to be him. You can go and find your Jedi robes and Luke Skywalker, Hans, or Vader costumes, but those are overdone to the max and a change of geek is useful.

The Emperor

We all know the Emperor of course, but I’ve yet to see a costume this decent-looking. If you have a knack for evil and don’t want to partake in the aforementioned over-doing, here’s a great alternative. Perfect for the grandparent geeks out there!

Asajj Ventress

I have no idea who this is, but it looks like a pretty cool costume for the female Star Wars fans out there. Unfortunately, it looks like you might have to buy some of your own lightsabers to complete it.

Queen Amidala

Princess Leia

WATCHMEN

As with the all of the Star Wars costumes, here’s the lineup of Watchmen character costumes. It doesn’t appear that there’s any full Dr. Manhattan costumes on their, but you can search for him to find the available accessories.

Rorshach

Nite Owl

Silk Spectre

The Comedian

Ozymandias

  2. These are great. I have already decided to go as Penny from Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. I like the Silk Spectre costume, but I personally would go as Sally Jupiter from this costume.

  3. I actually made my own Protoman costume. Not exactly like the game version, a little more militaristic, but my friends think it’s pretty epic.
Yellow scarf was hard to get, all pictures were taken before
But oh, the fun that shall be had
